Dalia-
I entered my sister’s office the next day at her request. I had a horrible night's sleep. I kept dreaming of my boyfriend Dino hanging from a cliff next to Maximus, and I couldn’t figure out who to save. So, I kept waking up out of that horrible dream. Wait, did I mention my boyfriend? Yes, I have a boyfriend named Dino. He is a vampire I met once I was able to venture out of my reclusive life on the mountainside with just my mother. He is this hot, bad boy vampire. With the looks and bad boy charm of James Dean with longer hair. The fashion style of Lenny Kravitz. He has been a wonderful boyfriend to me. He was by my side when my mother passed. He has always been with me except when he had to return to his home to visit his dad. That was when my dad decided to stage the sneak attack on my sister. Once Dino found out, it came right away. He just arrived a little after I gained my freedom from my sister. We have been staying here while I figure out what is next for my life. Dino and Maximus really seem to hate each other. There is no other way to describe it.
So, imagine my confusion when I keep dreaming of them both. So I have been steering clear of Maximus. I know he can read my thoughts sometimes, and I truly can’t trust myself around him. He seems to speak to some inner side of me that I have no control over. I have come to find distance is better.
“Hey sis, thanks for meeting us. I have the elder witches here to meet with you. Dalia, this is Beatrice and Euclid from the Holy Mountains.” Mira introduces us as I smile to both ladies. I thought I was coming to meet a pair of old women with a book of spells. These are two women who look in their mid thirties. They are dressed in business attire. Hair pulled back in a bun, you ask? Nope. One has a blunt cut short bob. The other has locs in her hair and has them pinned up into a messy bun. They look like two hot librarians.
“Hello, it is nice to meet you both.” I tell them, taking a seat across from them. Just then, there is a knock at the door, and I swear he enters in slow motion. Every unmated female in the room watches him. His large frame wearing a brown tweed three-piece suit. Seeing him in a suit, I forget how to breathe for a moment. He walks with the grace of the lifeguards on that show that run in slow motion so you can appreciate their gifts.
“Hello ladies. Queen Mira. I am sorry for the delay. I had to come from an event, and I was the guest of honor.” Maximus strolls in looking briefly at me then to the other ladies.
“Not a problem, Maximus. You are right on time. We all just went over introductions.” Mira tells him as he opens his suit jacket and takes a seat on a large sofa that he really fills all alone.
“Nice to meet you both! I have heard a lot about you, Maximus, and you as well, Dalia. I could not wait to return here so we could see what we could do to help you, Dalia.” Beatrice tells us as she stands with Euclid joining her.
“If we could have you stand in the middle of the floor. So, we can get a reading on you. We need to try and figure out who put the dark magic on you and why.” The ladies stand on either side of me chanting. I try and focus on the words they are saying. It’s a special language with Latin words mixed in. I pick up a few words here and there that I recognize from classes I took. This went on for a while before we stopped all together.
“So can you fix me?” I say half joking.
“Well first off, Dalia, there is nothing to fix. You seem to have a bubble around you of sorts. It is some shield that is keeping a part of you hidden. I have called on all the powers in my arsenal, and I think I know why my witch power is limited. This spell is a superpower that was put on you a while back. This isn’t new. It’s just now that you are around others. Others that have the gifts to see it.” Euclid explains.
“We also need to see what could be keeping this shield in place. Is there anything you eat or drink regularly? Are there certain vitamins you take?” Beatrice follows up.
“No, I have nothing I eat on a regular basis. No vitamins or medicines at all?” I reply.
“Hmm, something is keeping your shield in place. If it isn’t ingested, then maybe someone is keeping the spell active by updating it when needed. From this point, the only people who could help you would be the great elders that frequent the Black River Pack. They have a mixture of species there, but the majority are werewolves. Including their Luna Briar, who is the Omni-wolf. Maybe her powers will be able to see through the shield better than our eyes can.” Euclid finishes up.
“Oh, so could we not just use the vampire elders? They too frequent here from what I am told.” I ask.
“Well child, what would be the point in that. We know you are a vampire. It’s the other part we need to figure out.” Beatrice laughs softly.
“Oh no, I am all vampire. My mom was a vampire, and so was my dad. We did bloodwork already, proving I am Queen Mira’s sister.” I remind them.
“Well, you could be vampire but have a side that is not a vampire. Or maybe your parents were not full vampire, and you got more of the recessive gene from them both. Either way, something is being held back within you, and we need to find out why.” Euclid tells us.
“Could it be something that could harm her?” Mira asks.
“No, I don’t pick up any negative energy within her.” Beatrice speaks to my sister. I exhale, happy to hear I am still not a threat in any subconscious way. If I were, I would leave here right away. There is no way I would endanger my sister, my nieces and nephew, or any of the coven members. I may be new here, but these are all my family. I will do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Even if I have to self-isolate for the rest of my life.
“That being said, if you were to visit, I would feel safe knowing that Maximus is part of your travel team. I trust him with the lives of my babies. So, I definitely trust him with my sister. If you are available, Maximus? I would appreciate you taking my sister to the Black River pack. I will speak with Alpha Ronan to let them know.” Mira asks Maximus, and I am as shocked as he is. Of all the security, I can still understand the need to trust a small window of people.
“I can make the trip and accompany her everywhere she is needed, my queen.” Maximus answers while I look over at him. Totally shocked that he would simply answer my sister without even looking at me to ask. No one actually has asked me how I feel about this.
“Uhm, Maximus don’t you have missions that you need to run?” I ask, not wanting to keep him from his job.
“Yes, there are missions, and there are also other operatives like myself that can handle the job just as effectively.” Maximus tells me.
“Well, I do appreciate the offer, but sis, Dino and I can make this trip?” I begin. I swear I hear Maximus growl.
“Yes, you and anyone can make the trip. But I am requesting someone who is a known warrior to escort you.” Mira gives me a knowing look as I accept the request of the queen. I mean, it will only take a few days total for this trip.
“Wait, if you have Maximus here, then does that mean there is harm for me? A threat of some kind?”
“We don’t know enough for that to be answered. But I look at it like, if someone is trying to suppress something within you, then it has to be for a reason. Someone feels you possess a threat. I know for a fact that I trust Maximus to keep you safe. That is the only option for me, and I really hope you trust me on this.” Mira says. “Also, this conversation will not go beyond this room. Am I making myself clear?”
“Sure, thing, sis. I hear you.” I tell her. I get it. If someone wants me to remain as I am, then I would be a threat if I were to figure out what this wall is for and what it is hiding. “But excuse me, witches. I have a question. Why do I need to go see werewolf elders?”
“Well, sweetie, what I pick up on is of werewolf origin. If I am correct, then the elders in the Black River Pack will be the most equipped to help you.”
“Wait, you think I am part werewolf?” I say while suppressing a laugh. I mean, that would be amazingly funny. Both of my parents were vampires. I still don’t know how this is a thing, yet here we are.
“I am confident that what is within you has some lineage of the werewolf gene. That is what I can pick up on. So, I have sent word to the elders there. They can meet with you in the pack house and help get answers that you deserve.” Beatrice tells me. I smile appreciating how reassuring she is with her vision.
“One more thing. Be careful with whom you connect with. Make sure this is on a need-to-know basis.” Euclid warns me. It is like a bucket of cold water being splashed on my face. What could be so damning that would make my dormant side a threat? If I am some part werewolf, could that be why I don’t crave blood?
“I understand. Thank you, ladies, for all your help. I guess I should go get packed. When should we leave?” I ask.
“Tomorrow morning, Bright and early.” Maximus speaks up. I give him a nod as head out of the office. I feel him following me right away. Usually, Maximus can move like a shadow. Not making a sound. But right now, I can feel he wants me to know he is there on purpose.
“Is there something else, Maximus? I pause at the elevator. Not turning around.
“Yes, I just wanted to apologize for the forest yesterday, and I want you to know I will behave with the utmost of respect. You will not have to worry about my actions from this point on.” He tells me, and a part of me is for sure disappointed. That is just a small part of it, though. I respect him much more than anything.
“Thank you. I appreciate it.” I smile in the mirrored reflection of the elevator doors as they open.
