Huntsmans Whistle

2045 Words
I woke up around noon with a warm fuzzy feeling in my stomach. As I sat up Wesley walked through the door smiling. “hey, so ill be staying here with you now so I brought a couple things” he motioned to a small flat-screen TV sitting on a table near the foot of the bed  “wait you will be living here with me?” he nodded   “as in my apartment, with me?” he grinned and walked over to where I was sitting and said “is that a problem? Should I sleep out in the dog house?”  I laughed at the pun and he smiled. I blushed as I said “no, you can sleep here, with me” he blushed a little and pulled a little container out of his pocket. “hey I still feel really bad about earlier so I bought you this muscle balm and it will help with the bruising” I stood up and took the balm in my hand. I pulled up my shirt a little bit expecting a nasty bruise but found nothing, not a single mark what so ever.  I looked at Wesley and uncertainty crossed his expression. “its not there” I observed as he looked down at it and said “your wolf blood is beginning to work its magic for the first time in years so it could be unpredictable. This however is common. We never suffer from injuries for long. We have insane healing qualities.”  There was a knock at my apartment door. I went to walk to the door and Wesley grabbed my wrist and shook his head no. I rolled my eyes “its probably John” the knock came again but louder. Wesley motioned for me to hush and put me behind him.  He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He flinched suddenly and took up a defensive stance. I watched as his sideburns grew out. And his eyes and ears changed as he opened his mouth revealing k-9s. “ you cant come in unless your invited dumbass”  I heard a laugh from the other side. “Oh Mr. Reeves I just needed confirmation that the Morgenstern girl was in there.”I heard a whistle and dropped to my hands and knees in pain. My whole body was on fire and my stomach twisted and knotted.  Wesley shot over to me. “What’s wrong?!” I was in too much pain to try and answer and this just worried him more. I began to taste blood in my mouth. I looked up at Wesley and he turned pale with a sudden realization. “He has the Huntsman’s whistle” Wesley looked at his hands and saw he wasn’t changing but he was beginning to have a head ache.  “Skylar where’s the pain?!” before I could attempt to answer my body lurched. My gums began bleeding as my k-9s grew in. Tears began rolling down my face as I was on the verge of passing out. Wesley jumped up half morphing and breaking through my door at the vampire. The look of surprise on the blood suckers face brought me relief. Actually, the fact that in all the chaos he dropped that god forsaken whistle brought me relief.  As soon as Wesley had grabbed the vampire up by its throat he slammed him down breaking two stairs on the stair way. Before the vampire could react Wes snatched him up by his throat again and pinned him against the wall and shoved his hand into the vampires chest. The red headed vampire gasped in pain.  I heard this blood curdling roar escape Wesley’ body as he ripped the vampires heart out. He turned to look at me. I had been crying from the pain and now the sickness I felt in my body. I stopped crying from shock when I saw Wesley.  His baby blue t- shirt he had been wearing was now splattered in dark red.  Blood had sprayed up a little on his face, his teeth were jutting out and his face looked changed. His jaw had jutted out by maybe an inch and his nose looked odd as well. It slowly went back to normal and he just looked at me.  He began walking back to me as he wiped the blood from his hand and onto his jeans. He dropped down to his knees in front of me. I took a deep breath and whispered. “where is the whistle..?” he glanced over by the vampires body. It lay crushed In the door way by the vampires non beating heart. Wesley looked at me and said “are you okay ?” I began nodding but shook my head and burst into tears instead.  He pulled me into his arms and held me to his chest. “I am so sorry Skylar. He must have followed me here. If I had known he had the whistle before I would have killed him sooner, I swear”  I pulled my head back and took a shuddering breath “What the hell was that? Wes what was happening to me?” he jerked his head in the direction of the whistle. “That whistle is a painful device crafted by werewolf hunters centuries ago.  They used it to force a new werewolf to change rapidly before they are ready. It is known to be extremely painful. The actual natural change is about half of that your first time and then its supposed to change and become easier every time. But what you went through just now proves just how strong you are. Everyone in our pack probably would have died from the pain, but your stronger than them, so much stronger”.  We sat silently for a few more minutes until I didn't feel dizzy or sick. I crouched on my feet and took Wesley's blood covered hands. “Come on, let's get you washed up.”  He laughed out loud “I can't believe you are worried about me being dirty when you just went through one of the most painful things a wolf can endure.”  I pulled him into a standing position and said “Well for damn sure I'm no damsel in distress”. He grinned and looked at me, catching my eye “Joking too? Wow, I really underestimated how much you can take Skylar.”  I pulled him into the bathroom and began looking for a rag. Wes spoke up behind me “What are you looking for?” I shook my head in realization. “I was looking for a rag, but John still hasn't given me funds to buy things like that.”  He pulled his stained shirt off and said “Can I use this if it gets rinsed out?” I snatched it from him and ran it underneath some hot water.  “I'm the same as anybody when my facade breaks. I'm not stronger mentally or  physically. I just have a strong cover” He just continued to watch me. Slowly but surely most of the fresh blood came out. I turned to Wes and began wiping his face off.  The blood was covering some of his best features, but I eventually got it off enough where he looked like himself again. As I was finishing off the little spots on his cheek he reached his hand up and clasped my hand to his face and closed his eyes. “I'm so glad you came home”  I felt my heart flutter. “Me too” he smiled at me and grabbed the shirt. “I can finish this up later. I need to go burn that bloodsuckers body” a sick feeling came over me at the fact of burning a body. “Why do you have to burn it?”  He tossed the shirt aside. And led me out of the bathroom and into the living room where the vampires body sat. “When a vampire is killed they don't always stay 'dead’ dead. You have to burn the body and destroy the heart In order to keep them from coming back. Don't ask me how, cause honestly I don't know either.” I nodded slowly as he walked over to the vampires body and picked it up quickly.  Wesley then proceeded to exit out the door and walked out into the clearing and laid the body down. He walked back into the garage and grabbed a can of gasoline before walking back outside.  I watched through the window as he doused the vampires body in gasoline. After the can was emptied he jogged back to the garage.  A few moments later he came up into my room and gave me a nod before picking up the vampires heart and heading back downstairs.  It took about twenty minutes for him to finish burning the body and destroying the heart. I slipped on my tennis shoes and walked downstairs to the garage and out the door to the yard. Wes was standing over the fire watching the embers sizzle and burn to Ash.  He seen me and gave me a sly smile. “Hey Sky” I smiled back “hey”. He kicked a little dirt onto the fire to put it out. “So I have a proposition for you Sky and it's very dangerous. It's completely up to you though…”  I walked up to him and took his hand in mine. “Tell me” he looked nervous and worried as he spoke. “Well as you are probably wondering where everyone is I'm going to inform you that they all left for Oregon to speak with the pack elders… including your brother”.  I furrowed my brows in thought “Why did they take Logan?” He shoved his other fist in his pocket. “I asked them to in case you chose to go through with my proposal”.  I looked at him expectantly and he continued. “Obviously, you don't want to wear your ring anymore. So I talked it over with the pack and we all agree that if you're okay with it, that I could have you alone for the next couple weeks in order to help you learn to transform”. Curiosity flooded my veins as I nerously said “I'll do it” He gave a short smile before saying “I'm glad you decided to be your true self. Because of the possible danger I was going to just have you and Logan keep your rings and live a normal human life, but now you can take your place as alpha female. That means caring for your pack like you do your brother”.  I looked at Wes and said “I know”. There was a short silence until I broke it. “ So what's next?” He pulled his keys out of his jeans pocket. “ Now we go shopping”. What? Shopping? How will this help me transform??  He must have guessed what I was thinking because he said “I know you're probably eager to learn how to transform but it will come, there are a lot of things we need to prepare with, like food, rope, water, and a few other things of course”.  “Rope?” He started walking to the car. “Um wes what is the rope for??” He opened the car passenger door as I walked to his Jeep. “The rope is for my protection” he chuckled “ your dangerous right now”  I hopped in the Jeep as he walked around and opened the driver's side door and hopped in. He started the Jeep as I said “so where exactly are we going?” He started the engine “first Walmart, then a hardware store, and finally my parents house” we pulled out of the driveway. “Why your parents house?”  “Well I need to get a few things and they want to see you” I nodded and looked out the window as we passed the bubbling Brook that ran alongside John's property. We pulled out and turned right down a single lane road.  I casually looked over at Wesley as he drove. I could see slight stubble forming along his jawline and a mole above the peek of his cheek bone. He caught me looking at him and smiled. I faced the window the rest of the ride, which lasted about ten minutes. The road opened up to a small town.  On the left was a Shell gas station and an auto mechanic shop and for a while a few rows of novelty stores lined the street on either side. We turned right at a four way past a sign that said ‘Mercer station’ maine.  We took another right and pulled into a small Walmart parking lot. Wes pulled into an empty parking spot and put the car in park. He look at me and said “let's go shopping”
