The days after the leak were a blur of tension and strategy. Damian was busy with crisis management, battling to keep the damage from the image of him and Ava in check. The media frenzy had already started to spin out of control, with rumors turning into headlines and speculation running rampant. Cross Tech's credibility hung in the balance, and Damian was doing all he could to keep it from disintegrating. But all the while, he couldn't shake the persistent concern that the powers behind this were playing a long game one which had only just started.
Ava, however, had been thrust into the limelight in ways she never thought she would be. The art community had started treating her like an enigma and a sensation. There were interview invitations, gallery show invitations, and press conference invitations pouring into her inbox. But it lacked depth. It wasn't the kind of attention that she desired. She did not want to be the center of gossip particularly when it came to Damian.
No matter the increasing pressure, Ava couldn't help but think about him. Damian's enigmatic warning still rang in her ears. "Stay away from me. For your own good." But she couldn't help but stay. Not after everything he'd told her.
The air was charged when Damian and Ava saw each other later that week, this time in a secluded café from the outside gaze of the public. Dimly lit, with long shadows cast upon the floor, they felt a sense of privacy that felt like a fleeting reprieve.
Ava had hardly sipped her coffee, her fingers drumming against the cup as she observed Damian on the other side of the table. He'd barely spoken since they sat down, his characteristic calm replaced by a tension in the shoulders.
Damian looked at her, his eyes wary but drawn with an unmistakable vulnerability. "You shouldn't have come, Ava. The situation is deteriorating. It's not just a matter of the media anymore."
"I'm not going anywhere, Damian," she whispered, looking at him. "I'm not scared of the press. I'm scared of you pushing me away again. You can't keep me safe from everything if you push me away."
He rubbed his hand across his face, obviously conflicted. "I'm not trying to exclude you. But my world everything around me is risky. You don't know what I'm up against. If you remain in it, you'll be hurt."
Ava moved her hand across the table, her fingers coming to rest on his. "I'm already here. Whether you like it or not, I'm not leaving."
The gravity of what she was saying weighed on them. Damian recognized she was correct. She had already glimpsed more of him than he cared to admit, and even though he wished to keep her at arms' length, the reality was, she was already involved in this battle. He had to come up with a method of having her realize this, of being able to inform her of just how far-reaching the danger was.
Before he could answer, his phone vibrated with an incoming message. He looked at the screen, and his expression turned dark.
Olivia: We have an issue. The board is demanding answers. We need to meet urgently.
Damian did not even glance at Ava as he stuffed the phone into his pocket. "I must go," he said, his tone tight. "But I will be in touch. I will sort this, Ava. I promise."
Ava did not release his hand. "Don't make a promise you can't keep, Damian. Just. just take care."
Damian gave her hand one squeeze before standing up, his face relaxing for just an instant. "I always am," he said, but there was no truth in his words.
When he walked out of the café, Ava observed him go, her mind reeling in a sea of concern and resolve. She had no clue what the next step would be, but this one thing was certain: she wasn't going to let Damian tackle this by himself. He had already let her in too far, maybe and now there was no return.
Damian made history to the Cross Tech boardroom and saw the entire team waiting. The air was tense, the board members exchanging nervous looks. Olivia stood at the top of the table, her eyes cold with worry as she spoke to the room.
"We've taken it on the chin from every direction," Olivia started, her voice firm but with a hint of exasperation. "Not just is the media coverage ramping up, but there has been more aggressive questioning from investors. They're badmouthing the leadership of the company, and they're leveraging this scandal to delegitimize your role, Damian."
The allusion to the photo and what it might mean had left Cross Tech in a precarious position. Should the public become aware that Damian's private life was unstable, it could be bad news for the image and stock of the tech giant.
One of the members of the board, a tall woman in her late 40s with pointed features and icy eyes, leaned forward. "Damian, this is bigger than a personal matter now. Your affair with this artist Ava Harper has put the whole company at risk. You have to move quickly to deal with this crisis."
Damian's jaw clenched. He had anticipated this he knew they would dwell on the optics. But he was not going to sacrifice Ava. She did not deserve to be a pawn in this game.
"I will take care of it," he said, his tone low but firm. "But I'm not going to make Ava the sacrificial lamb. If anyone attempts to make this personal with her, they'll have to deal with me."
The room went quiet. The board members looked at one another, visibly surprised by his adamant defense of Ava. Olivia intervened, her voice steady but assertive.
"I understand you want to defend her, Damian. But we have to have a plan. This is no longer a public relations matter. There are individuals involved. Individuals who know too much."
Damian's thoughts whirled as he sorted through Olivia's words. This went beyond the media now. Someone, somewhere, was playing them and Ava like pawns in an even bigger game. The stakes were more critical than ever before.
"We'll take care of it," Damian said at last, his voice firm. "I'll get us ahead of this. But I need everyone to be on the same page. No distractions."
The board hesitated in agreement, but Damian was aware that this was not the end of it. He had more questions than answers, and now he needed to locate those who were manipulating things from behind the scenes.
That night, later on, as Ava was in her studio, the gravity of the situation weighed heavily upon her. She had been attempting to immerse herself in her art, but each brushstroke seemed insignificant. Her phone vibrated, and she read the message.
Damian: We have to talk. See me at the office tomorrow. I'll clarify everything.
Ava's heart pounded. She knew this was inevitable. Whatever Damian was keeping whatever he had been hiding from her it was finally going to be told.
But gazing out at the city skyline, she could not shake the impression that something more sinister was closing in on her. She had ventured into a realm she did not know, and the deeper she descended, the more impossible it would be to turn back.
The pieces were finally falling into place, but with each discovery, the perils around them intensified.
And the nearer they came, the tighter the threads seemed to come undone.
