Chapter 8: The Silverwind Alliance

The next morning brought news that the Academy's traditional Welcoming Tournament would be held a week early, ostensibly to accommodate visiting dignitaries from the High Houses. Lysander recognized it for what it was—pressure from his siblings to expose his limitations publicly before he could improve. "Elara wasn't exaggerating about her innovations," Marcus observed, examining the crystalline device she'd left them. "I've never seen magical technology this advanced." "House Silverwind built their reputation on innovation," Lysander replied, though privately he was amazed by how far beyond his memories her work had progressed. "They wouldn't have achieved High House status otherwise." A knock interrupted their conversation. Marcus opened the door to reveal Elara herself, carrying a leather satchel and wearing practical Academy robes modified with numerous small pockets. "Good, you're both awake," she said, entering without invitation. "We need to talk about the tournament." "What about it?" Lysander asked. "The format's been changed." Elara set her satchel on Marcus's desk and began withdrawing various crystalline instruments. "Instead of individual demonstrations, it's now team competitions. Three-person squads, mixed faction participation required." Marcus frowned. "That's unusual. The tournament is traditionally about individual achievement." "Exactly." Elara activated one of her devices, which projected a small holographic display showing the Academy's layout. "Someone wants to see how you work with others, test your strategic thinking under pressure." "Or create opportunities for accidents during complex team maneuvers," Lysander added grimly. "That too." Elara manipulated the hologram, highlighting various locations. "But here's the thing—if we're going to be partners, we might as well use it to our advantage." She gestured to her collection of devices. "My family's specialty is combining magical theory with practical application. I've developed several techniques that could complement your abilities, assuming you're willing to trust me with some details about your magical affinity." Lysander considered carefully. In his previous timeline, he'd been secretive about his blocked magic, which had limited his ability to form meaningful alliances. This time, selective honesty might serve him better. "I have significant limitations in magical output," he said finally. "But I'm stronger in theory and strategy than most realize." "Limitations?" Elara's blue eyes sharpened. "What kind of limitations?" Marcus shot Lysander a questioning look. They'd discussed the possibility of artificial magical restriction, but Lysander hadn't confirmed it directly. "The kind that might be... artificially imposed," Lysander said carefully. Elara went very still. "Someone blocked your magic?" At his nod, she began pulling out additional devices. "That's incredibly complex magic. Also highly illegal under imperial law." She paused. "How extensive are the blocks?" "Severe. But potentially reversible with the right approach." "Show me," she demanded, producing a sophisticated crystalline scanner. "This can map magical pathways without invasive techniques." After a moment's hesitation, Lysander allowed her to run the scan. The device hummed softly as it worked, projecting a three-dimensional map of his magical anatomy. The blockages appeared as dark knots wrapped around glowing pathways. "Seven barriers," Elara breathed. "This is master-level work. Whoever did this had incredible skill and detailed knowledge of your magical development." "Can your technology help remove them?" Marcus asked. "Not directly. But..." Elara manipulated the display, highlighting specific points where the barriers were thinner. "I might be able to create resonance devices that temporarily bypass some of the restrictions. Not a cure, but potentially enough enhancement for you to compete effectively." Lysander leaned forward. "What would that require?" "Trust, for starters." Elara met his eyes directly. "The devices would need to be calibrated specifically to your magical signature. That means sharing details about your true abilities, not just your current limitations." It was a risk, but one Lysander was prepared to take. Elara had proven herself trustworthy in his previous timeline, and her technological advancement in this timeline could provide the edge he needed. "I have an affinity for Anima magic," he said. "Potentially very strong, based on theoretical calculations." Both Marcus and Elara stared at him. Anima was the rarest of the five major magical aspects, dealing with life force manipulation. True Anima mages appeared perhaps once in a generation. "That explains the white light during your sorting," Elara said slowly. "And why someone would want to block your development." She began sketching notes on a piece of paper. "Anima magic combined with my resonance amplifiers... yes, that could work." "What exactly are you proposing?" Marcus asked. "For the tournament? I create temporary amplification devices that let Lysander access a fraction of his true potential. We form a team that plays to all our strengths—Marcus handles defensive Terra magic, I provide technological support and tactical coordination, Lysander uses enhanced Anima abilities for both offense and healing." "And after the tournament?" Lysander pressed. "After the tournament, we work together to find a permanent solution to your magical blocks." Elara's expression was determined. "Because if someone was willing to cripple an imperial prince's magic, they won't stop at sabotaged training exercises." Lysander extended his hand. "Partners?" "Partners," Elara agreed, shaking it firmly. Marcus joined the handshake. "Count me in. House Thornwood has always honored its alliances." As they began planning their approach to the tournament, Lysander felt a familiar satisfaction. In his previous life, this alliance had formed months later and under much worse circumstances. This time, he was building his power base early and with better information. The failed prince was about to become significantly less failed.
