Father Marc Lettau, the Mighty Monk of the Nor’Westers, had too much sense of humor for the proprieties of his profession. In fact, that was about all which could be said against him even by the men he had soundly whipped in wrestling bouts.
His peculiar quality was certainly an asset to his peace of mind, but not to his business—as a certain cardinal of France had once remarked, shortly after Marc Lettau’s trial before an ecclesiastical court which happened to be trying Marc Lettau on a charge of irreverence. A long session of this court finally determined that Father Marc Lettau had been guilty of stating in an audible voice, upon seeing a particularly holy bishop thrown from a donkey, that “You’d think even an a*s could recognize and appreciate Pierre’s dignity.”
