Chapter 5: You're Breaking Me

1917 Words
Everyone was left in complete shock with Olivia’s big confession. Stephen was left there having a battle with his thoughts. While walking back to the house, he only had two things on his mind. She was almost a mother? She was almost married? “Stephen, a word in the kitchen please.” Ordered Lea calmly when Stephen entered the house. “I have to get Dani home.” He knew what was going to happen so he tried to avoid it. “Our guest can go home by herself. Follow me.” She went to the kitchen and was followed by her brother. “What the heck was that. You saw what Dani said and yet you defended her. Stephen, Olivia isn’t any girl. She’s my friend and is carrying my child, YOUR nephew or niece.” She spat out angrily. “I know, Lea. I know.” He answered not completely focused. “But I can’t let her into my life more than this.” He spoke again. “Why?” Lea looked confused. “Because I kissed her.” He replied. “What? When?” she looked even more confused. “The day she said she was pregnant. It made me see her differently, it surfaced feelings I never thought I had for her, and the day of the ultrasound a month ago I was sure that I was feeling something for her, and I couldn’t do it. So, we both agreed on being co-workers and nothing more. I also told her that I was going to become this cold person with her. When she said she was too damaged I was confused but now… now I understand and I realized we both built walls so high it’s too hard to admit our feelings.” Stephen confessed everything to his sister. “Stephen, I don’t know why you two are doing this to each other but no 'wall' is too high or too strong when it comes to love.” She explained. “If you really want her, go get her.” She proceeded. “I’m a disaster. I would hurt her, break her more than she’s already broken. I’m sorry Lea… I have to go.” Stephen left the room after he finished his sentence.   During the next few weeks, Olivia and Stephen did not cross paths at all. Olivia did everything with Lea and she was grateful her friend understood their situation. Today, Stephen had to give Olivia the reports he gathered during that month, and usually, he would send his secretary however, he forgot that she wasn’t there today as she asked for a day off. Stephen looked at the files on his desk thinking if he should go there himself or wait for tomorrow for his secretary to come back and deliver them herself. He also knew that they agreed that their personal problems would not interfere with their jobs so, he took the files and went.   “Come in,” Olivia said upon hearing the knock on the door. “Here are the files you asked for.” He placed them on her desk without looking at her and was about to leave the room. “No secretary today it seems,” Olivia whispered not realizing it wasn’t low enough for him not to hear. Stephen stopped right there and he was facing her. He stood there waiting for her to look back at him as she didn’t gaze at him either. She stopped typing after understanding what he wanted and looked at him. “What?” she said seriously. “You think this is easy? Staying away from you? You seriously think it that easy?” he approached her desk. “Stephen, I don’t give a damn if you’re speaking to me or not.” She stood up. “All I was asking for was an apology. Not even a speech, just five letters would’ve been enough. ‘Sorry’ from you not on the behalf of Dani, would’ve been enough but you were too busy screwing that b***h and now you’re telling me it's not easy?” Her voice was a little higher than usual. “I don’t care if it's hard for you. I don’t care if you’re with Demi, Deni, or whatever her name is. I care that you didn’t bother or have the courtesy of apologizing for something you started.” She lumped in her throat and didn’t know how she is still standing. "You wanted as much as I did." He said not accepting her accusations. "You kissed me. You did..." she told him. Stephen turned his eyes away feeling guilty. “Sorry.” He said with a low voice. “It’s too late.” She refused his words. “Not for what happened during dinner. For disappointing you.” He shook his head meeting her eyes and after that, he left the room quickly. Olivia fell on the chair and had a big breath like she was relieved. Sad but relieved.  -Stephen’s P.O.V- When I closed that door, I knew deep inside that it was over. Every chance we had of everything going back to normal was over. That thought was probably the reason for all my mistakes afterward. “Dani? Yes hi. Are you home?”   -Olivia’s P.O.V-   It’s been three days since that little scene Stephen and I had and today Lea asked me to join her for lunch. “So, how’s everything been in the past few days. I know we agreed that we won’t bring this up but he’s my brother too and I always want what’s best for him.” Lea asked taking a sip of her drink. “I don’t know. Of course, were still avoiding each other and haven’t spoken yet.” I sighed. “Honey, I don’t get it. You both clearly have feelings for each other. Then why don’t you act based on them rather than act like high schoolers.” She asked confused. “It’s easy for you to say. Your husband is actually your high school sweetheart.” I chuckled. “Hey, we might be happy now but we had our fair share of fights back in the day too. Look where they got us. We’re having a child now.” She continued. “Lea, it’s not that easy. Everything in my life was planned out and I was happy and then in a couple of hours, in 24 hours… I lost everything. I buried my everything.” I hated these memories that are deeply engraved in my brain. “Your brother and I might have something for each other but acing on that something can hurt us both. Lea, I can’t be hurt the same way I was four years ago.” I continued and shook my head. Lea just sat there and I knew she was sad. I knew she wished she could do something but she also knew that it was best to close the door on that topic and melt its key.   When I arrived home, an unexpected guest was waiting for me on my doorstep. “Dani, how do you know where I live?” I asked. “Listen, I know you and Stephen have something going on. Had…actually. Now I know it’s over and I wanted to say thank you.” She had this bitchy expression on her face. “And how did you come to that conclusion?” I wanted to know “He came to my house three days ago and we had a … moment.” She winked. “Just because he slept with you doesn’t mean he wants you,” I said. “Oh no no no honey, we didn’t sleep together. Well, we did but… he kissed me.” She whispered her last words. “So?” “Sweety, Stephen Malcolm never kissed a girl his entire life. After his mother’s death, he decided not to ever get involved with any girl. That did not work so, he didn’t kiss anyone because kissing was deep and involved emotions. So, thank you for making him forget about you and want me instead.” What she said made my heart beat faster. “Leave.” I gritted “With pleasure.” She smiled Did I take Stephen’s first kiss?   -Stephen’s P.O.V- I was alone in my house thinking of the girl that wrecked my whole world and completely shattered my promise to not have feelings for anyone that could take my mother's place in my heart. I heard my doorbell and hoped it wasn’t Dani because she was really starting to annoy me after she believed she’s special since I kissed her. “You kissed her?” she pushed me inside. “You kissed her you son of a b***h?” she pushed me harder. “You even slept with her? You gave me your first kiss without letting me know how special it was to you and then you kissed HER?” It was the first time I saw Olivia’s tears fall this much and it made me weak. It made me weak because I was the reason she was sad. Because I knew how she made me cave and I still didn’t let her in nor did she. “I let you make me feel things I promised myself I will never feel again and you end up calling it all a mistake.” She pushed me again and I didn’t do anything I just let her. “You and I are impossible. We are never going to go back to what we were and we will never be together. We are... impossible. We are damaged. A part of me hoped... it hoped for something ANYTHING.” Her tears were falling and with each drop, my heart sank deeper. “I shouldn’t have come here.” She shook her head. And turned to leave. I had to let her go. My feelings for her were clear to me. No girl ever made my heart sink as deep as these couple of tears did and I knew, I knew I had to let her go but it sucks. It sucks to know that you need to let go, but you can’t because you’re still hoping for that impossible to happen. She left.  ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— What will Stephen do? Will he go after Olivia? Will they confess their feelings? Continue reading to find out.
