Chapter 7: Remember Me

2501 Words
I left Stephen’s room and Lea was looking at me waiting for me to tell her if everything was like we’d hoped. When I shook my head signaling that her brother didn’t remember me, she hugged me tightly reassuring me that everything was going to be fine. “It’s fine. The doctor told him he has a fifty percent chance to remember everything again.” She wiped my tears. I nodded. “My Stephy. How is he?” I heard a familiar voice and after matching the voice to the partner I couldn’t help but cringe. What the hell is she doing here. “What are you doing here, Dani?” I asked her annoyed. “Oh, look who’s here the pregnant lady that made Stephy break up with me.” She said mockingly. “It’s Stephen. And she’s not just a pregnant lady.” Lea tried defending me. “Whatever. I want to see him.” She pushed us aside and entered his room. Lea tried stopping her but she couldn’t so we followed her inside to see what she's going to do or what load of crap she's going to feed Stephen. “Oh, baby. Are you hurt?” she hugged Stephen. “You’re pressing on the wounds.” He closed his eyes. “Baby, did they hurt you?” She asked. “Who hurt him?” I asked her confused. She looked at me for a while before answering. “I heard he was in an accident. Did it hurt him?” she saved herself from further speculations, but I would be dumb not to doubt her. She said 'they' not 'it'. “If I wasn’t hurt, I wouldn’t be here.” He chuckled. “By the way, who are you?” the injured man asked. “I’m your girlfriend.” She answered directly. “No, you’re not.” I changed her words. Dani looked at me with a death stare like she was going to kill me. Well, I don’t care she can happily do it after this baby is born. “Ladies, I really need to sleep. Sorry if I don’t remember the two of you.” Stephen stopped a possible fight between me and that b***h. I was sad that Stephen didn't know who I was, but I stopped caring about that the moment Dani arrived. This woman could fool the guy any day, he barely knew anything at this point. And I will definitely not let her take advantage of his current state.   We left his room and let him rest. Dani said she is going to go talk to the doctors but I didn’t trust her. ‘What’s wrong?” Lea asked. “I don’t know. When Stephen told her he didn’t remember her, she wasn’t surprised nor sad. She also said ‘Did they hurt you’. Who hurt him? The police said the driver that hit him wasn’t found.” I was looking at the room’s door worried about Stephen being a target and not just an accident that put him there. “You think she’s the reason he’s there? Oli, that girl can barely say his name right. I don’t think she’s smart enough to put a guy on a hospital bed.” Lea replied with a confused face. I didn’t know what to think. I just wanted to go back in time and tell him I love him. Maybe then, he would change his mind and not want us to remain just co-workers, he could've stayed with me rather than leaving in a rush a get hit.   The next week, Stephen was discharged from the hospital and was taken back to his condo. “Okay, Mark and I need to head out for a little bit and go to the police station to hand in your information. You’ll be just fine with Oli.” Lea said after helping him lay on his bed. I was busy rearranging the stuff we got him to make it through his week in the hospital and I didn’t notice that he was looking at me. “Olivia? Right?” He asked. He asked about the name. Like the first time, we started working together and it hurt my heart knowing he doesn’t remember me. “Yes,” I whispered and nodded. “Lea told me you’re her surrogate.” He was smiling. “Can I- touch your belly?” He seemed hesitant. Since when is Stephen so considerate and sweet. I sat on the bed facing him and put his hands on my baby bump since he was obviously too exhausted to even raise them. He smiled and I did too looking at him. He might’ve changed a little but the way he looked at his soon to be nephew or niece was still the same. “How many months pregnant are you?” He looked at me his hands still in mine. “Almost four months,” I answered. “So soon we'll get to know if it’s a boy or a girl.” His smile grew. “And how long have we known each other?” He asked me a question I never wanted to answer. It hurts to know that we loved each other but it all went down the drain because we lost our time being too held up on our past. “Four years.” I let his hands go. That simple action must've seemed big because Stephen realized the awkwardness and sadness on my face. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to hurt you.” He looked concerned. “No, it’s not your fault. Tell me what else do you want to know?” I looked at him again. “Is that girl…Dani…my girlfriend?” he asked. “No. She was kind of. But you two broke up a month before your accident.” I was about to laugh remembering how stupid Stephen was for choosing this girl. “Why did we break up? Was it because she calls me Stephy?” He and I laughed. You broke up because you love me…I wish I could say that. “Because she was annoying and a gold digger,” I answered him with an alternative answer. “I have to start looking for a genuine girl. I’m done with my player life.” He sighed. “Anyway, what else can I know about you? Where do you work?” he looked at me again. “I actually work at Malcolm Industries. I’m a sales manager there.” I answered with a smiling face. “Oh, so we’ll be working together more.” He said as if he were asking me. “Yes, but you’re going to be working from home,” I told him “To hell with it, I’m done with staying in bed all day.” He tried to throw the blanket away. “Don’t worry the more you rest the faster you get to go to the company.” I straightened the blanket and laughed. “It’s not a couple of wounds that are going to stop me you know.” He informed me. “No, it’s you losing your memory,” I whispered hoping he didn’t hear me. He looked at me and clenched his jaw. “Who are you? Really.” He said with a straight face. I looked at him with a blank face not knowing what to tell him. ‘The girl you loved but refused to be with?’ ‘The stupid girl that let you go?’ or ‘The one that really wants to kiss you right now but can’t because she’s a stranger to you.’ We were still looking at each other when I noticed one of his wounds bleeding again. “I have to change your band-aids,” I whispered and went to get the first aid kit. When I took all the things I needed, I went back to his bed and undressed the part where he was bleeding. It wasn’t a severe one just a cut, however, it needed to be cleaned until it healed properly. I was dabbing the antibiotic on it after rinsing it with water when I heard him hiss from the pain. I don’t know what happened to me but I dropped the cloth and put one of my hands on his cheek trying to calm him down. “Are you okay?” I asked worriedly. He nodded looking at me. I realized that my hand was on his face and I took it back really fast. “I’m sorry” I didn’t look at him and just continued doing what I had started already. After I was done, I was going to go throw all the bloody clothes and his old band-aid but he caught my hand and pulled me to him. Our faces were so close to each other and we were staring at each other like we were reading each other. “You’re really familiar. More than just a co-worker.” He whispered. I clenched my jaw. “We do get involved with the wrong people sometimes, right?” my voice almost didn’t come out. I gulped and stood up from his bed and headed to the door. “Where are you going?” He asked me when he saw that I wasn’t next to him anymore. “I can’t restart. I thought I could but I can’t go back to zero and act like nothing ever happened. I’m sorry, I’ll go call Lea and tell her I’m leaving.” I was basically outside the room by the time I finished what I was saying and left.   On Monday, my sister and her girlfriend were here to visit me so they came to the company. “Soo, how’s the pregnancy going?” Emma asked “It’s good actually. We have a doctor’s appointment next week to find out the gender of the baby.” I answered my sister. “That’s great.” She said. “Aren’t you going to tell her?” Her girlfriend whispered. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “Oli, Evelyn, and I…We’re getting married.” She was hesitant for a while then they both showed me their engagement rings. When I heard the news, I was so surprised yet so happy for them so I got up and hugged them both and congratulated them. “Aren’t you sad?” Emma asked “Why would I be sad?” I asked confused a little. “Well, you and Tommy were engaged and-” she almost whispered. “Em’ Tommy and I are two other people. Why wouldn’t I be happy for you?” I laughed. “Besides, there’s someone new,” I told them. Just as Evelyn was about to say something Stephen came in. “Who is Tommy?” he asked smiling. “What are you doing here?” I was surprised to see him here. “I’m working?” He came in and greeted my sister and her future wife. “Yeah but you’re still recovering. You shouldn’t be here, go home.” I got up and stood in front of him. “I’m the CEO. I think one of the requirements of this job is actually being here.” He put his hands in his pocket and looked at me. “Okay but you’re still injured and should go home. I’ll inform you about all the things that are happening.” I told him both my sister and Evelyn still looking at us. “Alright at what time will you come by?” he asked walking toward the door. “After work,” I answered. He nodded and closed the door behind him then I sat in my seat. I looked up to find my sister and her fiancé looking at me like they were waiting for something. “What?” I said a part of me knowing what they are actually waiting for. “What? Seriously?” Emma crossed her arms with one eyebrow higher than the other. “Is he your ‘someone new’? The CEO?” Evelyn spoke right after. “What, no” a lie. “Olivia, we’re not blind you know. I might be 5 years younger than you but I wasn’t born yesterday.” Emma was right. “Okay, fine. Yes, he’s my someone new- “They were already smiling. “-But nothing is going to happen between us.” I cut them off before they got too excited. Both their shoulders fell. “Why?” they asked in unison. “Let’s just say…memories.” I turned to my computer. “Memories? What do you mean?” Emma asked. “Emma, it’s just what it is. He needs to remember a couple of things if this is ever going to go forward.” I kind of told her the real reason. They just looked at each other. It was true though. It’s been years since I let a man into my heart and this man doesn’t know me. Not anymore at least. I can’t tell him that we love each other suddenly when the man doesn’t even know how he woke up in a hospital bed. However, I know one thing, and it’s that I will find out who did this to him. ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— Stephen is a target? Who wants him gone? Will Olivia’s heart get broken because of this? Keep reading to find out. Don’t forget to like the story for more. Stay safe. XOXO
