"Follow me," he commanded.
Mia followed him through the back entrance and up the grand staircase. Her heart was thumping against her ribs like a trapped bird. She reached into her pocket and felt the corner of the check. It felt sharp against her skin. Five thousand dollars, she reminded herself. This is for the baby. This is for Dad.
They reached his bedroom door. It was a room she had never entered. He pushed it open and stepped inside, tossing his keys onto a marble table. The room was cold, lit only by the moonlight coming through the massive windows.
"Close the door," Damien said. He was already pulling off his tie.
Mia closed the door. The click of the lock felt like the end of her old life. She turned around to see him standing there, his shirt unbuttoned halfway. He looked powerful, angry, and dangerously handsome.
"You said you wanted a transaction, Mia," he said, his voice low and rough. "You set the price. Now, it’s time to earn it."
He walked toward her. He didn't stop until he was inches away, his shadow completely covering her. He reached out and grabbed her waist, pulling her flush against his hard body. Mia gasped, her hands landing on his chest. She could feel the steady, heavy beat of his heart.
"Look at me," he commanded.
Mia looked up. His gray eyes were dark with a mix of hunger and contempt. He wasn't going to be sweet. He wasn't going to say any kind words. He wanted to show her exactly what he thought of her choice.
He bent his head and kissed her. It wasn't a question; it was a command. He tasted like scotch and anger. His hands moved down to her hips, gripping her tightly, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them.
Mia felt a wave of heat wash over her. Despite the bad names he called her, her body wanted him. Her skin tingled where he touched her. She hated herself for it, but she couldn't stop her breath from hitching when his lips moved to the sensitive skin of her neck.
"Is this what you wanted?" he whispered against her skin, his voice sending shivers down her spine. "To be bought and sold?"
"I'm here, aren't I?" Mia whispered back, her voice shaking.
Damien groaned, a sound deep in his chest. He picked her up as if she weighed nothing and carried her to the large, silk-covered bed. He dropped her onto the soft mattress and hovered over her, his eyes never leaving hers.
"Then don't look away," he said, his voice full of command. "If I'm paying for you, I want to see exactly who I bought," "and hey, spread those legs widely, i don't like stress for my own money." he said rudely.
The night that followed was intense and overwhelming. Damien was a demanding lover. He touched her with a possessiveness that made her feel like she belonged to him completely. Every touch, every kiss, was a reminder of the deal they had made. He moved with a raw power that left Mia breathless, her fingers digging into his shoulders as she tried to stay afloat in the storm of sensations.
For a moment, in the heat of it, Mia forgot about the check. She forgot about the lies. She only felt him, the weight of him, the scent of him, and the way he made her feel like she was the only woman in the world, even if he hated her.
But when it was over, the coldness returned instantly.
Damien rolled away and stood up, not looking back at her. He walked to the bathroom, his silhouette dark against the moonlight.
"You can stay here tonight," he said, his voice devoid of any emotion. "But don't be here when I wake up. And Mia?"
Mia sat up, clutching the sheets to her chest, her hair messy and her heart still racing. "Yes?"
"Don't forget the check on the nightstand," he said cruelly. "I wouldn't want you to think I forgot to pay my help."
He closed the bathroom door, leaving Mia alone in the dark. She looked at the nightstand. There was a second check there. Another five thousand dollars.
She reached out and took it, her hand trembling. She had ten thousand dollars now. She was closer to freedom, but she felt more trapped than ever.
As she lay back down in the silence, she placed a hand on her stomach. I’m sorry, she thought to the tiny life inside her. I’m so sorry.
