Chapter 8 — His Father's Secret

435 Words
Adrian POV People always talked about my father’s power, but that never really scared me. What I feared was what he knew. That man always had secrets—some deeper than I wanted to imagine. Growing up, he gave me one rule: never ask questions about the Vale bloodline. Of course I broke it. Three years ago. And I did it for Elena. Now I was paying the price. “My father knew Elena was pregnant,” I said. My security chief didn’t hide his confusion. “How?” “He pulled her medical records.” “Three years back?” “Yeah.” “That doesn’t add up.” “It doesn’t have to.” I stared at the old photo on my desk—me, Elena, and a dead man. Three years ago. Something was off in that picture. Someone else had been just out of frame. My father's assistant. He was dead now, like he’d vanished right when it was most convenient. I grabbed my phone. “Dig up everything you can find about him.” My security chief nodded and left. That’s when Elena called. “Adrian.” Her voice was shaky. “What’s wrong?” “I found something.” My pulse quickened. “What is it?” “It’s a file. My medical file.” I felt cold all over. “What does it say?” “My fertility results—they’re not mine.” I stood up so fast my chair nearly toppled. “Elena, where are you now?” “At the hospital.” “Get out of there.” “I’m not leaving.” “Elena, please.” She went quiet. Then she whispered, “Someone’s here.” That did it. Ice in my veins. “Who?” “I don’t know.” A crash on the other end. Then nothing. “Elena?” No answer. “Elena!” The call dropped. I snatched my jacket. My security chief appeared almost instantly. “Where to?” he asked. “The hospital.” We got there in record time, but not fast enough. Elena was gone. A nurse sat on the floor, hands shaking. “What happened?” I demanded. She pointed down the hallway. “Three men came. They took her.” “Where?” She just shook her head, eyes wide. At the elevator, something caught my eye—a silver pendant. I’d seen it at Elena’s apartment before, but this time, someone had carved words into it: COME ALONE, ADRIAN. And under that—four more words that chilled me. OR SHE LOSES EVERYTHING.
