Chapter 2 “Break the law” Toren vale POV Standing there, dripping, was *Serena*. The weak Omega. Kade’s mistake. The girl I’d found on her knees in the kitchen 3 hours ago. Scrubbing floors. Hands bleeding. Dress soaked from the wash bucket. Head down. Defiant anyway. That’s when I should’ve felt it. In the kitchen. Under the flickering light. When she looked up at me with those pale blue eyes and didn’t beg. I’d felt a flicker then. Attraction I had no right to feel. I buried it. Because duty. Because Kade. Because she was broken. Because her dress was clinging to her and I noticed the way water dripped down her collarbone and I shouldn’t have. What is this feeling? No. The Moon Goddess wouldn’t do this to me. Not her. Not the girl with no wolf. But Ash didn’t care. He remembered the kitchen too. The way she smelled. Blood and soap. The way she trembled and still didn’t cry._ Her dress was soaked to her skin now too. And Ash noticed. I noticed. The way her n*****s peaked against wet fabric. The way she was shivering in my doorway like she’d run here. She’s my mate. I couldn’t deny it. Even though denying it was the only thing keeping both of us alive. Ash was already pacing. _Claim her. Take her inside. No one sees her like this. Not again._ Toren was still standing there, frozen. Because if I touched her, the kitchen wouldn’t be the only place I lost control. I couldn’t control it. The urge hit like a blade. I looked into her pale blue eyes. The way her lips curved. Wet. Small. Trembling. How come I haven’t noticed how beautiful she was? That was it. I moved forward and grabbed her by the waist. Couldn’t stop myself. My hands were shaking. I kissed her. Hard. Desperate. Like I’d been drowning and she was air. Like I was punishing her for being my mate. Like I was begging her to forgive me for waiting so long. She tasted like rain and soap and blood. She tasted like mine Serena gasped into my mouth. Froze. Serena POV I swear I hadn’t had these rush of emotions before. One second I was shivering in the rain. The next, Beta Toren was looking at me like I was something holy. Like I was something dangerous. But I can swear something extraordinary happened. It started in my chest. Like claws. Like fire. Like I was being ripped open. And then I felt it. *My wolf.* Nyx. I just knew the name. It cut through me. Sharp and quiet and old. Up,she said. That’s him._` My knees buckled. I grabbed the doorframe to stay standing. Toren was staring at me. His eyes glowing. His jaw clenched like he was in denial And then his hands were on my waist. Hot. Possessive. Shaking. I should’ve run. I should’ve screamed. And then he kissed me. God. It wasn’t gentle. It was 18 years of want and war and _mine_. I gasped into his mouth. My hands fisted in his shirt. I’d never been kissed before. I’d never felt anything A moan escapes as pleasure washes over me in waves. Excitement at its peak i could feel her my inner wolf The excitement vanished just as it came. The moment Toren broke the kiss, his breath shaky, his hands still gripping her arms like he wasn’t sure if he should hold on or let go. For a second Serena thought her heart was going to burst. Mate. It was real. Then he stepped back. His eyes weren’t gold anymore. They were cold. Closed off. I, Toren Vale, reject you as my mate."* I looked at Toren after he uttered those words. My chest was caving in but my eyes stayed dry. I couldn’t help it. My mind dragged me back. All those years. Crushing on him from across the pack halls. Watching him laugh with others while I stayed invisible. Expecting the least closure even though he maltreated me. Even though he looked through me like I was nothing. And for once. _For once in my life_ something finally went as planned. The Moon Goddess finally had pity on me. She looked down and said *"Here. Toren is yours."* Mate. Me. An omega. I thought... maybe this was it. Maybe I wasn’t unlovable. Only for him to reject it. As fast as it came. Is it my fault that I am an omega? Is that why I’m so easy to throw away? The thought hit and I almost choked on it. *Am I that disgusting?* 🤢 No. I swallowed. Hard. The bond in my chest went cold and dead. I have no choice but to accept. I won’t cry. I won’t beg. I won’t let him have the last laugh. So I lifted my chin and made my voice steady.saying it out loud felt like swallowing glass but I did it anyway *"I accept your rejection, Toren Vale."* The words left my mouth and the last piece of me shattered. I didn’t wait for him to say anything else. I couldn’t. If I stayed one more second I’d beg. I’d cry. I’d fall apart at his feet. So I ran. Past him. Out his door. Down the hall. Tears were streaming now, hot and traitorous down my face. Broken. Useless. Rejected. That’s all I am. The bond in my chest felt like a wound someone poured salt into. It was dead. Cold. And it hurt more than any punch Liora ever gave me. I hit the back doors of the house and shoved them open. Rain slammed into me. Cold. Bitter. “Nyx,” I choked. “Please. Help me.” And that’s when it happened. Pain. Not the dull ache of scrubbing floors. Not the sting of a slap. This was different. Like every bone in my body was being ripped apart and rebuilt. I screamed. My back arched. My knees hit the mud. Claws burst from my fingers. Fur tore through my skin. My spine cracked, lengthened. My vision sharpened. My hearing doubled. For the first time in 18 years... I felt her. _Nyx._ She was beautiful. Black as midnight. Silver along her spine. Eyes like mine. Pale blue, but wild. She was tall. Strong. Muscles coiled under fur. Nothing “wretched” about her. She was power. She was rage. She was me. I’d never felt so whole. And I couldn’t control it. The wolf took over. She shot forward into the woods, paws pounding the earth. The curfew bell was still ringing behind me. I broke it. I broke every law. I didn’t mean to go this far. I just needed to run. To get away from the rejection. From Toren. But Nyx had other plans. The trees blurred. The scent of blood hit me. Fresh. Metallic. Thick. And then Nyx stopped dead. In the clearing ahead. At first I only saw the rain. The dark. The mist curling over the ground. Then I saw _it_. A shape. Hunched over something on the forest floor. It was tearing. Ripping. I heard it before I saw it. The wet, sickening sound of flesh giving way. Of bone snapping. My stomach turned. And in one violent motion, it yanked up. A head. Torn clean from the body. Blood sprayed the leaves, black in the moonlight. My breath caught in my throat. I gagged. Nyx whined low in my chest. That image. That sound. It burned into me. I knew it would live behind my eyes forever. The thing dropped the head. And slowly... It turned. I couldn’t see its face. The shadows clung to it like a second skin. Twisted. Wrong. Too many angles. But the eyes. God, the eyes. Two of them. Glowing. Pure red. Not wolf red. Not fire red. Like coals from hell. Like blood in the dark. They weren’t on the body anymore. They were on _me_. Piercing. Deep into my soul. Like it could see Nyx. See me. See every broken piece and know exactly where to hurt. The air went cold. Colder than when Alpha Kade walked in. My fur stood on end. Nyx’s hackles rose. A low growl rumbled in my chest but my legs were locked. I broke curfew. I led it right to me. I was supposed to be in the scullery. Safe. Invisible. Now I was in the woods. Alone. 18 and wolfed out for the first time. And the thing in the dark had just finished killing. And now it was looking at me like I was next. The red eyes blinked once. Slow. Nyx snarled. _Run or fight._ I didn’t know which one yet. The shadows shifted. ---
