Kayla widened her eyes in shock as Grey slammed the door shut.
Pain and resentment filled her heart to the brim.
“I regret not running away earlier. Now I'm doomed!”
Kayla continued to lament weakly with extreme bitterness. She tried to get off the bed but felt like her legs were made of iron. The stinky and sticky liquid around her body and the bed irritated her endlessly.
Kayla managed to crawl into the bathroom and almost died before she could prop herself into the bathtub.
“Hmmm…” Kayla closed her eyes and the soothing effect of the water on her skin made her sleep off immediately.
…
Kayla opened her eyes and realized that she was still inside the bathtub. Her body felt more relaxed and better. She took her bath and entered the bedroom.
“What?...” Kayla blinked in astonishment as she saw a new soft bedspread and new pillows on the bed.
“Oh… the cleaner. That guy” Kayla slapped her head and got dressed. It was already in the afternoon and her stomach was growling with hunger.
“Hello madam” a maid approached Kayla as soon as she walked out of the room and led her to the dinning table.
“I brought your breakfast over in the morning, but you were not…”
Kayla nodded absentmindedly and stared at the table of dishes in front of her with a starved expression.
The maid bowed and disappeared into another part of the huge mansion. She sighed in sympathy. She was passing by yesterday and heard Kayla's screams and cries.
Kayla gobbled down all the dishes like an hungry wolf. Life had been hard on her ever since her father died, and even more in the hands of Grey West, a s****l p*****t!
A familiar figure walked pass and caught Kayla's attention.
“Hey” Kayla called out.
“Huh? Madam” Ray turned his head and saw the boss' wife. He moved closer to her and bowed.
Kayla looked up at him and felt more relaxed.
“Can you show me around the house?” Kayla asked and stared at him intently.
“Sure madam” Ray nodded and smiled. All the hurtful words and curses the boss had screamed at him in the morning evaporated that moment.
Kayla walked beside Ray as he introduced everything in the house to her.
“This is the study of the boss”
“This is…”
Kayla continued to stare at Ray with interest. She found it hard to believe that such a big man could work as a cleaner for anyone.
Ray introduced all the rooms and skipped the last room at the far corner of the mansion.
“That crude room at the corner, it's rough! Who lives there?” Kayla asked curiously as she studied the unsightly appearance of the room. No one would believe the house was actually built inside this same compound.
“Hmm…”
“That's my room madam” Ray bowed his head and spoke slowly.
“Huh…? You're the one living there? What about the other maids?” Kayla paused in shock and unbelief.
“They all live inside the mansion. The steward of the family, Blake Peterson, kept me here” Ray explained plainly.
“Ow!” Kayla nodded and felt touched. So this is where this man live.
“Can I take a look?” Kayla asked out of nowhere.
“Ahh… yes… yes madam” Ray stammered and sighed. This is his fate as an orphan.
Kayla shook her head in pity and felt touched for his condition. Perhaps it was because of Grey's torment that she was emotionally overactive these days, or probably there's another reason…
“When did you start working here? Why come here in the first place?” Kayla asked as Ray led the way to the secluded room behind the house.
Ray smiled and shook his head lightly.
“I can't even say clearly. For as long as I can remember madam, I've always worked here. I grew up here” Ray replied with indifference.
“What? Your parents left you in this damn…” Kayla exclaimed in surprise and covered her mouth.
“I'm an orphan madam. Even though I wasn't told, I remember I was brought over from the orphanage” Ray explained as he unlocked his room and led the boss' wife, or rather, the boss' scapegoat, madam, into his room.
The room was neat and well arranged. The interior contrasted sharply with the unsightly exterior of the room.
“You read?” Kayla eyes widened at the wide arrangement of books in the room.
“They educated me a little. And with no company or friends, books had been my company ever since” Ray explained briefly.
“You don't go out?” Kayla frowned slightly.
“Unlike the boss decides to take me out, which is rare” Ray walked into the room and pointed out interesting books from his old shelf. He could tell that madam was also a loner like himself.
“Are you comfortable here with this crazy household? Can't you run away?” Kayla asked in anger as she wondered how any sane person would cage an able bodied in this annoying place.
“No one will prefer being restricted like a slave if the way to escape is safe. I simply can't run madam. I will be found in no time”
Ray laughed lightly in amusement. He knew better than anyone how powerful the network of the West family was. Run away? That's a pipe dream!
“I'm sorry madam. But I have to go now. It's time to clean up Blake Peterson's room. He'll be arriving from Rome today” Ray checked the wall clock in the room and politely led Kayla out of the room.
“The Steward?” Kayla blinked in slight confusion.
“Yes, madam” Ray nodded and hurried into the mansion.
Kayla nodded and walked back into the mansion while shaking her head in pity. This guy's case really shook her. And it seems he was scared anytime he mentioned the name ‘Blake Peterson'. Lines of confusion appeared on her brows.
“Kayla!! Where are you coming from? Who let you out of the room?” Kayla trembled at the familiar voice and perfume.
“What? I can't even…”
“Sshh! Follow me!”
