1082 Words
It was Saturday morning which was weekend. No one went to work today. Mary was still sleeping, yesterday had been really stressful for her. She had two court adjournment on the same day. Meanwhile Sandra was in her room speaking to her boyfriend on the phone. Jake was a Accountant, he worked for Areos Corporation , one of the leading company in the the US. " Buh Babe I really miss you" Sandra blushed. " I do too , buh I have to stay in Nigeria for a while. It's just for a few months " She sighed. " Buh, Babe what's your reason for going to Nigeria. Couldn't your parents go alone " "Jakey boo, I know you miss me, buh my parents.... Arghh! You know my brother and his wife are having issues. Gosh, I hate that woman. " That woman just finds a way to make me angry. She's the reason why we're here. My parents wants to kick her out" " Isn't that too much" Jake asked nervously. " Really! Jake, Really! That good for nothing i***t, deserve what comes her way" She said as she smashed her fist on the drawer beside her. " I'm sorry. Babe you need to calm down . Buh I don't really get why you guys hate her. " Jake please! Don't let her be the subject of discussion. So, how are you doing? " " I've been stressed lately" He sighed tiredly. They continued chatting on the phone . The sudden shout pierced the quiet like a blade, yanking Mary from the tangled depths of sleep. Her eyes flew open, wide and disoriented, blinking against the pale light filtering through the window. Heart thudding in her chest, she jolted upright, breath catching as adrenaline surged through his veins. For a moment, she couldn’t tell if it had been part of a dream or real. Mr. Adedeji was downstairs shouting. " Where's that good for nothing woman . Look at the time isn't she supposed to do her duties" Mabel ran to him. " Good morning sir. Is anything the matter?" " Yes! Where's Mary? " He turned to her. " Umm... Sir She's still sleeping. She..." He interrupted her " She what. How can a married woman be sleeping by this time. This is nonsense, absolutely nonsense. " The shout echoed through the house, sharp and urgent, slicing through the stillness. Michael came down after hearing his shout. " What is this about Dad?" He asked annoyingly. " Where's your so called wife?" " Dad what's wrong? " He wasn't surprised , cause this wasn't the first time he's Dad exaggerated over Mary. " Your wife is still sleeping by this time. She hasn't clean the house or cook any food." " It's not like you're going to eat what I cook " She was still in her pajamas. They all turned to look at her. " How dare you?" He looked angry " Do you know who I am ? " He pointed at her. " And do you know who I am" She paused for a second and continued." I am nobody's maid . " He looked at Michael, who was confused by the two's behavior. " Can you see how your wife is talking back at me. You have no home training. " " Look, Sir with all due respect, please don't insult my background. We have helpers around the house, if you need something why not call them instead of bringing down the house" She said in anger. " Mary! " Michael yelled " What's wrong with you? At least have a bit of respect for my father." She stared at him, lips slightly parted in disbelief, then slowly pressed them into a thin, tight line. Her eyes narrowed, the kind of squint that spoke louder than words, filled with contempt and a flicker of restrained anger. A bitter laugh nearly escaped her, but she held it in, choosing instead to tilt her head slightly , not in curiosity, but in that sharp, sarcastic way. " Are you serious right now" Her nose wrinkled just a little, as though the very sight of him offended her. The silence between them grew heavy, but she didn’t bother to explain herself. She just gave him one last glare cold, cutting, and laced with disgust before turning away, jaw clenched, shoulders stiff with silent fury. She looked at Mr. Adedeji and gave him a smirk before leaving for her room. " I'm so sorry Father" Michael apologized. " Sorry won't change anything . Divorce this woman. End things with her" He moved forward to him and kept his hand on his shoulder . The words landed hard, not shouted, not argued just cold and final. But the he didn’t move. He stood there, eyes fixed on the floor, as if hearing something he’d known was coming, yet hoped never would. He didn't speak, not right away. His throat tightened. " Dad! " He sighed. " This is what's best for you, for our family. I need a grandchild" His face was expressionless. " You need an heir." " Dad , can we not talk about this right now. " " I've given you the best advice I can give you as a father. Because with the way things are going you'll never have a child. " He tapped his shoulder and left. Michael just stood there. There were different thoughts in his head. He was confused and didn't know what to do. Mabel ran to him. She had been watching him across the room , the way he stared into nothing " Michael, are you okay?" She said softly . Her voice was laced with concern, not pushy but with concern. " I'm fine" He replied. " Why can't you and Mary just make up? Why can't you go back to the way things use to be?" She was sad. " Mabel things can always be the same" He said as he tried to fake a smile. " It can. I miss the way things use to be. I miss how you two play, how you can do without each other." She got down in tears. He turned his eyes away for a moment, jaw clenched, trying to swallow the lump in his throat. He opened his mouth to speak , but the words caught. Because somehow,he didn't know what to say. He told her all would be fine and left
