**Chapter 2: A Queen from the City**

1129 Words
The city that never slept was a world apart from the quiet hum of Crofton. Layla Montgomery stepped out of her sleek black car and into the pulsating streets of New York City, where neon lights painted the sky and the energy of millions seemed to hum in the air. She was home. At 22, Layla had already made a name for herself in the world of business, politics, and high society. Her family was well-known among the wolves, her father a powerful Alpha with connections that spanned the globe. As the only daughter of five brothers, Layla was both a jewel and a burden. The pressure to live up to her family’s expectations had never been greater, and while her brothers had all settled down, she had spent her youth living under the radar—studying abroad, chasing dreams that didn’t align with the strict traditions of her pack. Her heels clicked sharply against the marble floors of her penthouse building as she ascended to her apartment, where a familiar figure stood waiting. “Layla.” Her father’s deep voice echoed through the lavish entryway. He stood by the window, looking out over the city, his tall frame imposing even in the soft light. Alpha Kenneth Montgomery was a man of command, his graying hair sharp and his jaw square. He was a king in his own right, and she, the princess. “Hi, Dad.” Layla smiled, her voice a little uncertain as she crossed the room to greet him. “Is everything alright?” “Everything is as it should be,” he said with a tight smile. “But I’ve heard news. You’re turning 22, Layla. And with it, the time has come for you to fulfill your role.” Layla’s stomach tightened. She had known this moment was coming, but hearing it from her father made it all the more real. The Mating Ceremony. The one she had been hiding from for years. “I know, Dad,” she said, her voice steady despite the nervousness gnawing at her insides. “I’ve been waiting. I just didn’t expect it to come so soon.” Her father turned from the window, his dark eyes focused on her with an intensity she knew well. “It’s time to take your place in the pack, Layla. You’ve been trained, educated, and prepared for this moment your entire life. The council expects you to find your mate at the upcoming ceremony.” The words hit her like a wave, her heart racing at the thought. Layla had always thought she would find her mate naturally, just as her brothers had, but now that the moment was upon her, she wasn’t so sure. The pressure to live up to her family’s legacy felt suffocating. And in the back of her mind, a thought she didn’t dare voice lingered—what if her mate wasn’t everything she imagined? “I’ll do my best,” Layla said, though even she could hear the uncertainty in her voice. Her father nodded, a slight smile tugging at his lips. “You’ve always been a brilliant strategist, Layla. I trust you’ll navigate this with the same grace and intelligence that you’ve shown in everything else.” “Thanks, Dad,” she replied, but her thoughts were elsewhere. The city, with its bright lights and promises of endless possibilities, had always been her world. The country life, with its traditions and customs, felt foreign to her—intimidating even. She had always wondered if she would ever fit into the role of Luna, the partner to a pack leader. Now, she was about to find out. That evening, Layla stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror in her bedroom, her fingers brushing over the fabric of a black dress that clung to her curves like a second skin. The gown shimmered under the soft light, its intricate beadwork catching the light like starlight. She looked like royalty, yet felt like a mere spectator in her own life. Her mind kept drifting to the Mating Ceremony. She’d heard stories—some beautiful, some tragic—of wolves who found their fated mates, of unions that brought peace to the packs. But there were also tales of mismatches, of struggles to balance duty and desire. She wasn’t sure she was ready for any of it. She had spent so many years focused on her studies, her career, and her own sense of independence. The idea of being bound to someone, of becoming someone’s Luna, felt both thrilling and terrifying. Layla exhaled slowly, adjusting the strap of her dress. As the only girl among five brothers, she had always been coddled, loved in a way that sometimes felt like a gilded cage. She was supposed to be perfect, graceful, poised. But was she ready to leave behind the life she knew to become something else—someone else? The sound of a knock on the door startled her from her thoughts. “Come in,” she called, turning towards the door. Her older brother, Isaac, stepped into the room, a knowing smile on his face. “You look stunning,” he said, his tone playful yet affectionate. “Dad told you about the ceremony, huh?” Layla nodded, her eyes meeting his in the mirror. Isaac was the eldest of her brothers, and although he was fiercely protective of her, he never shied away from teasing her. “You know, I always thought you’d be the one to find your mate early. What happened to the brilliant little girl who had everything figured out?” Isaac grinned, leaning against the doorframe. “I was too busy living my life,” Layla replied with a shrug. “But now, here we are.” Isaac’s expression softened. “You’ll be fine, Layla. You’ve got more strength than anyone I know. And if you don’t find your mate right away, well… we’ll figure it out. You’re not alone in this.” She smiled, appreciating his words, though doubt still lingered in her chest. “Thanks, Isaac.” Before he left, Isaac turned back to her. “By the way, don’t let Dad’s pressure get to you. You’ve got the entire pack watching, but they all respect you. Just be yourself.” Layla nodded, her heart a little lighter after hearing his words. She wasn’t sure what the future held, but she knew one thing for sure: the Moon Goddess had something in store for her. Whether it would be the mate of her dreams or a partnership of necessity, she would face it with the same resolve that had gotten her this far. As she gazed at her reflection one last time, Layla whispered to herself, “I’ll be ready.”
