The house had finally settled into silence.
One by one, the lights downstairs had disappeared, taking with them the last traces of the family's laughter and conversation. Eve could still hear echoes of it in her mind as she sat before the dressing table, slowly brushing her hair.
She was still smiling.
It had been a good evening. Better than she had expected. Somehow, she had spent an entire evening surrounded by Alex's family without once feeling like an outsider.
She caught her own reflection in the mirror and shook her head faintly. A week ago, she hadn't known any of them. Now she had a mother-in-law who cried over her, a father-in-law who called her "family," and a grandfather-in-law who had told her she could call him Grandpa.
And she had a husband who looked at her like she was the only thing in the room worth seeing.
The bathroom door opened behind her.
Eve looked up.
Alex stood in the doorway, freshly showered, wearing nothing but the towel wrapped around his waist. His damp hair fell across his forehead, and a drop of water glistened briefly at the hollow of his throat before disappearing along the line of his chest.
Her hand stopped halfway through a stroke of the brush.
She looked at him.
Then, despite herself, her gaze travelled slowly downward.
There was something unfair about a man who could look like that after an ordinary shower. Especially when she knew exactly what it felt like to have those arms around her. To have his hands on her skin. To have his mouth explore every inch of her body.
The memory of last night came rushing back—the way they had come together with an urgency that had surprised them both. The way his hands had gripped her hips, pulling her closer, as if he couldn't get enough of her. The way she had arched beneath him, matching his rhythm, needing him in a way she had never needed anyone.
Heat stirred low in her stomach. Her pulse quickened.
She could feel the desire burning inside her, rising with each memory. The way his breath had caught when she touched him. The way he had whispered her name against her skin, desperate and reverent.
She could sense that they would never have enough of each other. That whatever this was between them, it was insatiable.
If he kept standing there looking like that, she was going to forget every sensible thought she'd had about getting ready for bed.
Alex met her gaze in the mirror.
He had been watching her. Watching the way her eyes had traveled over him, the way her breath had caught. He could see the desire flickering in her expression, the heat that had risen beneath her skin.
And he felt it too.
The memory of last night was still fresh in his mind—the softness of her skin beneath his hands, the way she had cried out his name, the way she had pulled him closer when he thought he couldn't possibly go any deeper. The way she had looked at him afterward, her eyes dark with satisfaction, her lips swollen from his kisses.
He wanted her again. Now. The urgency of it burned beneath his skin like something he couldn't control.
His mouth curved into a slow smile as he crossed to stand behind her, close enough that she could feel the warmth of his body before he touched her.
Eve continued brushing her hair, though she was suddenly far too aware of him standing there. The heat radiating from his body. The scent of him—soap and something warmer, something that was purely Alex.
His eyes met hers in the mirror.
"I think you slipped into my family's world as though you had always belonged there."
Eve's expression softened. "They were wonderful."
"They were impressed with you."
"Your mother made that very clear."
A slow smile touched his mouth. "Not just my mother."
Eve looked at him. "No?"
He leaned closer, his mouth near her ear. "Everyone was impressed with my beautiful wife."
The words sent a small warmth through her. "You're enjoying saying that."
"I am."
She turned slightly on the stool. "I think I'm enjoying hearing it."
Something changed in his expression. The teasing warmth remained, but beneath it was something darker. Hungrier.
Alex bent and pressed a kiss to the side of her neck.
Eve's breath caught.
His lips lingered against her skin before moving slowly along the curve of her neck. The tenderness of it made her close her eyes.
"Alex..."
He smiled against her skin. "Yes?"
"You're distracting me."
"That was the intention."
His mouth found the place beneath her ear, and a shiver travelled through her. Then his hands moved to the straps of her nightgown, pushing them gently down her shoulders. The fabric slipped, exposing the curve of her breasts.
"Stand up," he murmured against her skin.
She rose on unsteady legs. He turned her to face him, his hands finding the edge of her nightgown at her hips. Slowly, deliberately, he pushed the fabric down, letting it fall in a soft pool at her feet.
She stood before him, bare and trembling.
His eyes moved over her, dark with desire. Then his hands cupped her breasts, his thumbs brushing across her n*****s.
Eve gasped, her knees weakening. She leaned into him, her hands gripping his shoulders for support.
Alex looked into her eyes, amused by the different emotions playing across her face—surprise, desire, need. He kissed her softly, his lips warm and gentle against hers.
Then his arms wrapped around her waist, lifting her off her feet.
Eve's fingers found the edge of his towel and pulled. It dropped to the floor, and she felt the warmth of his body against hers, skin to skin.
She wanted him. Not just his hands, not just his mouth—all of him. The wanting was a physical thing, pressing against her ribs, making it hard to think.
Alex carried her to the bed, lowering her onto the mattress. He stood over her for a moment, his eyes moving slowly over her body—the curve of her hips, the swell of her breasts, the way she lay open and waiting for him.
"You're so beautiful," he breathed.
Then he lowered himself onto her, his mouth finding hers. His hands moved over her body—cupping her breasts, sliding down her stomach, tracing the curve of her hip. He knew her body now. He knew where she liked to be touched, where she was sensitive, where she wanted more.
She could feel his desire pressing against her thigh, hot and insistent. Her body ached for him, ready and wanting.
His fingers found her heat, sliding through her wetness. She gasped against his mouth, her body arching toward him in shock and pleasure.
Then his fingers found her, sliding inside.
Eve cried out, but Alex covered her mouth with his, swallowing the sound. His fingers moved inside her, slow and deep, while his thumb circled her in a rhythm that made her forget how to breathe.
She broke the kiss, gasping against his cheek. "Alex..."
"I know," he whispered. "I know."
She could feel herself rising, the pressure building with each movement of his hand. Her fingers dug into his shoulders, her nails pressing into his skin.
"Please," she breathed. "Please."
He pulled his hand away, and she whimpered at the loss. But then he positioned himself above her, his eyes meeting hers.
"Look at me," he said.
She did.
He entered her slowly, watching her face as he filled her. Her breath caught, her body stretching to accommodate him.
"Eve."
His voice was rough, barely a whisper. He moved inside her, slow at first, then faster as their rhythm found each other.
She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper, and he groaned against her neck.
He kissed her, pouring everything he couldn't yet say into the touch of his lips against hers. There would be time for words tomorrow. There would be time for declarations. But tonight, this was enough.
They moved together, lost in each other, until the pressure built and broke, and she cried out his name, her body arching beneath him.
He followed her over the edge, his voice breaking as he whispered her name against her skin.
Sometime later, they lay tangled together in the quiet darkness.
The fire had burned low, casting long shadows across the ceiling. Eve's head rested on Alex's chest, his arm wrapped around her, his fingers tracing idle patterns on her shoulder.
She could hear the steady rhythm of his heart beneath her ear, feel the rise and fall of his breath. The warmth of him was solid and real, a comfort she hadn't known she was searching for.
"What did you and Grandpa talk about?" he asked quietly.
She was still for a moment. She could tell him the truth. She could tell him about Edward's first love, about the carousel, about the ring. But something held her back. She needed to know first. She needed to be sure.
"He told me about someone he loved when he was young," she said carefully. "Someone he lost."
Alex was quiet. "He doesn't talk about that often."
"I know. I think he needed to."
"And you listened."
She nodded against his chest. "I listened."
He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "That's what he needed. Someone to listen."
She closed her eyes, letting his warmth settle around her.
"Alex?"
"Mm?"
"Thank you. For tonight. For your family. For all of it."
He smiled against her hair. "You don't have to thank me."
"I know. But I want to."
He rolled onto his side, pulling her with him so they were face to face. The dying firelight caught his eyes, warm and soft.
For a long moment, he just looked at her. His hand came up to touch her face, his thumb tracing the line of her cheekbone. There was something in his expression she couldn't quite name—something deeper than desire, something quieter than happiness.
"Eve." His voice was quiet. "I don't know what I did to deserve you."
She reached up and touched his face, her thumb brushing across his cheek. "You don't have to deserve me. You just have to be you."
He kissed her then—slow and sweet, full of everything he hadn't said. When he pulled back, his forehead rested against hers.
"I'm falling in love with you," he whispered.
The words landed somewhere deep in her chest, warm and certain.
"I know," she said softly. "I'm falling in love with you too."
He kissed her again, softer this time, and she felt the truth of the words settle between them like something that had finally found its home.
They lay in the quiet, the fire crackling softly, the night settling around them like something familiar.
Eve thought about the ring on her finger. About Edward. About the woman he had loved and lost.
She thought about the questions she needed to ask.
But for now, here in the warmth of Alex's arms, she let herself be still.
Tomorrow, she would call her grandmother. Tomorrow, she would ask the questions that had been forming in her mind all night.
And tomorrow, she knew, there would be more words between her and Alex. Words that were waiting to be spoken. Words that would change everything.
But tonight, she was exactly where she was supposed to be.
She fell asleep to the sound of his breathing, the steady rhythm of his heart beneath her ear, and the quiet certainty that she had found something rare.
Something real.
Something that was only just beginning.
