The silence in the concrete corridor was so heavy you could hear the slow, rhythmic drip of water from a cracked pipe somewhere in the darkness. Emergency red lights cast long, twisted shadows across the walls, framing the broad figure of Julian Cross as he raised his heavy revolver.
Rhea didn't flinch. Her hands remained at her sides, perfectly still, every muscle in her body primed like a coiled spring.
"You always did like to make grand entrances, Julian," Rhea said, her voice echoing smoothly off the wet concrete. "Constructing an empire on stolen money makes a man paranoid, doesn't it?"
Julian took a single step forward, his polished leather shoes crunching against scattered grit on the floor. "Paranoia keeps men alive, little viper. Your father lacked it. He thought contracts, handshakes, and family honor could hold back the tide. Look where it got him."
"My father trusted snakes," Rhea countered, her eyes tracking the subtle shift of Julian’s shoulder weight. "I don't make the same mistake."
Before Julian could pull the trigger, Rhea's left hand swept down to her belt.
She slammed a heavy compact smoke canister against the wall, breaking the pressure seal and tossing it directly into the narrow space between them. Instantly, thick, acrid gray chemical smoke billowed out, completely obscuring the corridor in a dense wall of smog.
Julian fired two heavy rounds into the haze—BANG! BANG!—the muzzle flashes illuminating the smoke like lightning strikes, but the bullets only bit into empty concrete.
Rhea had already moved.
Staying low beneath the rising smoke line, she darted to her right, pressing her back against the damp brickwork. She didn't draw her sidearm. In a enclosed corridor filled with smoke, muzzle flashes would only give away her position. Instead, she slipped a tactical combat blade from her inner vest, holding the hilt in a reverse grip.
Through the haze, she heard the heavy, deliberate footfalls of Julian’s advance guard—two tactical operatives entering the hallway with night-vision visors lowered.
"Sweep the left flank!" a mercenary ordered, his voice muffled by a respirator.
Rhea lunged from the shadows.
She caught the first mercenary by his shoulder rig, driving her knee hard into his chest before he could raise his carbine. As he stumbled back, she spun behind him, using his body as a shield just as the second operative swung his weapon around. A sharp burst of suppressed gunfire ripped into the first mercenary's tactical vest.
Rhea shoved the dead weight forward, throwing the second operative off balance. With a lightning-fast strike, she swept her leg behind his ankles, bringing him crashing to the hard ground. Before he could recover, she drove the butt of her dagger into his temple, knocking him cold.
"Rhea!" Lyra’s voice burst through her earpiece, cutting through the static. "The heavy transport is loaded! I have Victor in the back, but we have two armored SUVs closing on the alley exit from the north block!"
"Hold your position," Rhea commanded softly into her mic, wiping a smear of soot from her cheek. "I’m ten seconds behind you."
She turned back toward the main stairwell, but as the smoke began to thin under the ventilation draft, she saw Julian standing near the exit door. He wasn't rushing. He wasn't panicked. He was calmly reloading his revolver with fresh heavy-caliber rounds.
"You're fast, Rhea," Julian called out, stepping through the clearing air. "Las Farra trained you well. But you're fighting a war on the wrong front."
"The front is wherever you are, Julian," Rhea said, her blade held steady.
Julian smiled—a cold, ruthless expression that chilled the air more than the concrete walls.
"Is it?" Julian asked softly. "While you were busy chasing Victor's shadow accounts in this rat hole, my secondary team was securing the primary vaults at the city center. The Sacramento family legacy isn't just money, girl. It's the physical ledger of every high-level operative your father ever protected."
Rhea’s jaw tightened slightly. The physical ledger—the master list containing the identities, aliases, and locations of every surviving operative under the Las Farra umbrella.
"You're lying," Rhea said, though her heart beat with a fast, dangerous rhythm.
"Test me," Julian replied, stepping backward through the heavy steel exit door and locking the deadbolt from the outside. "You have six hours before that ledger is uploaded to every black-market buyer on the continent. Choose carefully, heiress: take your revenge on me, or save what's left of your family."
The heavy lock clicked into place.
Rhea didn't waste time trying to breach the reinforced steel door. She turned on her heel and sprinted down the lower service hallway, bursting through the double doors into the dark alleyway where the black escape van sat idling.
Lyra hit the rear door release, and Rhea vaulted into the back, slamming the doors shut behind her.
"Drive!" Rhea yelled.
The van roared out of the alleyway, tires screaming against the damp asphalt as Lyra maneuvered them into the midnight city traffic just as two armored SUVs turned down the block with high beams blinding the street.
In the back of the van, Victor Drake cowered against the metal floorboards, his hands zip-tied in front of him.
Rhea slumped against the bench seat, breathing heavily, her eyes burning with cold rage as she pulled her tablet from her pocket.
"Did you hear him over the link?" Lyra asked nervously from the driver's seat. "Is it true about the physical ledger?"
"He has it," Rhea said quietly, tapping the screen to initiate a high-level encrypted scan of the city's central vault network. "He knew Victor was a dead end. He used Victor as bait to pull me out into the open while he cleared the vault."
"So what do we do?" Lyra asked, her voice tight. "If that ledger leaks, everyone who helped you hide ten years ago gets executed."
Rhea looked down at her hands, still dusted with concrete powder and gunpowder residue. She closed her fingers into a tight fist.
"Then we don't go after Julian's money anymore," Rhea said, her voice dropping into an icy, dangerous tone. "We burn the central vault to the ground."
