Chapter 1 — The Rejection
Elena POV
"It's over."
Two words. They hit like a punch I never saw coming.
I just sat there, staring at Adrian Vale. Maybe I wanted to catch a flicker of doubt on his face—something to show he didn't mean it. But his expression stayed locked, stone-cold. His eyes? Even icier. Nothing.
Three years. I spent three years loving this man, building him up in my mind, believing we could take on anything. Now, he's ending it all—just like that.
"Look at me," I said, as quietly as I could.
"I am looking at you."
"No. You're looking through me."
His jaw tightened, and that—God, that hurt more than his words. Adrian only got that way when he was hiding something.
"You deserve someone better," he said finally.
I almost laughed. The nerve.
"That's your explanation?"
"It's the truth."
"No, Adrian. It isn't."
My chair scraped back. My hands wouldn't stop shaking, but I wasn't about to let him see that.
"You vanished from my life three years ago. No explanation. Nothing. Then you came back, months later—acting like you hadn't just disappeared. And now you're telling me I'm not good enough for you?"
"That's not what I'm saying."
"Then what are you saying?"
He just sat there, silent. Adrian always did that—gave silence as an answer, like words cost him too much.
I swallowed hard.
"Did you ever love me?"
For a second, I saw past the cold billionaire act. I glimpsed the Adrian I remembered. The man who waited outside my apartment late at night, just to walk me home. Who knew exactly how I took my coffee every morning. Who once told me I made him feel like he wasn't carrying the world alone.
Then I blinked, and the wall went back up.
"You need to forget me."
My whole chest squeezed tight.
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one you're getting."
I grabbed my bag and stood. I wanted to storm out, but my feet felt heavy. I made myself turn away.
"Elena."
I froze.
His voice sounded different. It wasn't cold anymore. Something—fear?—crept in.
I glanced over my shoulder. "What?"
"Don't trust anyone who asks about your past."
The room spun for a second. My stomach dropped.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
He stood up too. "Nothing."
"You can't do that. You can't drop something like that and then say it means nothing."
He stepped toward me. Without thinking, I moved back. He stopped. For one second, he looked... pained.
"I need you to stay away from me."
"First you tell me to forget you. Now you're warning me about people I don't even know. Which is it, Adrian?"
His eyes stayed locked on mine. "Both."
I shook my head, my heart thumping. "I hate you."
He barely flinched, but his fists clenched.
"Good."
I stared right back at him. "Why?"
"Because hatred will keep you away from me."
Before I could even process all that, he turned and walked out.
I just stood there, trying to breathe. Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
You should have asked him why he left three years ago.
I felt ice sliding through my veins. Another message blinked on my screen.
Because the truth isn't human.
I just stared. And then came a third.
And neither are you.
My fingers went numb. I looked up toward the restaurant entrance. Adrian was gone, but someone was watching me from the other side of the window.
And when our eyes met, the stranger smiled.
