Chapter 32 — Well What Do You Know

Henry plastered a smile on his face. “Likewise,” he replied, arm outstretched. Jacob smiled tightly, but took his hand. “Hi, Mr Gareth,” Lena said, waving slightly. “Good to see you, Lena.” Maggie came over, taking Henry's hand in hers. “I'm so sorry about the other day.” Henry smiled politely. “Don't sweat it, Maggie.” “Please, everyone, let's get fully acquainted over dinner,” Abby said, pointing to the table. Everyone followed. Lena bumped her shoulder against mine, smiling softly. “I didn't know you were coming here,” I whispered. “Me neither.” We both took seats close to each other. Andrew pulled out a seat close to mine, but— “I'll take this seat,” Henry said, glaring at him. He gritted his teeth, brows pinched together in annoyance. “Henry dear, come sit with me,” Mum said. His jaw clenched tightly, eyes finding mine. I smirked tauntingly and he scowled. Then slowly, his grip loosened from the chair, and he walked towards Mum. The seat Mum reserved for him was directly opposite mine. So it was hard to ignore his piercing gaze. “Jesus Christ…” Andrew murmured, taking his seat. “Is he always like that?” “Only on special occasions,” I replied. When no guy was actively trying to get with me. “That's a bit unhealthy. Why'd your mum settle for someone like him?” “And why would she not?” “He obviously looks like a violent person.” “Trust me, he's not.” I said, waving dismissively. This night alone made me realize how possessive Henry could be. Violent, on the other hand… That one was a bit tricky, because he wasn't a loud person. He wasn't the kind of person to wear anger on his sleeve. He was definitely a gentleman… A gentleman who knew how to handle violence in a controlled manner. The kind of man you could trust to handle murder like a businessman. Soon enough—food was served and everyone dug in. Mum, Maggie and Abby chatted animatedly. While Jacob and his friend remained deep in conversation. Henry stayed quiet, mostly chiming in whenever mum asked him a question. I nudged Lena, and she glanced at me. “The man your Dad came in with, who's he?” I whispered. She shrugged. “His friend.” “He's freaking hot,” I said, grinning. She scoffed, almost as though his presence wasn't important to her… but the light blush staining her ears said otherwise. I smiled coyly… Something was definitely up. But I would worry about that later. Right now— I had one pesky guy trying to get my attention. “What?” I growled, turning to Andrew. “I was just asking what firm you're going to work with after uni?” Seriously? “E.A” I replied. “I'm going with Welco Limited.” “You're not registering under your Dad's company?” “Nah… I think I need to find my way into society.” Yeah… like you didn't find your way into Welco with Daddy's connection. “So… Jacob,” Abby called. “I was waiting for you to introduce us to your friend.” Jacob chuckled lightly. “I apologize for my manners. Abby. This is my friend, Samuel Martins.” Samuel smiled softly. “Meet our host, Abby Goldwells and friends.” “It is nice to meet you all,” Samuel said, politely. “Good Lord, what's with all these hot men today, Abby? Is there some show going on?” Maggie teased. Abby laughed. “I wish there was, but I'd have to imagine what kind of show it'd be.” “Maybe we could make it a strip show.” “Maggie.” Mum chastised. “What?” Maggie whined. “There are kids here, remember.” “You mean over twenty kids or below eighteen.” Mum rolled her eyes, shaking her head. “Outside of us parents, they can be adults, but between us… they're kids.” Maggie scoffed, flicking her hair over her shoulder. “Proper much.” she muttered. “Excuse you.” Mum shot back. “Alright ladies, let us all calm down,” Abby said. Lena and I glanced at each other with a snicker. Trust was… both of us never understood how we managed to stay close friends when our moms literally annoyed the f**k out of each other. Maybe it was because her dad and my mum worked together or maybe… It was because Lena's mum and my dad used to be best friends. Who knows. But I couldn't blame Maggie though. Mum was so stuck-up, and I wasn't sorry for saying it. Although she didn't use to be that way. I guess her spark died alongside my dad… or rather he took it with him. …….. A few minutes after the meal, drinks were served. Low murmurs and quiet conversations melded with the clink of glasses and the soft blues that played in the background. “So Henry,” Abby said, breaking into the quiet conversation. “Denise says you're an aerospace engineer, and you also teach at Eden university.” “Yes I do.” Henry replied. “Wow… you must be an intelligent man then.” Henry chuckled softly, then he opened his mouth to say something, but Jacob cut him off mid-speech. “Not all aerospace engineers are intelligent, Abby,” Jacob said with a slight scoff. “Both the world and this moment don't revolve around you, Jacob.” Maggie cut in sharply. “I'm just saying… his job is not that much of a big deal—” “The only thing bigger than your ego is your philandering nature, Jacob.” Well. Well. Well. What do you know?
