Nine The glass doors of the police station slide open and Ambrose lets me go in first, his warm hand on the small of my back. It's not a big thing, but it's one of my favourite things that he does, it makes me feel particularly loved. I wave at Topaz in her seat behind the reception desk. Despite my initial protest when she started working here, I'm glad she is. Not only is she doing a great job, but it's nice to always have a friendly face behind the front desk. She's wearing the headset lopsided and waves back, in her element as always. I smile as I spot my sister's fiancé walking through the hall. His whole face lights up when he sees her and a little finger-wave from her has him smiling like the biggest i***t. I love seeing how the two of them react with one another. I always worrie
