Chapter Three: The First Echo

412 Words
The morning was different from the previous day. Not because anything obvious had changed… But because everyone had started feeling that there was something "unfinished" in their memories. As if the night had not properly closed. In the dining hall, the silence was less than yesterday… but far more tense. Everyone avoided the small details. As if talking about them might open a door that could never be closed again. Daniel Mercer (Detective): "I want to know only one thing… does any of you remember exactly what happened when we arrived at the main entrance? Step by step." No one answered immediately... Lucas Brennan (Writer): "I remember the gate was open… but now I cannot be sure if it really was." Ethan Blake (Technician): "The system records say it was closed and opened for us remotely." Lucas raised his eyes and said: "That does not match what I remember." This time, it was not just a small difference. It was three different versions of the same moment. Elena Whitmore (Resort Manager): "That is normal. Arriving at a new place can cause confusion with details." But this sentence no longer convinced anyone completely. Even her tone sounded less confident than yesterday. Maya spoke with confidence for the first time. Maya Collins (Employee): "I remember that someone was standing at the gate before we entered… but I cannot remember their face." The moment froze. Ethan Blake: "That is not recorded on any camera." But Maya insisted in a low voice: "I am sure they were there." Daniel did not respond immediately. But his mind was recording something different: The problem was not "who was right." The problem was that everyone was certain about contradictory things. Later, while inspecting the hallways, Daniel noticed something small on the ground near the entrance: A partially old identification card, with a name erased but not completely. The name was unclear… But the shape of the card suggested that it did not belong to this place. Daniel (quietly): "This was not here yesterday…" For the first time, no one tried to explain it away quickly. Even Elena did not speak immediately. Daniel stood near the window again, looking at the mountain. Then he said to himself quietly: "If their memories are changing… or contradicting each other… Then either the place is deceiving them… or something from the past has not been understood yet." Then he added after a moment of silence: "Or the beginning itself was not the same."
