Airless

The metallic echo of the blast doors sealing shut rang through the subterranean chamber like a death knell. Inside the vault foyer, the overhead ventilation shafts hissed sharply before dying completely. On the emergency control wall near the heavy glass partition, a crimson digital indicator light flickered to life, accompanied by a cold, automated voice: AIRFLOW RESTRICTED. EMERGENCY SEAL ENGAGED. ESTIMATED OXYGEN DEPLETION: NINE MINUTES, FORTY SECONDS. Rhea didn't waste a second panicking. Panic consumed oxygen, and right now, oxygen was her most valuable currency. She adjusted the tactical pack strapped securely across her chest, feeling the solid weight of the leather-bound physical ledger inside. She had secured the asset, but Julian had turned the vault into a steel coffin. "Lyra, talk to me," Rhea said into her headset, keeping her voice slow, measured, and calm to conserve her breathing. "Julian locked the primary blast doors and cut the air lines. I need an exit route." Through the receiver, static hissed before Lyra’s frantic voice cut back in. "Rhea! The blast blew out the building’s local relay, but I still have your signal! The blast doors are reinforced three-inch solid steel—there's no way to blow them from the inside without collapsing the whole sub-basement on top of you." "What about the secondary maintenance line?" Rhea asked, scanning the perimeter of the sealed room with her tactical flashlight. The beam of light cut through settling concrete dust, illuminating high-pressure hydraulic pipes and thick electrical conduits lining the ceiling. "Checking the structural schematics now!" Lyra’s keyboard clicked frantically. "Wait... the main vault was built in the 1980s over the city’s old underground storm drainage system. There’s a high-pressure drainage release hatch right underneath the main vault floor, but it’s sealed with a manual pressure lock!" "Where is the manual override?" Rhea asked, stepping up to the heavy steel floor plating near the central table. "It’s behind the primary hydraulic pump array in the corner of the room," Lyra replied. "But Rhea... that hatch opens directly into the overflow canal. The water pressure on the other side is massive. If you force that hatch open, thousands of gallons of dark river water are going to flood that room in seconds!" "It's better than suffocating in the dark," Rhea said flatly. OXYGEN Depletion: SEVEN MINUTES, TEN SECONDS. Rhea moved to the far corner of the foyer. Behind a heavy steel mesh cage sat the main hydraulic pump—a massive, grease-covered engine driving the vault door's locking mechanisms. Nestled deep behind the mechanical pistons was a rusted, iron wheel marked with heavy red warning paint: EMERGENCY DRAINAGE RELEASE. The steel mesh cage was locked tight with a heavy padlocked latch. Rhea pulled her Las Farra dagger, jamming the flat of the titanium blade into the padlock’s shackle. She braced her boot against the concrete wall, applying maximum lever pressure. Metal screeched against metal until the padlock snapped with a sharp CRACK. She kicked the mesh door open and squeezed inside the tight space behind the hydraulic pump. The air in the room was already growing thin. Her chest felt heavy, a slight dull throb beginning to build behind her temples as carbon dioxide levels rose. She grabbed the rusted iron wheel with both hands. "Rhea, wait!" Lyra warned. "Once that seal breaks, the surge will sweep you into the lower drainage tunnels. If you get knocked unconscious by the current, you’ll drown before you hit the harbor outlet!" "Prepare the sedan at the river mouth," Rhea commanded, her grip tightening on the iron wheel. "I’m opening it now." Rhea threw her body weight to the left. The rusted wheel groaned, locked in place by decades of grime and pressure. "Come on..." Rhea growled through gritted teeth, her muscles straining. OXYGEN DEPLETION: FIVE MINUTES. With a sudden, violent screech of twisting iron, the wheel turned half an inch. Then another. CLACK-CLACK-CLACK. Deep beneath her boots, the concrete floor began to vibrate violently. A low, thunderous roar echoed through the steel pipes as water pressure built up beneath the hatch. Suddenly, the central steel floor plate buckled upward. A jet of icy black water exploded through the seams of the floorboards like a geyser, slamming into the concrete ceiling with immense force. The blast of water knocked Rhea off her feet, throwing her across the foyer into the hard edge of the central table. The room filled with terrifying speed. Within thirty seconds, freezing water was up to Rhea’s waist, swirling into a violent whirlpool around the buckling floor hatch. Concrete dust, broken glass, and fallen equipment were sucked into the dark vortex below. Rhea scrambled to her feet, fighting against the powerful current dragging her toward the center. She grabbed her tactical knife, securing it in her teeth, and took one deep, final breath of thin air just as the rising water touched the ceiling. The room went completely under. Surrounded by pitch-black, ice-cold water, Rhea kicked toward the opening in the floorboards. The suction of the drainage hatch grabbed her, pulling her down into the narrow, flooding concrete tunnel beneath the building. The current was brutal. She was slammed against cold stone walls, tumbling out of control through the dark, rushing underground river. Her lungs burned for air, every instinct screaming at her to open her mouth, but she kept her jaw locked tight around the dagger handle, her eyes squeezed shut as the water carried her at terrifying speeds through the subterranean channel. Up ahead, a faint, pale greenish light broke through the blackness—the underwater mouth of the drainage tunnel opening into the city harbor. Using the last remaining strength in her legs, Rhea kicked toward the light, breaking through the surface of the open ocean water into the crisp, cold night air. GASPS! Rhea pulled herself up, gasping desperately for air, her lungs burning as she floated in the dark harbor waves beneath the shadow of the industrial piers. A hundred yards away, the sleek black escape boat glided silently through the water, its low-visibility running lights cutting through the sea mist. Lyra stood on the deck, dropping a rescue ladder over the side. "Rhea! Over here!" Rhea swam through the freezing harbor water, grabbing the metal ladder and pulling herself onto the deck. She collapsed onto the floorboards, coughing up sea water, but her hand immediately reached to her chest to check her pack. The heavy leather ledger was still there, completely protected by the shockproof waterproof casing. Lyra rushed over, throwing a thermal blanket around Rhea's shivering shoulders. "You made it! I thought... I thought Julian had you for good that time." Rhea pulled the thermal blanket tight, wiping wet hair from her face. Her dark eyes, though exhausted, burned with lethal focus as she looked back at the glowing skyline of the financial district. "Julian thinks I'm dead at the bottom of that vault," Rhea said, her voice raspy but cold as iron. She reached into her wet pocket, pulling out a small black micro-transmitter she had stripped from one of Julian's guards during the fight in the foyer. The screen was still active, displaying a live encrypted audio frequency. Rhea tapped the receiver, holding it to her ear. Through the static, Julian’s calm, arrogant voice was speaking to an international buyer: "The vault is sealed. The Sacramento heiress is eliminated, and the ledger is destroyed. Proceed with the final transfer of the syndicate accounts." A slow, dangerous smile touched Rhea’s lips as she handed the transmitter to Lyra. "He just confirmed to his board that the threat is gone," Rhea said softly. "Now... we strike when he thinks he’s safest."
