Late Night Vampire

“What are you doing here? I was sure our meeting will be tomorrow,” I said, opening the door halfway. “I’m sorry for bothering you at home Cassie, but your boss will not stop calling my office,” the way my name rolled off his tongue sent shivers down my spine and I didn’t like that. For all I know, this man could kill me. I need to avoid falling for his charm. “I think it best you call me Miss. Warner. It won’t look right with you are my client and me allowing you to be on a first-name basis,” I stammered. “That’s ridiculous Cassie,” He walked in pushing right by me, and took a seat on my couch. My home phone rang again. But I am frozen in place, staring at this man who made himself right at home at my house. No, this vampire. Before my senses could get to me, the sound of a message being left chimed, and I rushed to the answering machine. It wouldn’t be good if a potential client heard any business messages, and I needed to silence that thing. Cassie, I’m sorry if my last message sounded a bit overboard. I trust your decision in whoever you allow to assist you in the Auxillio case. I was just hoping for a chance to talk. Thanks. Antonio’s eyes darted up angrily. Perhaps he thought I was telling people about his case. “Listen,” I started before he cut me off. “That is why I’m here. Your boss is insisting you need someone to take notes and assist you. I cannot risk someone letting this out before we are ready. They will s*******r my company, and my employees,” he said. “I already handled it. I told the paralegal sent to assist me, I do not need her services tomorrow, but long term we will need to figure a way around this,” I sighed. “Tell me about your bosses and the paralegals. If I’m to decide on this, I will need to know all I can. Leave nothing out. I’m not interested in anything I could have looked up online but don’t spare any details of anything else, please,” “You can’t be serious. I can’t just tell you people’s private lives. Decide based on my judgment. I have no problem telling you anything that may be important or compromise your situation, but that’s it. You accepted me without it,” He laughed, a deep sexy head falling back laugh. “Listen, love, I know more about you than you know. Do you think I would have revealed myself to you had I not thoroughly researched you?” “I got nothing to hide. The internet holds no secrets about me,” I shrugged. “Oh no love, I interviewed anyone and everyone. I know your hopes, your fears, your aspirations, your love life, your family,” I cut him off there, “My family?” “I had to interview them to get a sense of who you are. They raised you. Surely you would take some morals and standards from them,” he said. “You interviewed my family?” I half didn’t believe him, I mean no one had mentioned it to me and my mother wasn’t one to miss a chance to gossip especially when Lakewood’s so-called most eligible bachelor is asking about me. “Don’t get so worried, I made sure they didn’t remember it. They will remember it if asked though as I didn’t feel a full erase was appropriate. I’m not a monster, you know.” he snorted. “Well, I guess I can check that off my vampire checklist. Get out Mr. Morros, and find someone else to represent you because I officially decline,” I stood up and walked to the door, opening it for him so he could leave. I didn’t care how sexy he was or how much I loved the way my name sounded on his lips, it was out of line to invade my privacy as he did. “Close the door, Cassie. Now,” he commanded. I did as he wished, though I knew it was because of the power his command exuded. “What are you going to do, bite me?” I put my chin up and looked him in the eye. I would not fear him even if he was like Dracula. He swiftly moved in front of me as he took my chin in his hands looking deep into my eyes, “love, trust me it would be a pleasure to drink your blood but I don’t bite on the first date. I’m not a monster. Before you decide, hear me out. I only repressed the memory because I didn’t want you thinking some psychopath you have never met is asking about you. Once you ask them about me, they will remember and you will see their talks with me were pleasurable and not as intrusive as you would think. I like to think I was getting to know you.” “But,” I protested. “I wish you to agree to represent me willingly and will give you that last opportunity now,” he penetrated me with his eyes, and for a moment I felt something deep within me. I wasn’t quite sure if it was fear or just my adrenaline kicking into overdrive at having a hot, sexy vampire pinning me to the wall threatening my life. “Willingly? It’s always my decision and you will not force me,” Truthfully, he had me until he said that last line. “You are the first human I have ever revealed my true self to willingly. I cannot break a rule I set in place over two hundred years ago to save my people. That is why I had to research you so readily and why I must insist I know more of the others if they are to assist you in this case. My people rely on me to make the right decisions on this.” I hadn’t realized I was the first human, but the two hundred year comments stuck in my head more than anything. “So no one knows vampires exist then? I mean, surely the tales and fascination with vampires exist because someone knows,” I said. “There are certain factions and entities who know, such as the Government. Many years ago our kind lived alongside and some even loved humans, but things changed. As technology and science progressed, they saw us as test objects for one, and some vampires fed unwillingly off of human blood during the recession. Though those were few and far between and much like humans have rotten apples we did too,” I nodded for him to continue, though the feeding of humans unwillingly bothered me he was right we had serial killers and many bad types too. I would not judge his kind based on that just yet. “Many of the underground world lived along with humans, witches, vampires, and even much longer ago the fae and other long-hidden species,” “What about werewolves?” I asked. “Yes, even werewolves though today their genes have all but died down. There are still some surviving in remote villages. Because of mixing with humans, their overall ability to change has ceased, except for those of purer blood that remains. Werewolves are not immortal.” he explained. “So if they aren’t immortal and so few exist, how do they survive?” “When they, like many of us, mixed their genes with humans, the gene died down. The offspring of a were and human has a fifty percent chance of having a full-blooded were. Their powers would not be as strong, but they could change. If an offspring doesn’t inherit the trait, the gene lies dormant much like recessive genes. Once a match is found which is difficult, the result goes back to that fifty-fifty chance again. But if the gene gets washed down a few generations, the gene lies dormant and can no longer produce a were unless someone with a very high ratio comes along.” “I think I understand, at least about the werewolves but back to vampires,” I said. “Vampires are much different in this respect. Long ago the vampires were at war with the Druidic clans, including the fae. The fae is where the Druids or what some humans call ancestral witches come from. The fae is mostly allergic to human blood because of the high iron contents. I can explain the war much later, it’s not important but vampires and the fae and their offspring all have a unique blood type. Despite the tales, we have blood in our bodies just as humans it pumps at a much slower rate which is why humans call us the undead or dead and why we drink blood. The government has long ago discovered our unique blood since a small percentage of humans carry that blood. We have had to live in hiding, making many humans think we were a fairy tale, and the governments work harder to find us.” “What do they wish to do with your blood?” I found the story fascinating. “Our blood has healing effects on certain illnesses, but it comes with a price that even the human hybrids suffer. They have long tried to figure out why the two blood types there are negative and positive, and we have obliged them in some research. A long time ago, they discovered an incompatibility with the two blood types that existed. When a woman of negative blood mixed and became pregnant with a child of positive blood inherited from the father it would attack the fetus and kill the baby.” “It seems I have heard about something like that happening. How tragic and scary,” “You have much to learn, but again another day on that note. Back to my ordeal. We aided the government in an injection that allows these women affected to give birth to healthy babies. All in hiding, but they are aware of where the information came from. Now they seek to treat other illnesses and even some that our blood will not cure but will allow people to live healthier lives. I wish to continue to help but won’t by force. Vampires could easily tear apart a human limb from limb if need be. Can you imagine the lengths we go to keep private? There have been a few here and there taken into custody because they couldn’t reveal their true natures to humans and were around humans and or family,” he said. “I think I understand but one question if humans died giving birth to these babies, or the baby died, then how did so many of us keep the blood type?” I wondered. “That’s a good question. The first child is usually safe as the blood has not mixed, yet it is only in subsequent births that it happens. A woman can give birth to children of my kind with no issues with the positive blood type, which is what most humans have. Just as our women can give birth to babies of human blood type. It is rarer for our kind to give birth, though. Many never have and have lived a long time,” he explained. “Are the fae immortal and do they suffer the same?” I asked. “Yes. The fae also was promiscuous. It was only the chosen ones who were enlightened and shown what became the Druidic path. Those partners chosen for pleasure alone were not enlightened, though some were by others. I can give you some books on most of that, for now, I just need you to understand the basics and why I need your help,” “Which is? I mean, I understand what’s going on, but how can I help?” I got up and stretched and Merlin who sat oddly perched on his lap eyed me. I had to admit it was strange seeing my cat sitting so content on his lap. They always jumped and ran in the movies. “Cats know who we are and that we hold them highly,” He must have noticed me looking down at Merlin. I shrugged my shoulders and sat back down. “Your help will be in securing any rights, monies, and negotiating for us with involved entities. My company supplies many things you are unaware of to hospitals and we have a research program that they would love to get their hands on, I wish to keep my company mine and all my research and maintain the business connections I choose. They may attempt to seize my company, which is unlawful. I, however, was not born here, and the government is aware of me but doesn’t know I’m the owner of Auxillio. They are only aware Auxillio has ties to me.” “How can that be? I mean, your name and picture are front and center,” I asked. “Because they are not aware of a name and not any name, they know me by. The name I use is not the name of the Western King,” “King?” I laughed. “Yes. I am one of the first and since my overall look does not match they do not suspect, again I can give you access to this information later,” He stopped talking and for a while, I just sat there thinking as he pets Merlin. Merlin was purring, and I became a little jealous he allowed a stranger to do that. There was so much to think about. Either way, I knew I was going to take this case if for access to information, but I also had to wonder about the repercussions on human society. “I have a few questions. I mean, what will this do to the humans.?” “That’s a good point and one that we have discussed at length. I will reveal no other species except vampires. The fae is long gone, the humans know this even. They no longer mix with humans or interact with them. They have crossed between worlds. Vampires will still only use accepted donors and operate on the same basis we have. Except we will live alongside humans like long ago. Humans will remain just as safe as they have been,” I’d have to see how this works but I knew it was time to give him an answer, but I had one last question. “You said you have never revealed yourself to a human, yet you claim to be one of the first,” “Yes. There was a time when humans speculated about me for various reasons but I have never told or showed a human my true nature as I have you. I should rephrase that I have never shown or told one that has lived to tell the tale. That was the past though, and very long ago,” he looked lost in thought as if he was reliving time and I wanted to know more but knew he would give none on that matter. “So no offspring, then?” I asked. “No. I have never given my genes to a human, though I have slept with many,” he smirked. “None that you know of," I rolled my eyes. “No, I’m positive of that. I would know for one as my blood would call to me and I took precautions beyond what humans take,” he said. I guess he meant some kind of vampire birth control. I was even more fascinated by him. Such a lonely life to never want to have children. Wait, but he didn’t say he had no children, only not with humans. Could vampires even impregnate each other, I wondered? I couldn’t remember if he covered that already. “So, what is your answer?” He stood up and looked around as if taking in my home for the first time. “I will help you. They will insist on an assistant though, so why don’t we do this. Let me decide who will be my assistant then before I tell them I will answer any question you have of my choice,” “Or, I allow you to have your assistant in name only. Meaning they can perform tasks that won’t reveal the nature of the case, and I provide you with one that will. I will work this out with your boss by letting him know that once the case is ready, your assistant will have a more active role.” “Hmm, could end up a conflict of interest,” I said. “Nope, not the one I Have in mind. They have no ties to my company in any legal way,” He started walking towards the door and I followed. Before walking out, however, he leaned down and kissed me softly on the cheek.“Goodnight Cassie. I’m glad you said yes because killing you would not have been easy,” he smirked as he shut the door . That bastard!
