CHAPTER 22: THE DISAPPEARANCE

1035 Words

ASHER'S POV The bed is empty. I stand in the doorway staring at the damn thing like maybe if I blink hard enough, he will reappear. The sheets are cold. Not just cool, cold. No indent on his body. No sign he even got back into bed after the last time the nurse came in. "Hunter?" I call, even though I know he isn't here. My voice echoes weirdly in the room. Feels too quiet. I walk over and touch the blanket. Nothing. His scent,.faint. Barely there. I don't know how long he's been gone, but it isn't five minutes. It's been hours. Panic slams into my chest so fast I have to grip the edge of the bed frame. What if someone came back? What if Vera didn't finish the job before and now she— "No," I mutter to myself. "No, he wouldn't leave herself wide open like that again."
