The Basement

348 Words
The stairs groaned beneath their weight as Damien and Nyx descended into the basement. The air grew heavier with each step, thick with the sharp sting of spilled chemicals. When they reached the bottom, Damien froze. The basement was chaos. File cabinets lay toppled across the floor, drawers wrenched open, papers scattered like fallen leaves. Photographs, reports, and fragments of evidence littered the ground, curling at the edges from dampness. Nyx wrinkled her nose, covering her mouth with her sleeve. “Damn… what happened here?” Damien’s flashlight beam swept across the wreckage. Somewhere in the distance, a faint sound whispered through the silence a hiss, steady and low, like water flowing through unseen pipes. He frowned. “What’s that noise?” They moved slowly, picking their way through the mess. Nyx bent to lift a photograph, her eyes narrowing at the blurred image of a wrecked car. Damien crouched beside a pile of folders, his hand trembling as he brushed dust from a file stamped with his last name. He opened it just enough to see the words: Female victim. Car accident. Brake line cut. His breath caught. Is this about my parents? The thought clawed at him, but he couldn’t bring himself to read further. He shoved the file into his bag, the weight of it pressing against him like a secret too heavy to carry. Nyx moved deeper into the basement, her flashlight cutting through the shadows. Suddenly, she stopped. Her breath hitched, sharp and audible. “Damien” The gasp in her voice sent him running. He rounded the corner, his beam jerking across the floor until it landed on the sight that froze him in place. Henry’s body lay sprawled across the concrete, a pool of blood spreading beneath him, dark and glistening in the light. His face was slack, his eyes open but empty, staring at nothing. Damien’s stomach lurched. The hiss in the background seemed louder now, filling the silence around the corpse. Nyx’s voice was low, shaken but steady. “I think we know what happened down here now.”
