Dock 4 Protocol

737 Words
The midnight mist hung thick and heavy over the industrial coastline of Dock 4. Giant orange gantry cranes stood like silent iron skeletons against the black sea, their rusted cables groaning softly as the tide rolled in against the wooden pilings. Rhea Sacramento stepped out of the shadow of a stacked row of rusted shipping containers, wearing her lightweight tactical suit under a dark rain shell. Rain brushed against her face, but her breath remained steady and slow. In her ear, her comms earpiece hummed with low-frequency static. "Rhea, I've secured overwatch from the south crane," Madam Vane’s crisp, quiet voice broke through the earpiece. "I have two thermal signatures on the perimeter deck. Silas Vance is at the center of the loading bay. He is not alone." "What about the city power grid relay?" Rhea asked softly, keeping her hand hovering an inch above her suppressed sidearm. "He’s tapped directly into the primary junction box for the harbor district," Lyra reported from the mobile command van three blocks away. "If he pulls the fail-safe breaker, half the city's municipal power goes dark in three seconds." Rhea adjusted her gloves. "Understood. Stand by on comms." She walked into the open space of the container yard, her tactical boots leaving faint, silent prints on the damp gravel. Fifty yards ahead, standing beneath a single flickering sodium streetlight, was Silas Vance. He wore his tailored dark coat, his hands resting casually inside his pockets. Behind him, positioned near the massive high-voltage junction box, were two heavily armed operatives in unmarked black fatigues, their rifles lowered but ready. Silas didn't turn around until Rhea stopped twenty paces away. "You came alone, Miss Sacramento," Silas said, his pale eyes catching the dim amber light of the streetlamp. "Or at least, you gave the appearance of coming alone. I assume Madam Vane is monitoring us from the crane array?" On the crane high above, Madam Vane’s voice crackled softly in Rhea’s ear: "He knows." "It doesn't change the equation, Silas," Rhea said calmly, her voice carrying clear through the sound of the ocean waves. "You called me here to close a ledger. Let's close it." Silas took his hands out of his pockets, holding a small digital detonator in his left palm. "The Obsidian Sovereign doesn't just eliminate targets, Rhea," Silas said, stepping forward until the distance between them narrowed to fifteen feet. "We eliminate legacies. Julian Cross failed because he fought for personal wealth. I succeed because I fight for systemic control. Behind that junction box is an explosive charge linked directly to your family's legacy infrastructure." Rhea's eyes flicked briefly toward the junction box. "The Sacramento Substation network." "Precisely," Silas smiled faintly. "Your father built this city's private energy grid thirty years ago. If this junction detonates, the entire financial district crashes—and the media will report that Arthur Sacramento's daughter destroyed the city's infrastructure in a desperate bid for revenge." "A framed terror attack," Rhea murmured, her dark eyes locking back onto Silas. "Clean, ruthless, and total character assassination." "It leaves no room for martyrs," Silas agreed smoothly. He raised the detonator slightly. "You have two choices. Hand over your encrypted master files for Sacramento Global and step off the board forever... or watch your father's legacy burn tonight." The wind whipped across the open dock, carrying the smell of salt and ozone. Rhea slowly raised her left hand, unclipping a small, glowing blue flash drive from her wrist harness. "The master files are right here," Rhea said. Silas’s eyes narrowed slightly as he focused on the drive. For a fraction of a second, his thumb relaxed on the detonator switch. That fraction of a second was all Rhea needed. "Lyra, cut the local relay NOW!" Rhea shouted into her comms. Before Silas could react, a high-frequency EMP pulse deployed by Lyra’s mobile command van burst through the dock's local spectrum. The sodium streetlight exploded in a shower of sparks, the digital detonator in Silas's hand died instantly with a faint pop, and total darkness swallowed the container yard. THWIP. THWIP. Rhea drew her sidearm in a fluid motion, firing two suppression rounds directly toward the two operatives by the junction box before lunging straight into the dark toward Silas Vance
