Chapter Six

1692 Words
Mom and I sat together with our hands gripped to one another. This pack was more orderly then some of the others. They moved in military like precision. They were led by the largest wolf I had ever seen. His fur was a solid golden blond. It was almost like he was shining as he moved with precision. As he came closer, I gripped mom’s hand tighter. “Please pass by us, please pass by us.” I muttered under my breath. Time stopped when he stopped in front of our group of seats. I saw his paw lift and point in my direction. My breath caught in my throat. Surely, he’s pointing to the girl beside me. I knew I was wrong when I felt the guards gently grab my arms. “Mom!” I cried out as my hand was wretched from hers. She stood up, tears starting to fall from her face, and gave me a big hug. I tore my arms from the guards and returned it. “I love you little Katie bug, never forget that. Your dad loves you too.” I choked out a sob. “I love you both too. I won’t forget you.” The guards once again took my arms, a little harsher this time, and lead me out of the room. Tears were flowing freely from my eyes. My worst nightmare was happening. Maybe it was a mistake. I was gently shoved into a room. There was a chair in the center where I knew I was supposed to sit. The werewolves always shifted back to human form to look in the eyes of the person they thought was their mate to confirm it. The first year there were issues with wolves taking the wrong person home. It was a mess. I noticed the room was also filled with food and a tv. I took shaky steps to the chair and sank down in it. My head was in my hands, trying calm my tears, when I heard the door open. I knew what was expected of me. I didn’t want to die so I swallowed my pride and looked at the man who entered the room. He was tall, at least 6’5, with dirty blond hair that grazed his shoulders. He was absolutely gorgeous. He got closer to me and kneeled down, so we were eye to eye. I met his eyes and I saw a flash of recognition. I could tell he didn’t make a mistake. I couldn’t tear my eyes from his. They were a piercing green and I found that the rumors were true. I could see the outline of a wolf if I looked close enough. I felt his hand graze my jawline and my breath caught. I tore my eyes from his to study the rest of his face. His nose was crooked, like it had been broken and healed without being set. His mouth was turned up in a wide smile. The rest of his skin was flawless. His eyes darted to my lips and he leaned in as he stopped caressing my jaw. He was going to kiss me. I felt my breathing pick up. I didn’t want him to kiss me. He was a stranger. My eyes were darting, looking for a way out of this. I couldn’t find one, so I just closed my eyes, resigned to the fact that I didn’t run my life anymore. When nothing made contact with my skin, I opened them again to find that he had left. I let out a breath that I hadn’t realized I was holding. I started to shake, letting the fear overtake me. I talk a big game with the revolution and not being afraid to be found out but it’s just a front. I can’t let anyone know. I have to be the strength that brings people together. I sank from the chair as I realized that the revolution was never going to happen now unless Gary could take the lead. How was I going to be allowed to do anything? I imagine the rest of my life will consist of one room where I bear babies for my so-called mate. Tired of crying, I stood up and screamed in frustration. The d**k didn’t even introduce himself. As soon as he pointed me out, he was given a package of information about me and my life, but he never told me anything. I went to the door and tried to turn the knob. It was locked. I cursed and kicked it. Looking at the clock I realized it was past noon. How long had I been in here? I shrugged and did the only thing I could do, eat and watch tv.   I didn’t realize I had fallen asleep until I heard the door open. I jumped up and my empty plate fell on the floor. I looked to the door, expecting my ‘mate’ and found a guard instead. He motioned me to follow him. I followed him and was taken to a van. I was shoved in unceremoniously. I saw mostly women and a few men, with the same look on their faces. I didn’t see anyone I recognized. The van started to move as I buckled my seat. “Does anyone know what’s going on?” Most everyone shook their heads. One of the men spoke up. “I was told we were heading to the pack lands.” I swallowed, nervous. “Thanks. What’s your name?” People started to introduce themselves. We had only traveled for a few hours when the van stopped, and the door were opened. A women werewolf in what looked like nurses’ clothes entered the van. “Listen up. You are mates of the wolves in this pack. Before you are to be introduced to the pack you will be turned. Everyone single file into the hospital. It is a fairly painless process unless you make trouble.” A cloak of fear seemed to settle over the van. People started to file out of the van. When I got up to follow the nurse pushed me back in my seat. I wanted to ask her why, but I was afraid. Did my fear of the man mean I was going to go through the painful process? That was total bullshit. I wanted to open my mouth to say as much but the nurse beat me to it. “Katie. Your mate is going to change you personally. It will still be mostly painless, but you won’t have the werewolf venom pushed through your veins via IV like everyone else.” My courage building, I asked, “Why?” The nurse gave me a sweet smile. “You’ll find out soon enough.” She motioned me to follow her. I took a deep breath as I stepped out of the van. I saw the others filing into the hospital. There were 4 other vans beside this one that transported people to the pack lands. I followed the nurse into the hospital and into a large room. In the middle was a bed and a gown. “Get dressed in the gown. When you are done hop into bed and someone will be by to get your IV in for the medications”, I nodded my understanding and started to strip as she left. I didn’t want to be caught with my pants down, literally. After redressing in the thin gown, I laid in the bed and covered myself with the blanket. It was freezing in here, just like any other hospital. Soon a different nurse bustled in and got my IV placed. I couldn’t feel if the pain killer was working or not since I wasn’t in any pain. She left without a word, leaving me alone. There was no tv or anything to keep myself company, so I fished my phone out of the jumpsuit and played a game on it. I noticed there was no service so I couldn’t call or text anyone. Luckily, I had a few games that didn’t require internet or service to play. The door opened and the man from before came in. He saw the phone in my hand and frowned. “What are you doing?” His gruff voice came out. I gave him a hard look. “I was playing a game. There was nothing to do and no one to talk to.” His face relaxed and he nodded. I set my phone down as he approached. He looked nervous and stuck his hands in his pockets. “I’m going to change you.” His nervousness didn’t fit his towering physique. I lifted my eyebrows. “I know, the nurse told me. Can you walk me through the process?” My question seemed to surprise him. I liked to know what to expect though. He cleared his throat. “I will bite you deep enough for my venom to penetrate your blood stream. It will take about three days to change completely. Most of that time you will be passed out. The doctors and nurses will monitor your progress.” I nodded, a little afraid of the bite. “Why?” He narrowed his eyes in confusion but didn’t answer my question. I took a chance and spoke a little louder, pretending like I didn’t think he heard me. “Why are you changing me different than anyone else?” He shrugged. “Because I can.” I set my mouth in a hard line. He was going to be hard to get answers out of. I tried a different tactic. “So, what’s your name?” A knock on the door caused him to change his posture. His face became a hard, emotionless shell. It frightened me. He turned toward it and walked out. What was going on? He returned quickly, his face readable again. “I don’t have time to answer any questions right now. I have to change you.” I nodded, taking a shaky breath. He got closer to me. Without meaning to I said, “I’m scared.” In a small voice. I saw compassion in his face as he took my head in his hands. “I’m not going to hurt you little Kat.” I nodded and felt him expose my neck. The last thing I felt was his teeth sinking into my flesh.
