Malikye’s POV
The moment I stepped inside the Silver Temple, the air changed.
Not in the subtle, unsettling way the Veilwood had shifted around us.
This was immediate.
Powerful.
Alive.
It felt like walking into something ancient that had been waiting—watching—for far longer than I could comprehend. The air hummed with energy, low and constant, vibrating through my chest, syncing with the steady pulse of the mark in my palm.
The space inside was vast.
Far larger than the exterior had suggested.
Tall pillars lined the interior, stretching upward into shadow, their surfaces etched with glowing silver symbols that moved faintly, like they were breathing. The floor beneath my feet was smooth stone, cool and polished, reflecting the light in soft waves that rippled outward with each step I took.
I stopped.
Not because I had to.
Because something in me told me to.
“Well,” I said slowly, glancing around. “This is… impressive.”
Lyra stepped in behind me, her eyes sweeping the room, her posture alert despite the beauty surrounding us.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Lyra said, her voice quieter now, as if speaking too loudly might disturb something sacred.
“That makes two of us,” I replied.
Kael entered next, his gaze sharp, scanning every shadow, every corner, every possible threat.
“Stay focused,” Kael said, his tone grounded, cutting through the moment.
“I am focused,” I said, gesturing vaguely around us. “I’m focusing on not touching anything that might explode.”
Selene stepped inside last.
The moment she crossed the threshold, the symbols on the pillars flared brighter.
She exhaled softly.
“It recognizes us,” Selene said, her voice carrying something deeper—reverence, maybe even relief.
“That’s reassuring,” I said. “Unless recognizing us means it plans to test us again.”
Selene gave me a knowing look.
“It does,” Selene said.
I sighed.
“Of course it does.”
We moved further inside.
The temple seemed endless, each step revealing more of its structure—arches carved with lunar symbols, walls that shimmered faintly like liquid silver, and at the center of it all…
A raised platform.
Circular.
Surrounded by faint glowing lines that formed intricate patterns across the floor.
The moment my eyes landed on it—
The mark in my palm flared.
Bright.
Hot.
I winced slightly.
“That’s new,” I muttered.
Kael noticed immediately.
“It’s reacting,” Kael said.
“Yes,” I replied. “I’ve noticed.”
Selene stepped closer to the platform, her gaze fixed on the symbols.
“This is where it begins,” Selene said.
“That sounds ominous,” I said.
“It is necessary,” she replied.
Lyra crossed her arms, studying the platform.
“What exactly happens here?” Lyra asked.
Selene didn’t look away from the markings.
“He learns,” Selene said.
I frowned.
“That’s vague.”
“You learn control,” she clarified.
I exhaled slowly.
“That feels like something I should have started years ago.”
“Perhaps,” Kael said.
“Very helpful,” I muttered.
I stepped closer.
The moment my foot touched the edge of the platform—
The symbols ignited.
Silver light surged outward in a perfect circle, climbing up the pillars, spreading across the walls, flooding the entire space with a glow so bright it forced me to shield my eyes.
“Okay,” I said, squinting. “That seems excessive.”
The light intensified.
Then—
The doors behind us slammed shut.
Hard.
The sound echoed through the temple like thunder.
I spun around.
“That’s not good,” I said.
Lyra moved immediately, her hand dropping to her blade.
“Did anyone else not like that?” Lyra asked.
“I definitely didn’t,” I replied.
Kael stepped back toward the entrance, testing the doors.
They didn’t move.
“We’re sealed in,” Kael said.
“Of course we are,” I said.
Selene didn’t look concerned.
“This is part of the trial,” Selene said.
I turned back to her.
“Everything is part of the trial.”
“Yes,” she said simply.
I rubbed my face.
“I’m starting to feel personally attacked by this temple.”
The light shifted.
The symbols on the platform pulsed again.
Then—
Something moved.
At first, I thought it was just the light playing tricks.
Then the shadows gathered.
Pulled together.
Forming shapes.
Figures.
My stomach dropped.
“Oh no.”
Lyra stepped forward.
“What is that?” Lyra asked.
The shapes solidified.
Not Hollow.
Not exactly.
But similar.
More controlled.
More defined.
Their forms were made of silver and shadow intertwined, their eyes glowing faintly as they turned toward us.
Guardians.
“Those are not friendly,” I said.
“No,” Kael said.
“They’re definitely not friendly,” I added.
The nearest one stepped forward.
Its voice echoed, layered and distant.
“Prove your worth.”
I stared at it.
“I feel like we’ve been doing that all night.”
It didn’t respond.
Instead—
It attacked.
Fast.
Faster than the Hollow.
The guardian lunged forward, its form shifting as it moved, blade-like limbs extending toward me.
Kael intercepted instantly.
Steel met energy with a sharp crack as his blade clashed against the guardian’s form.
It didn’t break.
It adapted.
The guardian twisted, its arm reshaping into a sharp edge that struck toward Kael’s side.
He dodged, but barely.
“Less talking, more moving,” Kael said.
“I was already moving,” I replied, stepping back as another guardian turned toward me.
Lyra engaged the second one, her movements sharp and aggressive, her blade slicing through the air with precision.
Selene raised her hands.
Silver light flared around her.
“Malikye,” Selene said, her voice firm. “Use your power.”
“I am trying,” I said, dodging a strike that came far too close for comfort.
The guardian advanced again.
Its movements weren’t wild.
They were calculated.
Precise.
I raised my hand.
The mark flared.
The power surged.
But this time—
I didn’t panic.
I focused.
The light responded.
Not violently.
Not uncontrollably.
I pushed forward.
Silver energy burst from my palm, slamming into the guardian.
It staggered.
But didn’t fall.
“Okay,” I said. “That’s new.”
The guardian adjusted.
Then attacked again.
Kael moved to my side.
“Again,” Kael said.
“I heard you the first time,” I replied.
I raised my hand again.
Focused harder.
The connection strengthened.
The power sharpened.
This time—
When I struck—
The light cut through the guardian cleanly.
Its form shattered into fragments of silver that dissolved into the air.
I blinked.
“Well… that worked.”
Behind me, Lyra finished her opponent with a final strike.
It dissipated the same way.
The room went still.
The light dimmed slightly.
The remaining guardians stepped back.
Then—
They vanished.
Just like that.
Silence returned.
I lowered my hand slowly.
“That was… intense,” I said.
Kael exhaled.
“You did well,” Kael said.
“I didn’t die,” I replied. “That feels like success.”
Lyra smirked slightly.
“That’s one way to measure it,” Lyra said.
Selene stepped closer.
“You are learning,” Selene said.
“I feel like everything is trying to kill me while I do it,” I said.
“That is also part of the process,” she replied.
I sighed.
“Of course it is.”
The platform pulsed again.
Softer this time.
Warmer.
The tension in the room eased.
The doors behind us creaked open slowly.
I glanced back.
“Well,” I said, “that’s encouraging.”
Kael nodded toward the deeper part of the temple.
“It’s not over,” Kael said.
I followed his gaze.
The temple extended further inward.
Deeper.
Darker.
More powerful.
I exhaled slowly.
“I didn’t think it was.”
And as we stepped forward again, one thing became very clear—
This place wasn’t just testing me.
It was shaping me.
And I had a feeling…
It was far from finished.
