Episode 1 — The Night We Let Go

393 Words
The rain had been falling for hours. Elena stood outside the Vale mansion, staring at the closed door behind her. She had been standing there for almost a minute, but Adrian still hadn't come after her. Not even once. She slowly wrapped her arms around herself, trying to keep her hands from trembling. She had never imagined that the man who once made her feel safest could make her feel so completely alone. Inside the mansion, Adrian stood motionless in the living room. His jaw was clenched as he stared at the door Elena had just walked through. He wanted to follow her. Every part of him wanted to. But the words he had heard earlier kept repeating in his mind. The evidence. The lies. The betrayal he believed Elena had hidden from him. He couldn't understand why the woman he loved would keep something so important from him. And Elena couldn't understand why Adrian refused to believe her. “Adrian…” His mother’s voice came from behind him. “You need to let her go.” Adrian said nothing. His eyes remained fixed on the door. “She made her choice.” His hands slowly curled into fists. “No,” he said quietly. “She made me believe she did.” Outside, Elena finally walked away. Each step felt heavier than the last. She had waited for Adrian to stop her. He didn't. That was all the answer she needed. By the time she reached the end of the driveway, her tears were mixing with the rain. She stopped and looked back at the mansion one last time. “Goodbye, Adrian.” Inside the house, Adrian finally moved toward the door. But by the time he opened it, Elena was already gone. He stood beneath the rain, staring at the empty street. For the first time in his life, Adrian Vale felt powerless. He didn't know that the truth was not what he believed. He didn't know that Elena had left with a secret she hadn't even discovered yet. And he certainly didn't know that the woman he had just let go would one day return with a child who had his eyes. That night, two people who still loved each other chose to walk away. Neither of them knew it would take five years before they saw each other again.
