“Who’s the child’s father?”
Adrian just stood there. Didn’t say a word.
Something inside me just cracked.
“You said the truth would protect me.”
“I told you I was trying to keep you safe.”
“Then tell me!”
He shut his eyes.
“It’s the man you saw in your memory.”
I went cold.
“The one who’s dead?”
He nodded. “Yes.”
I got to my feet.
“So you’re telling me he’s the father?”
“I think so.”
“How?”
“Because of what happened that night.”
“What happened?”
He turned to the window and didn’t answer.
“You weren’t supposed to remember.”
“But I do,” I said.
“Only bits and pieces.”
“Then help me remember the rest.”
He shook his head. “It’s dangerous.”
“Lying to me is dangerous too.”
He just went quiet.
Finally, he nodded. “We’ll find out what happened.”
“Finally. We actually agree on something.”
He moved for the door—then paused. “Don’t go anywhere alone.”
I almost laughed. “Still trying to tell me what to do?”
He didn’t look away. “Yes.”
“At least you’re not lying now.”
Our eyes met, and everything in the room shifted. Something old. Something raw. And it hurt.
Then my phone rang.
I knew the number: the hospital.
My heart just dropped.
“Hello?”
A nurse was on the other end. “Ms. Hart, we need you to come in.”
“Why?”
“There’s an issue with your medical records.”
“What kind of issue?”
“We found something unusual.”
I looked over at Adrian.
“What?” I asked, voice not really sounding like mine.
“We think your previous fertility results were changed.”
I just stopped. Breathing, thinking, everything.
“What did you say?”
“Someone altered your medical records three years ago.”
The call ended. I stared at Adrian.
“You knew.”
He didn’t deny it.
“So who did it?”
“My father.”
He said it quietly.
I just stared.
“Your father?”
He nodded. “Yes.”
“Why would your father change my medical records?”
Adrian glanced at my stomach.
“Because he knew about the child before either of us did.”
