Chapter 6 — The Truth She Didn't Know

Elena POV
“What child?”
My voice barely made a sound.
Adrian stared right at me. He looked gutted, like he’d lost the one thing he had left.
“Adrian.”
He just kept looking at me, silent.
“What's inside me?”
He took a step toward me.
I backed away.
“No.”
“Elena, please, listen to me.”
“No. You don’t get to decide what I can know anymore.”
His face softened.
“You’re pregnant.”
The world stopped. I just stared.
“No.”
“I know this is a shock.”
“I can’t have children.”
“I know.”
Those three words shook me.
“You knew?”
“I knew what the doctors told you.”
I shook my head.
“No. They said I couldn’t have kids.”
He didn’t look away. Not once.
“They were wrong.”
I put my hand on my stomach. My mind spun—dizziness, weird dreams, the mark, the heartbeat I’d heard. Suddenly, all of it clicked.
“How far?”
“About six weeks.”
I had to sit down. Adrian crouched in front of me, careful not to touch me.
“You should have told me.”
“I didn’t know.”
“You’ve known for weeks.”
“I found out recently.”
“Then why didn’t you say anything?”
“I wanted to be sure first.”
“Sure of what?”
Something in his eyes changed. Darkened.
“The child’s father.”
My heart froze.
“What do you mean?”
He hesitated. Then it hit me.
“You don’t think the baby’s yours.”
“I know what happened that night.”
I stared at him.
“I don’t remember that night.”
“I know.”
“So how do you know?”
He looked away.
“Because I was there.”
I felt my anger light up again.
“You keep saying that!”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You keep acting like ‘protecting me’ forgives everything!”
He stood up.
“I made a mistake.”
“No, you made a choice.”
“Yes.”
“You left me.”
“Yes.”
“You let me think you stopped loving me.”
His voice went quiet.
“I never stopped.”
I looked at him. For a second, I almost believed.
Then my phone buzzed. A new message.
Ask Adrian who the child’s real father is.
I looked up at him slowly. His face had gone stone still.
That’s when I realized there was one question he’d been running from.
