The next morning, Zyro woke to the sound of his phone buzzing incessantly. Groaning, he fumbled for it, squinting at the screen. A text from Bron:
"Meet me at the old amphitheater. 1 hour. Bring snacks. Preferably not lightning-conducing ones."
Zyro chuckled, remembering yesterday's soda can incident. As he got ready, he couldn't help but wonder what new, probably life-threatening adventure awaited him today.
An hour later, Zyro arrived at the dilapidated amphitheater on the outskirts of town, a bag of chips tucked under his arm. To his surprise, Bron wasn't alone. Three other teenagers stood with him, engaged in what looked like a heated discussion.
"Ah, there's our spark plug!" Bron called out, waving Zyro over. "Come meet your new classmates!"
Zyro approached cautiously. "Classmates?"
A girl with fiery red hair and eyes that seemed to shimmer like heat waves stepped forward. "So this is Zeus Junior, huh? Not very impressive." She smirked, a small flame dancing across her fingertips.
"Play nice, Aria," Bron warned. "Zyro, meet Aria, daughter of Hephaestus. She's got a bit of a fiery temper, if you couldn't tell."
Aria rolled her eyes but gave Zyro a nod.
Next, a tall, athletic guy with sea-green eyes offered his hand. "I'm Kai, son of Poseidon. Don't mind Aria, she's all bark and no bite. Well, mostly."
As Zyro shook Kai's hand, he felt a cool, refreshing sensation, like a sea breeze on a hot day.
The last member of the group, a petite girl with silvery blonde hair and eyes that seemed to change color, gave Zyro a shy smile. "I'm Luna, daughter of Artemis. It's nice to meet you, Zyro."
Zyro's head was spinning. "Wait, you're all...like me? Demigods?"
Bron clapped him on the shoulder. "Welcome to Demigod 101, kid. I figured it was time you met some of your peers. You're not in this alone."
As the group settled into the amphitheater, Bron explained that he'd been training young demigods for years, helping them control their powers and navigate the dangerous world they'd been born into.
Over the next few hours, Zyro watched in awe as his new classmates demonstrated their abilities. Aria conjured intricate structures of flame, Kai manipulated water from a nearby stream with fluid grace, and Luna... well, Luna seemed to fade in and out of visibility, blending with the shadows and light.
During a break, Kai pulled Zyro aside. "So, lightning boy, how're you holding up? It's a lot to take in, I know."
Zyro sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah, it's... overwhelming. One minute I'm worrying about math tests, the next I'm fighting mythological monsters and meeting the children of gods. How do you deal with it all?"
Kai's eyes twinkled with mischief. "Oh, you know, lots of deep breathing and the occasional underwater screaming session. Works wonders."
Zyro laughed, feeling some of the tension leave his body. As they rejoined the group, he caught Luna looking at him, a slight blush coloring her cheeks when their eyes met. She quickly looked away, but Zyro felt a warmth spread through his chest that had nothing to do with his lightning powers.
The peaceful moment was shattered by a bone-chilling howl. Everyone froze, their eyes darting to Bron.
"Hellhounds," he growled, his jovial demeanor replaced by grim determination. "Looks like Hades isn't done with us yet."
As if on cue, massive black dogs with glowing red eyes emerged from the shadows surrounding the amphitheater. Zyro counted at least a dozen, all snarling and snapping.
"Stay together!" Bron shouted, electricity crackling around his fists. "Remember your training!"
What followed was a chaotic blur of elemental fury. Zyro found himself back-to-back with Aria, his lightning complementing her fire as they fended off the attacking beasts. Kai and Luna worked in tandem, his water whips and her shadow manipulation creating a formidable defense.
But as the battle raged on, Zyro noticed something odd. The hellhounds seemed to be focusing most of their attention on Luna, who was starting to look pale and drained.
"Luna, watch out!" Zyro cried, seeing a hellhound leap towards her unprotected back. Without thinking, he threw himself between them, hands outstretched. Lightning erupted from his palms with more force than he'd ever managed before, disintegrating the hellhound mid-pounce.
As the last of the monsters fell, an eerie silence descended on the amphitheater. Zyro turned to Luna, his heart racing. "Are you okay?"
She nodded, her ever-changing eyes wide with a mix of gratitude and something else Zyro couldn't quite place. "Thank you," she whispered.
"Hate to break up the moment," Aria called out, her voice tinged with suspicion, "but does anyone else think it's weird that those mutts seemed really interested in Little Miss Moonbeam over here?"
All eyes turned to Luna, who suddenly looked very uncomfortable.
Bron stepped forward, his expression unreadable. "Luna? Is there something you want to tell us?"
Luna's gaze darted between her friends, lingering on Zyro for a moment before dropping to the ground. "I... I'm so sorry," she said, her voice barely audible. "They weren't after me. They were after this."
From within her jacket, she pulled out a small, glowing orb. Its surface swirled with what looked like galaxies in miniature.
Bron's eyes widened in shock. "Is that...?"
Luna nodded miserably. "The Cosmic Sphere. I stole it from Olympus."
A stunned silence fell over the group. Zyro felt as if the ground had dropped out from under him. Luna, the shy, sweet girl he'd been drawn to, was a thief? But why?
As if reading his thoughts, Luna looked up, tears in her eyes. "I can explain everything. But we need to leave, now. Because if Hades knows I have this, it won't be long before all of Olympus comes looking for us."
Bron ran a hand over his face, suddenly looking every bit his immortal age. "Alright, kids. Looks like Demigod 101 just turned into Demigod Crisis Management. Everyone in the truck. Now."
As they piled into Bron's battered pickup, Zyro found himself seated next to Luna. Despite everything, he felt an inexplicable urge to comfort her. "Hey," he said softly, "whatever's going on, we'll figure it out together, okay?"
Luna gave him a weak smile, her hand brushing against his. A jolt that had nothing to do with his lightning powers ran through Zyro.
As Bron peeled out of the amphitheater parking lot, the sky darkened ominously. Zyro couldn't shake the feeling that his life had just gotten a whole lot more complicated. But looking around at his new friends – and yes, he still considered Luna a friend, despite everything – he realized he wouldn't have it any other way.
Whatever storm was coming, they'd face it together. After all, that's what demigods do.
