The final bell rang, signifying it was time to leave. Chairs scraped loudly as students rushed out of the classroom.
I remained seated, still trying to process what just happened.
I was having this Akwaman moment in my head, like did I really just hear muah?A tap on my shoulder snapped me out of my reverie.
“You okay?” Daniel said.
I ignored him and I started to pack my bag in a rushed manner, trying to get away from him as quickly as possible.
In a few seconds, I was already at the door, ready to bolt when he suddenly grabbed my hand and turned me to face him sending a jolt through my entire body.
I didn’t even think.
I couldn’t think.
My hands moved on their own accord and landed a resounding slap on his face. It echoed through the now empty class.
We both stood in shock for several minutes. It looked as if time stopped for a while.
To my greatest surprise, he chuckled.
Eh?
I’m convinced this boy has got one or more loose screws in his head.
“You’re quite the feisty one eh?” He breathed out.
Wetin this one papa dey talk?
“Anyway, I just wanted to ask where we should do the assignment, my house or yours.” He said and scratched the back of his head.
And again I say… Eh?I raised my eyebrow and eyed him up and down.
His eyes widened. “N- no- no, I didn’t mean it’s completely necessary for us to do the assignment in either of our houses, I honestly would be okay with wherever you choose.”
He spoke quickly… Too quickly.
Seeing him this flustered was funny…
Almost cute.
Success, get it together!
I cleared my throat and said, “Library… The library is fine. Tomorrow at lunch break, don’t be late.”
“Yure.” Daniel muttered.
I shook my head, turned round and left.
I’m not even going to try and think about whatever ‘yure’ means.
DANIEL’S POV…
Yure?
Dude really?
What does that even mean?!
I must have been trying to say either ‘yeah’ or ‘sure’ but my brain short circuited and I said ‘yure’ instead.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I face palmed and heaved a deep sigh.
I didn’t even get a chance to say bye to her.
At least I’ve got tomorrow to look forward to.
I smiled, remembering her face when our names were called out.
She was the only thing on my mind as I walked home, skipping on the tarred road.
As I neared my street, the air turned chilly, my smile dropped, I remembered I’m almost home.
I heaved another sigh as I trudged slowly.
I opened the door and a strong whiff of cigarettes attacked me at the entrance.
He’s here again.
I shuddered with a mixture of dread and disgust as I slowly made my way in.
Home sweet home.
