Derrick was done, he needed a break from all of this. His uncle had barged into his office and was once again harping on him about the attacks. He still wanted them to continue relentlessly, forget the repercussions and get the answers they needed. Without a word to his uncle, he got up and walked away. He went straight to the area his patrols met at and joined Jared. “Hey man, I need to clear my head. Are you heading out on a patrol?” Derrick questioned. “Yeah, we’re going to patrol the western border where some of the rogues have been sighted. You in?” This was perfect, a fight with some rogues who dared cross his borders would be a great way to let out his frustrations, and the run would relax his wolf. Shifting ahead of his men, his wolf quickly took over and had him running west at his max speed. He didn’t know what was making his wolf react this way, but he knew to trust his wolf.
Within minutes, he was at the border, and then he heard it. Multiple wolves going after something, but what? His wolf was on edge fighting him to keep going. Something was out there, and he needed to find out what. Letting his wolf guide him, and knowing his team would follow, he crossed the border. He had barely made it across the border when he saw them and froze. The most beautiful white wolf was being surrounded by no less than fifteen rogues. He knew he needed to help her, but he was captivated by her sheer beauty and the way she moved. She was holding her own, snapping at anyone who dared enter the small circle they had created around her. She paced in circles, never letting one stay at her back for too long. Then suddenly they all attacked, coming at her from multiple angles at once.
He watched as the white wolf threw two off of her in seconds and had her mouth around another one’s throat. She had the neck broken and bleeding within seconds. Still frozen in place, he saw his men join the fight, attacking the rogues. He could see Jared out of the corner of his eye kill two without much effort, but he couldn’t take his eyes off of the white wolf. When one bit her hind leg, and she howled in pain, he immediately moved. He ran straight for the offending wolf and jumped onto his back, pinning him under his large frame. Quickly he let his canines sink into the neck of his prey. His wolf killed two more who came near her as quickly as he did the first. He didn’t understand why he was acting so protective of this wolf; did he know her from somewhere? Was she a friend of his sister’s maybe? No that couldn’t be it she didn’t smell familiar at all; she was definitely an outsider probably a rogue. Within minutes, all fifteen of the rogues were dead and Jared had his sights on the white wolf.
As Jared stalked towards her, Derrick jumped, blocking his path. He wouldn’t let any of his men hurt her. Crouching low, he let out a menacing growl warning his men. Jared shifted on site. “What the hell, man? You’re going to attack me, I’m your best friend and Beta.” When Derrick growled again, Jared continued. “OK OK, I get it, we won’t hurt her. Everyone back up. How about you escort her to the cells yourself, and we’ll figure out what’s going on?” Derrick suddenly shifted. “There’s no way in hell you’re putting her in the cells. You can forget that idea right now.” Turning to face the white wolf, who was standing defiantly behind him, he spoke slowly. “I’m Derrick, Alpha of the Dark Moon pack. You’re safe now. I see your bag over there; can you shift and get dressed for me.” When she didn’t move, he continued, “Please, I just want to make sure you’re not injured too badly. My pack house is nearby, and I can carry you there. I’ll have a doctor check on you to ensure you’re ok.” Still, she remained silent, then suddenly she collapsed.
Derrick quickly ran over and checked her for a pulse. Finding her heartbeat was strong, he lifted her, cradling her into him. “Get her bag and follow me.” He told Jared. He walked slowly and carefully as he walked back to his pack lands. He was initially going to take her to the pack hospital, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. With Jared still following him, he walked into his pack house and up to the alpha’s floor. He headed down towards his suite and stopped in front of the one across from his. He nodded towards it, so Jared would open the door for him. “Go get the pack physician for me, send him here straight away. I don’t care what he’s doing.” Without so much as a word, Jared left to follow orders. This particular suite was actually the Luna suite, but he didn't care. It was the closest to his that wasn't being used.
Derrick set his unknown beauty down gently on the bed. He had so many questions for her. He needed to know who she was and where she came from. Looking at her bag, he knew he could probably find some answers in it. That felt wrong though. He didn’t like the thought of invading her privacy. His wolf was drawn to her on some primal level, like she belonged to him. Like she was in fact his white wolf. He sat beside her and began rubbing her fur, looking at the still bleeding hind leg. The bleeding had slowed though, which was good. It didn’t take long for Jared and Alfred, the pack physician, to walk in. Alfred immediately started looking over her for injuries and listening to her heart. “What happened to her?” He mused. Unable to speak while trying to control his wolf, who did not appreciate another man touching her, Jared told the doctor about the fight. It didn’t take long for Alfred to announce she was ok and leave. Jared tried staying behind, telling Derrick it was his job to protect his Alpha, but Derrick refused. He laid down beside the wolf and pressed his body into hers. He quickly fell asleep cocooned into the most delicious scent he had ever smelt.
When he woke up, it was daylight. Looking at the bedside clock, he realized he had slept for fourteen hours. It was morning now, and even if he didn’t want to, he had work to do. He reluctantly got up, and went to his room to shower, change and head to his office. As soon as he sat down at his desk his heart began racing. His wolf was too on edge being away from the white wolf. Grabbing his laptop and cellphone, he headed into her room. He texted Jared that he was working from there and everyone except Jared should leave him alone. He didn’t want to bother the white wolf. Any pack business that needed to be addressed should go through Jared first. As Beta any time Derrick was unavailable, Jared was in charge. He sat on the couch and tried to focus, but his mind and eyes kept wondering back at the still sleeping wolf. He looked over at her and studied her beautiful form. She was still bloody from the battle, red splotches darkening her snowy form. She was like his polar opposite. He was completely black while she was pure white. She was almost as large as his own wolf, which was impressive he was larger than most due to his strong Alpha blood. He got up and walked into the private bath for her room and grabbed a washcloth. Wetting it he went back to her and began washing the blood away. He told himself that this was so he could see the wounds better, but he knew he was just making excuses for himself.
Two days later, she was still sleeping, and he was getting more and more anxious. Alfred had been by every day to check on her and ensured Derrick she would be just fine. Her body was healing her wounds, and she just needed rest. He said she would wake up when she was ready. And Derrick hated every second of this agonizing worry. He hadn’t left her room since coming back in with his laptop. He even had his meals delivered to him there and showered in her private bath with the door open, listening out for any sign she was awakening. Jared and Alfred had been the only people granted entrance as well. Jared came by daily to go over the morning debriefing that usually happened in his office, as well as bringing his meals and clean clothes. His uncle had tried multiple times to come in and speak to him, much to Jared’s annoyance. Derrick didn’t care what his uncle needed though; he had ordered pack business go through Jared so that’s who his uncle needed to speak with if it was anything pack related. If his uncle wanted something personal, he could wait. Derrick had no intention of leaving this room until she was up and healthy. She was his top priority now.
