Chapter 9: The Garden's Test

The survival training exercise took place in a specially prepared section of the Whispering Gardens, where Academy instructors had introduced various magical hazards to test student reflexes and teamwork. Professor Vex, the Academy's survival specialist, led the briefing with his characteristic bluntness. "You'll work in your tournament teams," he announced to the assembled first and second-year students. "The objective is simple: retrieve a crystal beacon from the center of the maze and return it here within two hours. The gardens contain both natural and artificially enhanced dangers." Lysander surveyed their competition while Elara made final adjustments to the resonance amplifiers concealed beneath his Academy robes. Teams from all factions were present, including several that bore the subtle markers he'd learned to recognize as politically motivated groupings. "Remember," Elara whispered, "the amplifiers will give you perhaps twenty percent of your potential output, but only for short bursts. Don't waste the energy on flashy displays." Marcus checked his equipment one final time. "Terra magic should handle most physical obstacles. What about the magical hazards?" "Depends on what they've introduced," Lysander replied, though his memories from the previous timeline gave him some advantages. "Standard protocol includes animated plants, illusory passages, and sensory distortion fields." Professor Vex raised his hand for attention. "Begin!" The teams scattered into the maze, each taking a different entrance. Lysander led his team down the eastern path, following routes he remembered from his previous experience while appearing to make intuitive decisions. "This feels too easy," Marcus muttered as they navigated the first series of turns without encountering obstacles. "It is too easy," Elara agreed, consulting a handheld scanner. "Magical density increases dramatically ahead. Something big is waiting." They rounded a corner to find their path blocked by a massive thorned vine that pulsed with malevolent energy. The Whispering Thornvine—a hybrid creation that fed on magical energy and grew more aggressive when threatened. "Standard approach would be fire magic to burn it back," Marcus observed. "Which would make it exponentially more dangerous," Lysander replied. "Thornvines convert destructive energy into growth. We need a different strategy." He activated Elara's amplifier and reached out with his enhanced Anima magic, not to attack the plant but to communicate with it. The thornvine's primitive consciousness recognized his life magic as non-threatening, and after a moment of contact, it slowly retracted its blocking tendrils. "How did you know that would work?" Marcus asked as they passed through. "Lucky guess," Lysander replied, though privately he remembered Professor Thorne explaining Anima interactions with magical flora during a late-night study session in his previous timeline. The deeper sections of the maze proved more challenging. They encountered a section where the paths constantly shifted, forcing Elara to use her scanner to map stable routes while Marcus created temporary Terra anchors to mark their passage. "Three teams ahead of us," Elara reported, studying her scanner's display. "But they're all stuck at some kind of barrier near the center." They emerged from the shifting maze to find the other teams gathered around a circular clearing where a crystalline beacon sat atop a raised platform. Between the teams and their objective, a garden of elegant flowering trees swayed in the breeze. "Looks peaceful enough," one student from House Drakos commented loudly. "What's the challenge?" As if responding to his words, the trees suddenly lashed out with whip-like branches, forcing the nearest team to scramble backward. The flowers released clouds of sparkling pollen that caused immediate disorientation in anyone who breathed it. "Dreamspore Willows," Lysander identified. "They react to magical signatures. The more magic you use near them, the more aggressive they become." Several teams had already tried brute force approaches, only to be driven back by increasingly violent tree responses. The scattered students showed signs of pollen poisoning—confusion, stumbling movements, and dilated pupils. "How do we get past them?" Marcus asked. "We don't go past them," Lysander replied, studying the pattern of tree movement. "We go through them, but not the way they expect." He activated Elara's amplifier again and extended his Anima magic, but instead of trying to communicate with the trees, he reached out to the students affected by the pollen. Life magic could accelerate the body's natural healing processes, clearing toxins faster than they could accumulate. "What are you doing?" demanded Cadet Helena from House Valerian as her disorientation suddenly cleared. "Helping," Lysander replied simply, extending his healing magic to encompass all the affected students. "The trees aren't the real test." As the pollen-drugged students regained their clarity, understanding dawned. This wasn't a competition between teams—it was a test of leadership and cooperation under pressure. "Everyone back away from the trees," Lysander called, loud enough for all teams to hear. "Let their aggression level drop, then we'll coordinate a retrieval." "Why should we listen to you?" challenged Viktor, the same third-year who had tried to "accidentally" injure him during combat training. "Because I'm the only one here with Anima magic strong enough to keep you coherent if you breathe more pollen," Lysander replied bluntly. "And because this exercise isn't about individual teams winning—it's about Academy students working together." The gathering students looked uncertain, but as the trees gradually calmed with the reduction in nearby magic use, the wisdom of cooperation became apparent. "What's your plan?" asked Helena, speaking for the group. "Marcus creates a Terra shield wall to block the worst of the pollen. Elara uses her scanner to identify the safest path through the grove. I maintain healing magic to counteract any pollen exposure. Everyone else moves in coordinated groups, using minimal magic until we reach the beacon." It took another ten minutes to organize the effort, but the plan worked. The combined teams retrieved not just one beacon but three that had been hidden throughout the grove, each requiring different team compositions to reach safely. As they emerged from the maze together, Professor Vex waited with an expression of surprised approval. "Interesting approach," he commented. "Most classes require multiple attempts before students realize the exercise rewards cooperation over competition." "Sometimes the obvious solution isn't the right one," Lysander replied diplomatically. Later, as they walked back to the dormitories, Marcus shook his head in amazement. "You're not at all what people expect, are you?" "Few people are," Lysander replied. "The trick is knowing when to reveal what you're capable of." Elara studied her scanner readings with obvious fascination. "Your Anima magic resonated beautifully with the amplifier. With proper calibration, we might be able to achieve even better results." As they reached the Arcanum Tower, Lysander noticed several students watching them with new respect. Word would spread quickly about the failed prince who had organized a successful rescue of his competitors. It was exactly the kind of reputation he needed to build—competent and trustworthy, but not threatening enough to trigger immediate retaliation from his siblings. The game was progressing exactly as planned.
