The conversation went exactly how one would imagine after Lucas’ declaration.
A brief laugher from denial and confusion.
To a deathly long silence, followed by harsh words and raised voices.
Phillip watch it all across the hallway, far enough for no one to spot him but close enough that his wolf side could hear everything that was said.
His father was feelings were hurt, he refused to leave the pack. One moment his father would beg and bargain with Logan the next moment he would throw the past in Lucas’s face.
Phillip could tell that his father was desperately trying to do anything to dismiss the command.
But Lucas held his composure and with that being his decision.
Eventually, all Phillip’s father could do was throw anything he could reach, screaming for Lucas to leave his room, to leave him alone. Still Lucas held regal posture and walked out of the room with his head high.
Phillip ducked behind one of the nurse’s desk as Lucas enter the hallway unable to peel his eyes away.
It wasn’t like he wanted to just watch as his father was abandoned by his supposed friend but he just couldn’t find the words to defend his father.
Especially not after what he’d witnessed a few days ago.
The mere thought made his bones ache from the pure panic that nearly swallowed Phillip whole, making him shake from exhaustion.
It was already a lot to ask his body to stand there. So to push it further, Phillip needed to know what he was going to say and he needed to believe what he said was true.
But if he followed that mental rule, he had nothing to say.
Nothing to say but one thing.
“Alpha Lucas,” as soon as Phillip called his name Lucas’s found him as if he’d already known that Phillip was standing there.
Maybe he had.
“My dad’s everything is with the pack, he knows nothing else. Sending him like that will kill him. Please give him a mission, it doesn’t matter what because it’s better than nothing.”
Lucas’s cold expression softened as he took into the little one’s words.
“Let me think on it, little one. He’s not leaving the hospital bed any time soon so let’s talk about this after we’ve all just had some space and time to think.” He said before turning to leave and as he did a small shift caught Phillips eye.
“Good night, Alpha Lucas. Phillip said as he kept eye contact with Lucas’s lower half, needing to verify what he thought that he saw.
“Why does he have my father’s personal belongings?” Phillip said under his breath. He was sure that he’d recognize the little plastic bag tucked in the alphas side. He’d remembered seeing that bag in the guest chair of his own room.
“Mm, goodnight.” Lucas responded absentmindedly. That’s when Philip realized the rush in Lucas’s steps as he if was trying to avoid something.
This wasn’t like Lucas, Philip thought.
Lucas was a poised man. That was where Lucas differed from his father.
His father, was a young wolf who had had a child with his childhood sweetheart and is trying to do what’s best for the family that he made but is still growing up.
Philip understood this but he still knew that his father had plenty of learning to do, he still acted childishly and rashly. Kevin at times felt like a bigger brother to Philip, especially as Philip has gotten older.
Phillip has never told anyone but he’s always looked up to Lucas as a father figure.
As a child Philip would follow Alpha Lucas around, He would always step in his large shadow and would feel like he was safe from the world. Phillip knew Lucas’s shoulders to be big and broad suited for the world to rest on. His back was always straight and unwavering. His stride was always calm and sure.
So of course Phillip would notice the strange behavior of his alpha.
Because in that moment he reminded him of his dad.
“What are you planning uncle Lucas.” He whispered as he knelt down and leaned towards the wall. Lucas was definitely planning something and whatever it was was consuming his thoughts for Phillip to be able to stalk behind an alpha like prey without him noticing.
The hallways that Lucas used were empty and quiet. So no one was there who could’ve spotted Phillip and expose him. But it also made it harder to follow Lucas, at the pace he was going and staying quiet.
Phillip felt like every step was on eggshells. He was so focused on the need for stealth that he’d forgotten to breathe until dark spots started to cloud his vision.
Phillip was still tired from the incident and was moments away from exposing himself just so that he could take a break.
His calfs had began to shake and ache from the effort of keeping his weight even in his steps.
His back had began to tire from his knelt position.
And when Phillip would breathe, his shallow breaths were not enough for the strain he was putting on his tired body.
“Where are we going uncle Lucas? Can we please get there faster.” Phillip thought.
Meanwhile Lucas’s thoughts were anything but that simple.
“They threw a tree branch at him.” Lucas thought.
“They threw a tree branch across miles of water and hit their target…those alphas could’ve killed them all that night… no, no Lucas, you can’t think that way a pack is only as weak as their alpha. An alpha is only as strong as his will to be. If I think like that I will die.” Lucas was so deep in his thoughts, he was grateful for his alpha duties because it trained his body to remember the routes he’s taken when he wanted to avoid people.
He’d almost made it to the hospital garage without bumping into a single being.
“Am I really doing this? I’m the alpha of Onyx. What if I really die out there? They f*****g threw a tree branch and hit the target. I must be out of my mind. I don’t have a family to succeed me if I die, unlike Kevin. I don’t have a son lined up to take my place, like Kevin does either. An alpha doesn’t retire.” Lucas had arrived to the door that led to the garage. Instead of bursting through the door he paused for a moment.
“Goddess, please help me through this. I’m not ready to die.” He said with a sigh. It took him a moment to will himself to open the door, knowing that once he does that he can’t ever hesitate again.
In that short moment he let himself feel his fear, his doubts.
In that moment he let himself blame his fool of a brother.
For a moment he let himself regret never meeting his mate.
“Please forgive me my love. I know that my actions will also affect you too but I have to protect the family that I have or I never would’ve be worthy to meet you anyway.” And like that it was gone.
It left his spirit a little worn down but he used the soreness to remind him of why he can’t do that again.
When he entered the garage, he walked with calm even steps. His head held high as his eyes focused on a new target.
The bridge.
Lucas left the pack grounds by car, before changing his clothes.
He tied up his shoulder length hair and open the bag that held Kevin’s bloody clothes.
He had packed his essentials and threw them in the trunk when Kevin got out of surgery.
Also in the trunk was Phillip, who was almost begging Alpha Lucas to walk faster. When he heard lucas’s footsteps approaching the car trunk.
