Chapter 35 Alex followed Etan, stopping as soon as he cleared the edge of the cannery. His brain rejected the input of his watering eyes, threatening to shut down all activities until he provided something more sensible. The burning truck was invisible under a thick plume of black smoke, sunken into a crater across the two lane road. Another truck and a car were on fire, one in each lane. Several bodies were scattered along the road and in the parking lot. Alex didn’t have to look closer to know Connor wasn’t one of them. He was thankful for that much. A crowd grew as people followed the light and stench, far worse than the diversion over toward the hospital. A few knelt over more bodies, probably caught in those last explosions.
