Fractures in the Rank

1649 Words
I was halfway down the hall from the medical bay when I heard raised voices coming from the office. The door was cracked open. I stopped. Crutches made quiet movement hard, so I stayed where I was and listened. Ethan’s voice came first, tight and controlled. “You rewrote the law in front of twenty people without a full vote. That is going to bite us.” Ella answered before Adrian could. “Other packs will see it as weakness. One man changes the rules for a woman who showed up bleeding and half-dead. They will test the border harder because of it.” Adrian’s reply was flat. “They will see it as a declaration of war if they come for her. That is the point.” Blake’s voice cut in from farther inside. “Then let us stop waiting for them to decide. Push the southern line. Hit their scouts first. Make the cost clear.” I shifted my weight. The crutches creaked. No one seemed to notice. Ethan again. “Aggressive response risks open conflict before we are ready. We do not have the numbers for a full border war.” “We have the claim,” Adrian said. “That changes the math.” Ella laughed once, sharp. “The claim changes nothing if half the ranking members already question whether you made the call for the club or for yourself.” Silence stretched for a few seconds. I could picture Adrian’s face. The same blank look he wore when he did not want anyone reading him. “I made the call to keep her breathing,” he said. “The rest is noise.” Blake pushed harder. “Noise gets people killed. Give me the order to clear the southern approach. I will make sure the next runners they send do not come back.” “No,” Adrian said. “Not yet. We answer the formal demand first. We do not start the shooting.” Ella’s voice dropped. “You are protecting a power spike we still do not understand. The whole building felt it last night. People are talking. They want to know what she is.” I felt my stomach turn. The power under my skin stirred like it had heard its name. Ethan spoke slower. “Strategically the claim makes sense. If the rivals want her bloodline, binding it here stops them from taking it. I hate the method. I do not hate the result.” “Finally,” Adrian said. “Do not thank me,” Ethan answered. “I am still counting the cost.” I had heard enough. I turned on the crutches and started back toward the medical bay. My hands shook on the grips. The mark on my neck felt hotter than it should. Maya looked up when I came through the door. “You were gone longer than a bathroom trip.” “I heard them,” I said. She closed the chart in her hands. “How much?” “Enough. Ella thinks the rewritten law makes the club look weak. Blake wants to start shooting. Ethan is halfway on board for strategy reasons. Adrian is not reversing anything.” Maya set the chart down. “And you think that means he already regrets it.” “I think he claimed me to lock down whatever woke up during the ritual. The protection talk came second.” Maya did not argue. She only pointed at the cot. “Sit before you fall. Your ankle is still a mess.” I sat. The crutches leaned against the wall. My palm still stung under the gauze from the shared cut. Footsteps approached the medical bay. Adrian stepped through the door alone. He closed it behind him. “You overheard,” he said. Not a question. “Hard not to when the door is open and everyone is loud.” He stayed near the door. “Ella is wrong about weakness. The rivals will see the claim as a line they cross at their own risk.” “And Blake?” “Blake wants blood. He always does. I am not giving the order yet.” I looked at him. “Did you claim me because of the power or because of the scent?” His silence lasted one beat too long. That was answer enough. I laughed once, short and ugly. “Right. The power. The thing that made the lights flicker and the whole building feel it. You needed that locked down under your mark.” “I claimed you because leaving you unmarked got you killed or taken. The power is a complication. It is not the reason.” “Your silence said otherwise.” Maya spoke from the side. “Both of you need to lower the volume. This room is not soundproof.” Adrian ignored her. “You are reading the worst version of every word.” “I am reading the version where an Alpha rewrites law, forces a mark, and then stands in a room with his officers talking about the cost like I am a tactical problem instead of a person.” He rubbed a hand over the back of his neck. The same tell from the night before. “I am not reversing the claim. I am not handing you over. Everything else is noise I have to manage so the club does not fracture while the rivals sit at the border.” “Noise,” I repeated. “That is what I am now. Noise you manage.” “That is not what I said.” “It is what it sounded like from the hallway.” Maya stepped between us with a water bottle and a look that dared either of us to keep going. “Drink. Then both of you shut up for five minutes. I am tired of stitching people who argue themselves into worse injuries.” I took the water but did not drink. Adrian stayed where he was. A knock hit the door. Harper stuck her head in, young face tight with nerves. “President. Scout report from the south. Harper Quinn, reporting.” Adrian turned. “Talk.” Harper stepped fully inside. She glanced at me once, then fixed her eyes on Adrian. “I ran the outer loop this morning. Left a short-range radio log open longer than I should have. The frequency is one the rivals have used before. I think they picked up the confirmation that the hybrid is still inside the main house.” The room went still. Adrian’s voice dropped. “You left a live log open on a compromised frequency.” Harper’s shoulders hunched. “I fixed it as soon as I realized. But the window was long enough. They know she has not moved.” Maya swore under her breath. I set the water bottle down. “So they know exactly where I am sleeping.” Harper nodded once. “Yes.” Adrian pointed at the door. “Find Ethan. Tell him I want a full review of every frequency we have used in the last forty-eight hours. Then you stay on night rotation until I say otherwise.” Harper left fast. The door clicked shut. I looked at Adrian. “Your own prospect just handed them my location.” “I will deal with Harper. The claim still holds.” “The claim does not stop a raid if they decide the cost is worth it.” He stepped closer. “Then we make the cost higher than they can pay.” I stood, crutches under my arms again. “You keep saying ‘we’ like I have a vote. I do not. I have a mark and a power I cannot control and a club that half wishes I had died in the trees.” Adrian’s jaw flexed. “You have protection. That is more than you had when you fell at the gate.” “Protection that came with a rewrite of your laws and a ritual that woke something I spent years burying. Forgive me if I am not grateful on schedule.” Maya moved to the door and opened it. “Out. Both of you. Or at least one of you. This room is for medical problems, not relationship warfare.” Adrian looked at me for a long second. “We are not done talking about this.” “I am.” He left. The door stayed open. I heard his boots head back toward the office. Maya closed it after him. “You pushed hard.” “He left a silence where an answer should have been. That is on him.” “Maybe. Or maybe you heard what you expected to hear.” I did not answer. My hands were steady on the crutches for the first time in hours. Anger did that. It burned the shake out of me. An hour later the medical bay door opened again without a knock. Ethan stood there, face grim. “Scout report just came in,” he said. “Southern trackers are no longer probing. They are massing. Looks like they are preparing to cross.” Maya straightened. “How many?” “More than a probe. Less than a full assault. Enough to test the claim hard.” I met Ethan’s eyes. “They know I am here. Harper made sure of that.” Ethan nodded once. “Adrian is already in the main room calling the ranking members back. Border is going to double again. You stay inside. No arguments.” He left. I sat back down on the cot. The mark on my neck pulsed once, low and steady, like it had heard the news too. Outside the medical bay I heard boots moving faster. Voices rising. Orders being given. The rivals were done waiting.
