Chapter 5-What I Hid

643 Words
Adrian POV I always knew this day would show up. Honestly, I spent three years trying to stop it from happening. Three years staying away from Elena. Three years just... watching her from a distance. Three years repeating to myself that if she hated me, she'd survive. I guess I was wrong. The bloodline woke up. Now they know where she is. “Elena,” I said, barely more than a whisper. She was standing across the room, eyes locked on me. “Tell me everything.” I wanted to spill it all. God, I wanted to. But saying it out loud would wreck everything. “You're not sick.” She tensed up, jaw tightening. “I already figured that out.” “You're different.” She frowned. “Different how?” I looked at the mark under her collarbone. “That mark showed up because something inside you woke up.” “What are you talking about?” I couldn't say it. Not yet. She stepped closer. “Three years ago, you told me I was the most important person in your life.” “You were.” “Then you just disappeared.” “Yeah.” “You came back just to push me away again.” “Yeah.” “And now I’m supposed to believe I’m part of some supernatural bloodline?” “Yeah.” She stared hard at me. “You sound insane.” I let out a shaky breath. “I know.” “So prove it.” I couldn’t. If I did, I’d be exposing her to even more danger. “Elena, there are families who’ve blended in with normal people for generations.” “Families?” “People like mine.” I kept my mouth shut. Her eyes went wide. “Oh my God.” She took a step back. “Your family knows.” “Yes.” “And you’ve known this whole time?” “Yes.” I could see the hurt behind her eyes. God, I hated this part. “You knew.” “I knew enough to realize staying with me would put you in danger.” “You should’ve trusted me.” “I was trying to keep you safe.” “You broke my heart.” “I know.” She turned her back to me. I wanted nothing more than to hold her, but I didn’t move. I lost that right. Then, quietly, she asked, “What happened that night?” I froze. She turned around, searching my face. “I keep seeing things.” Her words punched me in the gut. “You shouldn’t remember any of it.” “But I do.” She took another step, voice trembling now. “I saw you.” My pulse hammered in my ears. “You were hurt.” I didn’t answer. “And there was another man.” Silence hung between us. “The man who died.” I closed my eyes. She must have seen my face change. “You were there.” I met her eyes. “Yes.” Something flickered in her gaze. “What did you do?” “I didn’t kill him.” “Then why were you there?” “He was trying to protect you.” “From what?” Before I could answer, my phone buzzed. I glanced at the screen. One message. WE KNOW WHERE SHE IS. Then another. AND WE KNOW ABOUT THE CHILD. Ice flooded my veins. Elena noticed the color drain from my face. “What child?” I looked up, slow as hell. She just stood there, scared, lost—no idea what was really going on. Then she pressed a hand to her stomach. “I’ve been feeling weird for weeks.” My heart stopped. Another message popped up. THE CHILD IS THE KEY.
