I was in the kitchen helping our chef with dinner. She was a very skilled cook, but she did not have a wolf's nose! I knew the moment I entered the kitchen that something was missing in the dish she was making. When she found out she had forgotten a single herb, she looked at me in amazement and told me that one day I would become a good wife for a lucky man! Just because I could see that something was not right with her dish.
I smiled at her without telling her that when the day I met my mate, we would be very happy and that luck would not get the credit for it, only the moon goddess' love for her children would be the reason for it. But she did not know we were werewolves. She and everyone else in our staff were only humans. One of the many ways my father had fooled the world around us. Only other wolves would know the truth about us. When my mother died in childbirth, he had never told anyone about me, only those who worked for him. Over the years, female wolves had sought my father's favor, wanting to be his chosen mate, but he always rejected them, still not over his fated mate. And almost every Alpha who knew of my father's wolf had invited him to be a part of their pack. Hoping to never be without the protection of my father's smart perfume.
My father came into the kitchen, grabbed me by the waist and spun me around.
"I did it! I did it!" He cheered smiling from ear to ear! "It’ll all go as I hoped" he sat me down and hugged me as he continued to cheer
"Everything I've ever wanted will come true!"
I pulled myself away from him, smiling.
"What are you talking about dear father?" He pulled me into him again and secretly smiled at me.
"Later, when we are alone!" he patted my cheek and left the room and went into his study. I just knew it meant wolf stuff and that our staff was not allowed to hear about it. Although I was eager to know what was going on, I let him go and continued to check up on the dinner and dining room. Everything was perfect, and when dinner was ready, I went to the study and called my father.
We eat in silence when there were humans around us, to serve us. At the end of the meal, my father smiled at me as he got up from his seat, he asked me to come to his study right away. I followed him in there and he sat down on the couch, patted the seat next to him and I sat down. He took both my hands in his and looked at me with a big smile.
"I have him" he said! "And he will be yours!" I gaped.
"What who ... what?" I was lost with no idea what he was talking about.
"The Alpha! He's yours!"
He smiled big and was very happy with his announcement. I pulled my hands to me and crossed my arms over my chest.
"What do you mean? Which alpha? And what am I do with him?" I shook my head and my locks waved around me. My dad just smiled
"You’ll marry him!" I was in shock! Marry?
"But…. But… NO! I wont!" I got up and walked to the door, my wolf howling at the thought of letting someone other than our mate claim us. I heard my father sigh and turned to him. He looked lovingly at me
“Yes, you will! That's what I want. An agreement has been reached and you will do as I ask!" He told me patiently, as if he were talking to a small child.
"But why?" I asked to know. He came over and pulled me back to sit on the couch. "Because I need it, for you! I need to know that you are protected and taken care of!” I looked up at him and noticed the concern in him and his wolf.
"Sorry, but what?" I felt how my wolf was not happy at all, just like me! My father sighed again.
"I'm an old man, I can not claim that I will be here forever! And with a mate to take care of you ..." He looked at me
"I need to know that when I'm gone, you’ll someone to take care of you!" I smiled at him
"Then do not worry! There is a mate for me out there and I want him!" My wolf was about to calm down and then I saw the tears come in his eyes
“And how will you ever find him? Hardly anyone knows you exist. You never meet other wolves, and wolves are so scattered all over the country that the chance for you to meet him is so small! I need you to marry the Alpha and make him your mate!" I could feel how important it was to him. Even my wolf listened to him, no longer angry but sad. I got up, started walking around in the room while I thought about what he had said. My wolf just lay there following my thoughts. I had always been waiting for my mate, always longing for the day we met!
"That's not all we long for," my wolf said to me. I stopped "What more do we want?" I inquired. "To belong! To have a pack!" She bowed her head "you know it's true!" she continued, just as I was going to tell her we were happy just as long we had my father! Then I felt it, that longing to be with other wolves, others who were like us! And I knew she was right! I looked at my father, who was waiting for me to speak.
"Who is the Alpha you are talking about?" There were not many left and even fewer around here, not to mention one without a mate!
He jumped up and smiled
"It's the Alpha!" as if that would explain everything.
"Who?" I looked at him confused.
"You know, him on whose land we live!" I looked at him in dismay.
"Do you want me to marry that old wolf?" I knew he had lost his mate the year before, but I did not think he was looking for a new one. My father shook his head.
"No my darling, his son!" He smiled and walked to the window, from which he had a view of the packhouse towering up behind the trees.
"Last night the old Alpha died, he died quietly as he slept and left his son to become the new Alpha." He looked back at me, “I left as soon as I heard it this morning. I have been meeting with the elders and the new Alpha all day!" He looked out the window again "They all agree that it is almost impossible for him to meet his mate, and in these times a pack can not do without a Luna, and they have already been without for half a year!" he went back and sat on the couch and looked at me,
"We will become part of a pack, you’ll be there Luna and you get a mate!" My father looked at me and I felt his love and concern. It was my turn to go to the window. I looked at the packhouse, a place I have never been, but I had always longed to visit it. To keep me secret, my father had always kept me at home. Without me having met anyone other than our human staff. When I turned fourteen, I begged him for weeks to let me go and train with the packs wolves. He denied it because he did not want anyone to ever think he or I were wolves. Even though we lived on the grounds, we were never part of the pack. My father always remained a lone wolf. Now he wanted us to be members of a pack and for me to be Luna. My wolf howled in longing to be in a pack, to get a mate. Knowing that our father was right, she was willing to settle down with a chosen wolf and not the mate that the moon goddess had chosen for us. I sighed heavily and turned to my father
"I will do it and so will my wolf!" He jumped up in cheers, put his arms around me and kissed my forehead
"I knew you would, you're too smart not to!" I smiled at him, hugged him back and then pulled away from him. "I’ll go to my room, to go to bed" I quickly kissed his cheek and left him standing there happy and smiling.
Even before I entered my room, I said to my wolf:
"I’ll to do it, marry him and be his Luna" I warned her though "but I will not let him mark us!"
