Chapter 2

“Are you sure? This can’t be true!” Sebastian whisper shouted. After we had come back from the meeting, without any good news, everyone had descended to their rooms. Most of us had university or school and the elders had work. Everybody had agreed with my decision—they knew whatever I did was right. To them, their alpha was much more important than rights over someone else’s territory. Sebastian and I had come into my room to talk over the matter that had got my nerves haywire. “I am—I think he is my mate. Celine has been so jittery since we came back and she is not happy with me and I felt like,” I stopped, thinking of the moment he stood close to me, when he had whispered in my ear, when his hand grasped my wrist, “We had some kind of connection. Like I knew him long before than this.” Sebastian sighed. He held his hands over his eyes tightly, like he was tired, all of a sudden. Are you going to tell the pack?” he asked slowly. “No! NO! We can’t! I can’t.” My voice was louder than it was intended and he looked around, in worries of someone barging in through the door right now. “They will only feel like making me the alpha was a bad decision and I am the one who has to protect them. I can’t simply accept the fact that I have found my mate and leave them! I can’t! Dad wouldn’t have approved of it, Seba. You can’t tell this to anyone. I don’t want anyone to worry about me leaving them. I am not going to.” I explained to him, holding his hands firmly. He looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time. He let go of my hand and pulled me in for a hug, tightly planting me to his chest. His hand stroked by long brown hair up and down. “You know, you will have to accept him some day. Your wolf will only grow more restless with the passing days,” he softly said. I didn’t reply. I didn’t want to and instead, I hugged him tighter. “We have uni tomorrow,” I informed him. “Yeah, better go to sleep or Mr. Henders will have my head. I still don’t understand how you are his star student,” He chuckled, making me laugh with him too. We said our good nights and he left for his room. Lying down on my bed, I pulled the comforter up to my chest, looking towards the ceiling. The picture of my dad and me, when I was five years old, placed on my bedside table, found my attention. I held it in front of my face, running my finger over the glass. We looked so happy and we actually were. “Dad, why did you have to leave me so soon?” I asked. My voice sounded heavy and choked, “I found my mate, dad and it’s scary. I don’t know what to do. I wish you were here to guide me. I hope you will be proud of me and my decision.” I hugged the picture to my chest. In the distance, I could hear the howls of a wolf and I fell into a deep darkness. In the morning, I found myself hugging the photo frame of my dad and me to my chest, probably had fallen asleep holding it. Placing it carefully on the table, I got up from bed, only to realize that it was too early for anyone to even be up right now. I sighed, sitting back down on the corner of my bed again. Celine was giving me a hard time and if this continued, I will be drained of all my energy. Walking down the stairs slowly, trying to not make a noise, I made my way into the kitchen. The coffee brewer had already been started by someone. How can someone be awake so early in the morning? I had always felt that it was a punishment to get up early in the morning, especially when I had slept so late last night. I took out a cup of coffee for myself, mixing it with enough milk and sugar. I drank the coffee like it was water. Walking outside the house, I felt cold. I hadn’t changed my clothing from last night. I was still wearing my sports bra and short pants that I had worn to bed. I was surprised to find Sebastian doing reps of pushups. He had brought out all the weights from the gym. When I was younger, I had really hoped that he would end up as my mate. You couldn’t simply ignore how hot he was. His light brown hair stuck up permanently, giving him a messy hair look and his deep blue eyes looked like sapphires, sparkling in the sunlight. You wouldn’t believe that he was just twenty one, just two years older to me, with the muscled body that he had—strong arms, strong shoulders, toned chest and he had lips that anyone would kill for. “How are you up so early?” I walked over to him and lifted up a few weights myself. We had to keep ourselves fit and strong at all times. It came in handy a lot of times. “I can ask you the same,” He said with a smile, looking at me sideways, keeping up the pace of pushups. “Want to have a hand to hand? I am in the mood.” I smirked down at him. “Bring it on, girl,” He jumped up to his feet, taking up his fighting stance. We circled each other for a few moments, before he charged at me with an upper hook. Dodging it easily, I hooked my ankle behind his knee, pulling him down to his knees. In another second, I pulled his right arm to his back in a death hold. He tapped in another moment. “That was too fast even for you,” I said letting his arm go. “Dude, you were placed first in combats! And I was tired from so working out so hard.” He defended. “Aww, poor baby. Are you embarrassed?” I asked, taunting him. He pushed me away laughing. “Let’s have another round.” I suggested, standing in my fighting stance again. “This time won’t be easy,” He told me, trying to be menacing. I only laughed, taunting him more. After three more losses from Sebastian’s side, we are heading inside the house. He had nearly won one time, when he had held me in a death hold, threatening to break my neck if I didn’t yield. That was when I pretended to see something weird on his side, working his focus to somewhere else, loosening his grip and I had scored again. “I think I am going to change my beta.” I said thoughtfully. “No, you aren’t. Where will you find such a hot beta like me? Nowhere!” He told me, looking earnestly in my eyes. “Don’t flatter yourself. Your looks even can’t disguise how bad you are at fighting,” I said, opening the door to my room. “You still love me, alpha,” He called out from outside. I rolled my eyes. The elders had already for their work before we, the university students, had to go out. The younger ones went to school a little later than us. Grant, Sebastian and a few others of the pack including me, sat down at the table. I felt so tired right now. “Alpha, will you be interested in going to a party tonight?” Roza, one of the girls at the table asked me. “I don’t think so. I have some work to finish up tonight.” I told her apologetically and her face fell. “That’s okay,” She said quietly, forking at her peas. “You can go, if you want to. Grant and Sebastian would be glad to take you.” I smiled when her face lit up. “But—“ Sebastian started to say. “You have to take her, Seba.” I told him sternly. I knew he wanted to stay with me, in case, I needed him. “Can we go too, alpha?” Alisha, another girl with bright red hair, asked excitedly. “All of you can go. Go and have fun,” I told them. The whole table, consisting of fifteen boys and girls, cheered and whooped, making me laugh. Sebastian and Grant grimaced looking at each other. They knew very well that they would have to be on babysitting duty of all the pack members who went to the party tonight. Everybody walked out to the SUV, excited about tonight’s party, deciding what they will wear and what kind of makeup would suit their dresses. The boys too, seemed excited, even though didn’t let it on. Their excitement made me feel happy and excited too. “Miss Hans, please take care of the pups. Don’t let them out on their own. I fear that the Night Spruce pack won’t let us off too easily.” I told our housekeeper, before leaving. “I will take care of it, Alpha,” She smiled warmly. Miss Hans has been here before I was even born. She was a woman of forty and yet she still hasn’t found her mate. That must be very depressing. I hope she finds him soon. She needed him. We rode to the university quietly, with a packed SUV. The humans and werewolves always stared at us whenever our car would arrive at the university gates. The humans probably looked because our girls and boys too handsome and beautiful to not attract attention and the werewolves stared because a girl alpha was not something you heard of quite often. That was something I had got used to, but today, the air felt different. Just as we got out, two cars came and stopped at the university gate and came out Damien with his pack members. A few of the human girls took in sharp breaths. Damien had never come to uni as long as I have been here. He along with a brown haired guy and the blond guy who I had met last night, and another girl were completely new here. They weren’t here before. “He is so hot. Who is he!” Roza whispered to Alisha. “Alpha of the Night Spruce pack,” I spoke in a quiet tone, I didn’t like how she talked about him. Whispers started to erupt from the girls and guys alike. Damien entered the gates with the blond haired guy and the brown haired guy by his side, who I assumed were his beta and delta. A girl clung to his arm. Beautiful was an understatement to how she looked—bright golden hair and baby blue eyes, a proper Barbie doll. I already hated her. Two more girls and boys emerged from behind them. Ha! Their number was smaller than ours. That fact made me smirk. For a fleeting second, Damien’s green eyes met mine. The whole world seemed to stand still for that moment. Celine and I fought for control. I needed to keep her down. Damien and his gang walked inside the building without giving us any more attention. I took in a deep breath. We started making our own way into the building. Classes were to start in a few minutes. “Are you okay?” Sebastian touched my arm. I smiled up at him and nodded my head. He knew I was lying but didn’t mention it. “Meet you at lunch,” I told him before making my way to my first class—Law. I have decided to pursue a career in law. I have always liked that fact of fighting for something that I believed in and being an attorney would give me that right. Just as I rounded the corner, I noticed Grant having been ganged by a few people. I wouldn’t have paid any heed to them, if I hadn’t noticed the brown haired guy who was with Damien. I had decided to name him porcupine. I guessed I would name him something until I get his real name. He looked much like a porcupine with the standing hair on his head. Porcupine was constantly riling up Grant and I couldn’t have him explode in the middle of the hall where we had humans around. The consequences would be horrendous. I walked up to them slowly. “Grant, I think you have a class to get to, so please go there.” I told him calmly. He looked at me and then back at Porcupine who was smirking with two other guys standing beside him. He looked a pure bred spawn of evil. Grant nodded his head and without another word, followed my orders. I was following him back when I heard the Porcupine speak, “Yeah wolfy, run! Your Alpha is a person with titties! You are allowed to be weak!” Porcupine laughed. Grant stood completely still beside me. Without another thought, I turned around and my fist connected straight to his nose. Porcupine’s head turned straight up. My hands fisted in his collar, pulling his face close to mine as I stared into his eyes. “Don’t. Ever. Disrespect. An. Alpha. Unless they allow you to.” I spat at his face. His nose was bleeding heavily, blood running down to his lips and he looked scared. Good. I pushed him back and walked away with Grant to my class. As lunch came around, word had already gone out and mostly everybody in uni knew about how Porcupine, the new guy, was punched by me. “You did that?” Sebastian asked surprised. He knew that I had never ever been violent with someone in my life, when we had been in school or in uni. “He disrespected me,” I directly said without a care in the world. As much as I wanted everyone to treat me indifferently in the pack and stop showing me that excessive respect and fear, I wanted to have respect as a simple human being. Porcupine had disrespected my leadership qualities and my position as an alpha because of my gender and I hated such people. We sat down at our usual table and the chattering began, which was mostly about Damien and his gang. It irritated me how much Roza and Alisha and June and Shaina were crushing on him. What if they knew about him being my mate? Maybe they wouldn’t have even thought about him but I didn’t have that option with me. “Come on girls, we are tired of listening about that guy. Talk about something else,” Grant interjected. “You wouldn’t understand how amazing Damien is! Austin and Shane, are oh so handsome, as well!” Alisha gushed in her high pitched tone. “Who are Shane and Austin, again?” Dustin, a guy from out table asked. He was among the quiet ones in our pack. He was on the line of someone who the humans called as ‘nerds’. “Austin is the beta and Shane is the delta. Shane is the one who alpha has punched today.” Roza explained. I smiled, looking down at my food. I had beaten up the delta. At that moment, Damien and his goons entered the cafeteria. The students turned silent, so silent that you would be able to hear the sound of a pin drop. Celine howled and whine for few seconds inside me, making me shift in my seat. His scent was driving us mad. He seemed to be searching for someone and then his eyes landed on me. I stared right back at him, though my breathing felt haggard. He was doing something to me. I felt like he smiled, but I couldn’t be sure for he moved and sat down at a table in the corner. The crowd started their usual chatter again. My eyes were constantly on his table, on him, on the b***h Barbie, who was clinging onto him like a Koala. I was twirling the fork in my hand, wanting to stab her eyes out. Celine and I were burning inside. Did Damien feel nothing for me? Did his wolf not recognize me? No! That was impossible. This simply can’t happen. Austin, his beta with blond hair, sat down beside him with Shane in tow. They had come in late. Shane concentrated on his food, while Austin was telling something to Damien. Have you ever felt like you have seen the sun from up close? At that moment, I knew I did for Damien smiled. Looking at me. I felt my throat tighten. He smiled at me. I think I am going to forever remember that curl of his lips upwards. I kept staring at him even when he looked away like he didn’t just turn my world upside down with a smile. I knew that Celine was bonkers for her wolf mate and I think, I am going on the same path as her. This wasn’t good. “Have you heard though, that that blond girl is probably the Luna of Damien’s pack?” June asked to no one in particular. My head snapped in her direction. Sebastian looked at me and then back at June. “June, what are you saying? That can’t be true. She doesn’t have his mark.” Sebastian said matter-of-factly. He reached across the table and held my hand like it was a normal thing to do. Nobody ever objected to us being so close. Everyone knew about out bond, so nobody gave us any weird stares. “Oh no, I am sure she is going to be the Luna. I have heard that Damien has been with her for five years now. That girl, Jessica, says it at every chance she gets,” June says munching on her chicken sandwich. My hands gripped onto Sebastian’s harder. This can’t be true. You have only one mate and the feeling is mutual from both sides. Always. Oh moon goddess, what kind of game are you playing with me! My eyes wandered to Damien’s table again. His eyes met mine and they hardened immediately like he hated me for something. Celine was in pain and she was tearing her heart apart along with mine. It didn’t sit well with us that the b***h Barbie, otherwise called, Jessica was Damien’s supposed Luna. What was I then? The bell rang indicating the end of lunch. Everyone chattered on about they didn’t want to go back to class and just wanted to go home and rest and have fun and go to the party. My beta slung his arm around my shoulder as we walked towards our lockers. “You know, I think June was misheard something. It can’t be that Damien is your mate and he doesn’t feel anything like that. That’s unheard of,” He said, pulling at my pony. The girls passing us looked at me with envy. They thought I was Sebastian’s girlfriend. If this happened when I was younger, I would have been utterly happy but now, I only felt like laughing. “You should date, Seba. The girls die for your attention and most of them hate me, because you are so close to me,” I laughed. “I don’t think I want to date anyone. I am waiting for my mate to turn up. I am saving everything for her.” He said. The thought made me smile. He was such a darling. Whoever will have him as a mate would surely be a very lucky girl. Pinching his cheek, I said, “That’s—“ That’s when the final bell rang. We quickly said our goodbyes and went to our classes. Mine was contemporary dancing. I went to class and quickly changed into my dancing clothes. Holding the bar at the side of the room, I started to stretch out my body like the other dancers. We nearly had an equal number of boys to make up for the girls this year. Last year I had to double up with two different guys so that everyone was able to get a chance. I always good at dancing; it came naturally to me. This was my relaxing chore ever since I was a girl so it was obvious to take it up in college too. It was also partially because of dancing that I was better at combat than others. “You reek of that dog,” A silky voice said from behind me. I couldn’t believe this was happening. I started to feel a little dizzy with the overwhelming scent. “To what do I owe the pleasure of having the mighty Alpha Damien talk to me?” I tried to act nonchalant but my knees shook beneath me. “Punching my delta was quite impressive out there. I feel like you are doing way too much to get my attention,” I could feel him breath down my neck. I wanted to lean back on him, but instead I turned around and to my embarrassment, I only ended up at chest level. That made me far less intimidating. “I am not acting in any way to get your attention. Your delta disrespected me and my delta,” I said sternly. I have never seen someone have such green eyes. It was the dark green of the trees mixed with the light green of new leaves. They were so beautiful. “Orabelle, can I partner up with you?” Andrew, one of the two guys that I had to double with last semester, asked. I tore my eyes away to look at him. “Yeah, sure. That will be great. Simon got another partner right? Hopefully, I won’t have to double this year.” I smiled. “He did find someone. So I guess it’s you and me for this year.” Andrew chuckled. “Glad to hear that,” I said, walking away with him. A hand pulled me back, making me stumble. “I am not done talking to you,” Damien looked at me with hard eyes. His hand, where it was gripping my wrist, sent flares shooting up through my arm. “Well, I am.” I shook him off and walked away. The next moment, Miss Margaret came into the room in all her poise. “Students, positions,” She shouted. Andrew and I fell back to the middle of the room, standing back to chest. My arms were crisscrossed over my chest loosely as Andrew held my hands from the back. Damien stood a little to the side of me with the blond b***h, Jessica, of course. I wasn’t surprised to see her here but I was certainly a little surprised to see Damien there. Maybe he was there to support his girlfriend. Girlfriend—that word burned my insides. “We will start with the same routine that we had done before. Girls come in first and do a twirl, shake your hips down to the floor and the boys come in and lift you. Rest of the routine, Ryan and I will show you.” Miss Margaret spoke in a hurry. Ryan was her dancing assistant. Both of them would show us moves and steps. I had heard dancers had great physique but Ryan was on some other level. He never wore any kind of upper shirt to cover his chest and most of the girls, including me, would swoon at how godly he was. “I wish we guys were lucky enough to see such a sight before us every day,” Andrew whispered in my ear as he looked at Miss Margaret and Ryan dance to the beats. “I don’t think Miss Margaret is as hot as Ryan. Damn, those abs!” I looked at Ryan’s muscles flexing with the exertion and his biceps lifting in perfect unison to the music. A low growl seemed to come from my side, making me snap my eyes to look beside me. Damien was looking down at the floor, his face held a frustrated look, while b***h Barbie stared at him in confusion, speaking softly to him. It only made me angrier as to how he was possessive of her, but not for me, his own mate. “Now, it’s your turn.” Miss Margaret wheezed at the end of the routine. Sweat had gathered on her forehead but the truly hot sight was Ryan’s chest as sweat glistened on him. How can someone look so perfect when they were so sticky and dirty? Another growl sounded in the room. This one was louder. The ones in my row and behind me started looking here and there for the source of it. I looked at a certain person and to be sure, he was the one who did it. His face told me so. Of course, Damien had probably smelt b***h Barbie’s arousal on seeing such a handsome man half naked in front of her. He will probably ban her from coming here next time. The music started and the girls started off with their parts first—doing twirls and splits and jumps before the guys came in, lifting us up and dancing with our arms joined. In the middle of the routine, every other couple had some mistake, in result of which Miss Margaret was shouting their ears off. Every other couple except ours and Damien’s. I couldn’t believe how great they were. We ended the routine in perfect unison. “That was great Damien and Jessica and Andrew and Orabelle! This is what I try to find in my class,” Miss Margaret gave a pointed look to the rest of the students who looked at their feet, pretending to be apologetic. The bell rang indicating the end of college for today. Thank god! I probably smelt like a rat in a gutter, with how much I was sweating. Andrew hugged me before leaving, waving at me as he walked off fast paced. I changed into my street shoes and put on a legging before standing up to leave. “You did great out there, Orabelle. Your lifts were perfectly organized.” Ryan said while stretching on the floor, as soon as I got out of the changing room. I was hyperventilating. This man was the only man that I had ever had a crush on and he compliments me. How great does that feel! “Thank you, Mr. Velinkov.” I said smiling. My cheeks hurt from smiling so wide. He chuckled—a deep and sexy chuckle. Damn it! “You don’t have to be so formal out of class. Call me Ryan. I am just probably a few years older than you are. Work on your jumps though. Even though they looked amazing, I could see you were putting a little too strain on your ankles.” He stood right in front of me now. He was still bare chest and it made it hard for me to actually look at his eyes instead of his chest. “I—I will ma—make sure of that.” I stuttered. He chuckled again, ruffling my hair before walking off to do whatever he was going to do. I sighed. I felt so contented right now. My head was so over the clouds that I hadn’t even seen Damien standing to the side. Just as I walked out of the door of the studio, he cornered me. His face hovered close to mine and his scent was burning my nose, making me feel even more lightheaded than I was. “Next time, control your arousal in there. The scent of your arousal was distracting me. Every other wolf in that room could probably smell it, alpha Orabelle.” He spat in my face. His eyes looked nearly black as his wolf fought for control. He pushed himself away and walked towards the exit. I gave out a shaky breath. I could feel aroused for anyone and I didn’t care if it distracted him or any other wolf. He didn’t have to be so angry about such a small thing. Just as I walked out, I heard shouts and screams and curses from the side of the college compound. It didn’t matter much, it was probably a fight the stud guys were having over their girlfriends. Out of curiosity still, I walked over and peered at who were fighting and to my dismay, it was Sebastian fighting with Austin and Shane, singlehanded. The three of them looked very close to shifting into their wolves. They were already on their hands and knees, growling like animals as the humans watched. Shane had a bloodied lip while Austin’s right eye was blackened. Sebastian looked a little better than them with just a blue mark on his cheek. Where were the wolf kids? Damn it! They should have stopped this. I pushed inside the crowd and stood directly in the middle of them, “Stop it! This instant! What are guys even thinking?” I shouted. I hadn’t realized but I had used my alpha voice, making the three of them stand up immediately bowing their heads to me. Sebastian looked pained. The alpha voice pained lower ranking wolves, especially the ones in my pack. I walked closer to Austin and Shane, speaking, “Ever since you came here, you are picking fights with us without any particular reason. If this is about that stupid deal, then stop it! It’s enough already!” My voice was quiet and low, menacing even. “You are weak and so is your pack. You are a joke in the name of an alpha! How dare you say no to our alpha! You don’t deserve to be one even!” Austin spoke in a voice of pure hatred. “I am capable of taking you two both at the same time. Don’t you dare call me weak! And I hope you haven’t forgot Shane how I broke you nose in the morning,” I said sweetly. Shane growled low in his throat. Instantly, Sebastian was by my side—ready to take in any action if needed, to protect me. “Never underestimate someone for being a girl! You will have far harder consequences to face if you don’t stop picking fights with us.” I said calmly. “This is not over,” Austin said, looking back up at Sebastian. They were having a stare down. “Yes, it is.” I glared at him, before pulling Sebastian off the field. I really needed to go for a run. All of this was making Celine way too agitated.
