“She won’t be. Pregnant, I mean.” Arc’s responded before revealing himself at doorway.
He’d felt that they were hiding something so he decided to pretend to leave.
“s**t, look what you did big mouth.” Cane grumble while smacking Leron on the shoulder.
“Dude, chill with the hitting. and what are you talking about Arc, I smelled her scent change.”
“Yeah but if she’s a test subject for those monsters, she won’t be pregnant. Or have you forgotten what the cleansing process.”
Both Cane and Leron growled in disgust from the horrific memories of what the scientists put them through.
“I’m sorry for your loss. But no baby can survive the cleansing. Just take it as small mercies and hope that our mate will be wise enough to hide the miscarriage and strong enough to continue on.”
Cane couldn’t hear anymore of what Arc was saying even it was the truth. He stormed out the room bumping into Arc as he left but the muscular giant didn’t seem phased.
But Cane was just getting started. “Damn it! What are we still standing here for? You two are one chisel away from carving out her tombstone instead of moving your ass!” Cane roared so loudly it felt like instead of being halfway down the hall, it felt like he was still standing next to the other two.
Arc ignored Cane and waited for Leron to respond seeing in his eyes that he needed to.
“What Leron, if you can’t talk to us who can you talk to?”
“A miscarriage isn’t a small mercy unless it’s an early miscarriage Arc. And even then… You just shouldn’t have said that. That was wrong.” Leron grumbled before following Cane.
Arc knew this, but it was job to be the heartless one. Now with them gone Arc took a moment before joining the other two.
He only needed a moment that’s all he ever allowed himself.
But in that moment he let himself feel. All the emotions he’d been ignoring came bubbling up his veins so fast it made him nauseous. The worry made it hard to breathe and for a moment Arc that he would’ve passed out.
His heart hurt for his mate and he wished for a moment that he still had her in his arms. He regretted falling asleep for last night, something told him to keep a close eye on his little mate but the sight of her beautiful naked body made him so stiff it hurt.
For a moment he remembered when her scent changed.
For a moment he let himself remember being proud.
For a moment he let himself regret being proud.
For a moment he let himself be angry that he has to regret being proud.
For a moment he let himself be angry, scared, frustrated, hopeful, doubtful, anxious.
Then nothing.
He emotions came and went so fast it felt like they left a scorch mark on his heart.
The pain grounded Arc.
So he moved forward like he always did, ignoring his shaking knees.
He moved past the moment.
Except, when he turned he was met with two very worried and confused faces.
“What the hell was that? It felt like you were dying. What did you do?”
Fuck, Arc forgot that we’re bonded now.
He didn’t have the energy to explain what happened so he tried to brush past them.
“Arc, talk to us. That wasn’t normal, you shouldn’t carry that on your own.” Leron pleaded.
But neither Cane or Leron had the heart to force the answer out of him so they let him pass.
When they returned upstairs, it was as if Estelle had become another person. Or more like returned to the person they knew before last night.
She was laughing with their father. Holding his hand as if she just couldn’t part with him. Holding his eye contact as if she saw the world in his eyes.
But the three alphas knew better, even though they didn’t like the scene in front of them, that’s all it was. An act.
“What a splendid idea honey!” She boasted. Their father noticed that they were in the room and waved a hand in an inviting gesture.
“Boys, come join us. Now that you’re done decorating, you should eat.”
The three alphas found their seat and summoned the same smile that Estelle had.
“Tell them, honey!” Estelle cheered.
Seth, chuckled at her excitement and nodded.
“Well, I have decided to submit Estelle into the cleaning so that you three can have an inside woman.”
Cane’s smile faltered.
“But she’s the lady of house. Why would…”Seth raised his hand to silence Cane.
“The lady of the house does what she needs to do for the greater good of the people. And it will serve another purpose. You see, I met a woman scientist this morning who will serve as my messenger. And this morning, Estelle’s jealousy almost killed my toy. While I appreciate the sentiment I can’t ignore the fact Estelle has lost her edge and has become to dependent on me. So She needs to go through the cleansing to find herself again.”
All three smiles disappeared as their alpha side came forward.
Cane was the first to speak again.“Father, maybe you have forgotten what the cleansing was like for us because you were on the other side of the glass then but it’s not like taking a shower. It’s complete isolation for a year, you’re strapped to a wall, tube fed and given a diaper to relieve yourself. And when do they wash you. When. They wash you with pressurized cold water because they don’t want to touch you. You are constantly shown pictures of cages and test subjects and being told to forget everything you knew before. Everything. Every. Thing?” His voice lowered as his thoughts drifted off for a moment. And most of people at the table knew where his thoughts went to.
But Cane had said enough anyway.
Seth’s lighthearted mood had full shifted into annoyance.
“You promised to never bring up my past again. Yes, I may have been on the other side of the glass then but don’t forget that I was left behind all those years ago as well. Since then I have shared the dark history of our people. I have led our people. And now you want to throw my past in my face to tell me that I don’t understand!”
Seth voice shook with anger as his hand slammed down against the table.
“Logan, I think you should leave, your task is completed.” Estelle said softly, breaking the intense silence.
But neither Cane or Seth seemed to care about if he left or not.
As Logan left Cane continued.
“I never said you weren’t one of us. But I am saying that what you are asking of your mate is not something you should be laughing about. I would’ve never guessed by the smiles I saw when I came into this room that you were going to propose this. But of course I know what you have done since the scientist left us as unintelligent monsters with unstable, unregulated aggression levels if you had not taught us how to speak and read we would not be what we are today. Which is why our people built this estate to what it is, for you and the elders. Why we call you father. Why we held a kings selection during the hunt, so that you could continue on if the rest of us didn’t survive it. A gift you now want to throw back into our faces-“
“I’m not throwing her away, Cane. No, don’t say it like that.” Seth, sighed with his ego rubbed. Seth fell back into his patronizing tone, and spoke to Cane as if he was explaining friendship to a child.
“I am not throwing her away, I’m just making use of my circumstances. Maybe it’s because I experimented on myself with the remaining alpha gene instead of the delta gene that you had. But Estelle and I aren’t compatible. I adore her, I do but I’m a leader with no heir. As a leader, I must think of the future and that scientist’s biology might be more fruitful. Please understand, Estelle will still be the lady of the house. And when the w***e has served her purpose, Estelle will be a mother. But also as leader I must help our people stay strong. And Estelle has gone soft, what if she can’t keep her title against this new batch of woman the scientists are making if she isn’t prepared. What would you have me do then?”
