JANE'S SCHEME

237 Words
Jane sat by the window of her bedroom, her fingers drumming against the armrest of her chair as she replayed the confrontation in her mind. Leah’s defiance, her confidence—it was unbearable. “She thinks she can just walk in and take control,” Jane muttered under her breath. “She doesn’t belong here anymore.” Her thoughts spiraled as she considered the implications of Leah’s return. If Leah uncovered the family’s secrets, it wouldn’t just destroy their father—it would ruin Jane’s carefully curated life. She needed to act. Picking up her phone, Jane dialed a number she hadn’t used in years. A gruff voice answered on the third ring. “Hello?” “It’s Jane,” she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. “I need a favor.” The man on the other end chuckled. “Haven’t heard from you in a while. What’s the job?” Jane’s lips curled into a sly smile. “Someone needs a reminder of where they belong. Discreetly, of course.” There was a pause, then a low whistle. “You’re playing a risky game, sweetheart. But for the right price…” “Money’s not an issue,” Jane interrupted. “Just handle it.” As she hung up, a sense of satisfaction washed over her. Leah had always been a problem, but this time, Jane would make sure she stayed gone—for good.
