tit for tat

487 Words
đŸ–€ “TIT FOR TAT — AND THEN WHAT?” You cut me once, I cut you twice— you played me cold, I played you ice. You shut me out, I slammed it shut, you bruised my heart, I bruised your gut. You walked away, I dragged you back, you hid your truth, I kept my track. You pulled your love, I pulled my sting— we matched each move, we matched each swing. You went quiet, I went loud, you withdrew, I stood my ground. You pulled back hard, I pushed in deep— you’d try to rest, I’d steal your sleep. You shut down, I blew apart, you turned numb, I aimed for heart. You froze up first, I froze up last— we fed the war, we fed the past. You hid your pain, I showed you mine, I made sure you would feel the line. You dropped your trust, I dropped it too— we mirrored scars we never knew. You’d run off hurt, I’d chase you down, you’d lose your calm, I’d lose my crown. You’d back away, I’d break your peace— neither one of us found release. You’d pull inside, I’d call you out, you turned to fear, I turned to shout. You held your pride, I held my spite— we dragged that anger through the night. You made me bleed, I made you pay, you broke me then, I broke your day. You cracked a piece, I cracked it back— we kept our war on track for track. But here’s the truth I see clear now: I fought you ’cause I hurt somehow. I wasn’t weak, I wasn’t right— I just swung hard ’cause you’d ignite. And yeah, I gave back what you gave, we both were wild, we both misbehaved. I’m not pure, and you ain’t too— we built a battlefield for two. But listen close— that was before. I’m not walking that path no more. I don’t pick games that wreck my soul, I don’t choose battles with no goal. I don’t choose “get you ‘cause you got me.” I don’t choose pride over what could be. I don’t choose pain we lived back then— I’m done repeating that again. I choose the man who stands here now, not who we were when we broke down. I choose the fight that builds us up, not tear-down rounds that end in dust. I choose the truth, not tit for tat. I choose the ‘you’ beyond all that. I choose the part of us that stayed— the part we never let decay. I choose the side where love stands tall, not who we were behind that wall. I choose the peace we never had— the one worth keeping, good or bad. I don’t choose war. I don’t choose then. I choose you— right now, again.
