Chapter Four
A simple life lesson I should have kept close is to be careful who you trust.
Daniel and Adam were talking about their college lives. They were basically catching up. My phone rang on the kitchen counter.
It was Leo calling.
I picked up my phone to answer the call.
“Hello,” I said.
“Hey Elena, I have something important I need to tell you. Could we meet up?” he replied.
I hesitated at first.
He noticed and said, “Come on, Elena, just a few hours of your time, and I promise I will make it worth your while.”
I replied, “ Okay, let me just change and meet you outside.”
“I am already outside your gate and now in your driveway,” he said.
“Okay, give me a second,” I replied.
I cut the call, left my phone on the counter, and headed upstairs, leaving my brothers to catch up.
I fixed my hair and changed into a pair of blue shorts and a basketball t- shirt with some sneakers.
When I came downstairs, I found Leo exchanging greetings with Daniel and Adam as if they knew each other.
“What’s going on here? Do you guys know each other?” I asked.
Daniel replied, “ Yeah, we usually meet up in the elite society groups for academics.”
Adam said, “ How do you guys know each other?”
Adam’s expression was suddenly serious.
I replied, “ Mum actually introduced us to each other.”
Daniel smirked and replied, “ Of course she did, that shady woman.” he added, “Weren't you actually a lesbian at some point?”
I replied, “Choosing not to date doesn't mean I was a lesbian. I just wasn’t ready.”
Leo looked at me and smirked and said, “Well, I am here now.”
He gestured to me to take his hand. I walked towards him and took his hand, as he kissed my cheek gently.
Adam said with his tone cold and serious expression, “Don’t take long and be back home in time for the gathering and our parents' arrival.”
I replied, “I will be back soon.”
We left and drove off in Leo’s car.
“You look beautiful,” Leo said.
I replied, “ Thank you, you look good too. So what is so important that it could not wait?”
He smiled at me and said, “ You will see.”
We arrived at Leo’s house. He packed his car in the driveway and hurried to open my door.
He held my hand as I stepped out of the car.
Leo's kind gestures weren’t surprising. He always sounded like he was flirting with me, and I, on the other hand, tried not to take him seriously. To me, we were purely Platonic but close friends who hung out from time to time.
We went behind his house and into a lovely garden.
In front of us, there was a picnic spot, which was beautifully decorated and had so many different types of fruits and food.
I said, “What's going on, Leo?”
We reached the picnic spot, and he pulled out a Wilson Rf 01 Pro Classic and a Head Racquet racket. They are among the best tennis rackets and are expensive.
He said,“ I know how much you love tennis, and seeing how worn out your rackets are, I decided to get you some customized and your name printed on them in bold and cursive.”
I smiled and went straight into his arms, hugging him.
Leo was always thoughtful and always noticed everything without me asking, but my heart has only ever yearned for one person.
He pulled back a bit, and one hand held my cheek. He looked into my eyes.
“I have waited for months, just waiting for the right time to finally tell you how I feel about you. Elena, I want you so so bad. I am willing to do anything to make you mine.”
He leaned in and kissed me.
He pulled me so close that I could feel his cloth against mine, wrapping his hands around my waist, holding me so tightly.
For some reason, I liked it.
He pushed the food away, creating enough room for us to lie down.
I lay down on the picnic cloth, and he was on top of me as we continued to kiss.
He then started to kiss my neck so gently.
He whispered in my ear, “I am madly in love with you, Elena.”
And at that moment, I realized the person on top of me wasn’t Adam. It may have felt good in the moment, but I wasn’t about to lose my virginity to Leo. I promised myself that only one man would take my virginity, and that would be the man I had loved since childhood.
I pulled away.
He asked, “ Did I do something wrong?”
I pushed him away to the side and said, “I am sorry, but I can’t do this.”
I got up and walked away, leaving everything behind and not looking back.
Leo shouted, “Elena, wait!” he added, “ At least let me drop you off at home.”
I walked away even faster.
When I was out of his estate, I got on a taxi heading home.
I thought to myself of how caring Leo had always been, but being with Leo meant forgetting about Adam. But what would be the harm in that when Adam didn't even seem to feel the same way towards me?
I wasn’t sure if I could truly let go of Adam.
When I got home, the staff were decorating the estate and the house. I went upstairs, ignoring Daniel, who seemed to want to hold a conversation with me.
I got to my room and took a shower. Thinking of how I would face Leo at tonight's gathering. He was obviously going to be in attendance because of his family’s status in society and because he was my father’s business associate.
I got out of the shower and decided to be the jewel of the evening, maybe then Adam would notice me.
I wore a red dress with diamonds all over my cleavage area, and my cleavage was slightly exposed, strapless, and had a slit all the way to my thigh. Gold jewelry on my neck and earrings hanging on my ears, and black open high heels. My hair was tied into a high ponytail to give off that sexy look, and my makeup was soft glam.
There was a knock on the door.
“Come in,” I said.
It was Harper and Vivienne.
Vivienne said, “Oouu….someone’s on fire today.”
Harper said, “ Fire is an understatement. You look stunning.”
I smiled and replied, “You both look amazing, too.”
Vivienne said, “So, tell me how the gala was last night? You just disappeared.”
Harper said, “ We will all catch up later. The guests are starting to arrive, and tonight you will both meet my boyfriend.”
We headed downstairs.
Right when I entered the room, there she was — my mom.
“Mom!” I said.
“Elena,” she replied.
I went towards her and hugged her.
“So,” I teased, pulling back, “how was the vacation, Mother?”
She smiled and said, “It was amazing. But you, on the other hand, look incredible tonight. You finally took my advice and decided to be the star of the night.”
I smiled at her.
Behind me came my father, his hands stretched wide as we hugged.
He said,” How was home without us? ”
“It felt too silent. Good to have you home,” I replied.
Adam and Daniel came down the stairs together, greeting our parents easily with hugs and smiles.
Daniel said, “ Elena, is that you? From behind, I thought you were someone else. I almost made you my girlfriend for the night.”
I replied, “Oh, really, what happened to Stacy?”
We laughed.
Adam said, looking at me calmly, “You look beautiful.”
I replied softly, “Thank you.”
He looked back at me, staring at my hand for longer than usual.
He said, “ Have you always had that chain on your wrist?”
I replied, “ Yeah, I usually never take it off. Don’t you remember it?”
Surprisingly
Harper came towards us. Harper stood near Adam, who held her hand.
Adam said, “ Mum, Dad. This is Harper, my girlfriend.”
The word girlfriend made my head spin. How could Harper, one of my close friends, be with the only man I have ever loved? She knew exactly how I felt about him and still went ahead to date him.
Mr. Ashford said, “It's a pleasure to meet you, Harper. You are always welcome.”
He stretched out his hand to shake hers.
Mum said, “It's lovely to meet you. How long have you two been together? “
Harper replied, smiling, “We have been together for 6 months now.”
Daniel said, “ 6 months, isn't that the longest you have been in a relationship, Adam?”
Adam replied, “I guess there’s just something about her,” he said while looking at her, as though she was everything to him.”
Mum said, “ Aren’t you one of Elena’s friends?”
I looked at Harper with so much hate in my eyes and said, “ No, I have no idea who she is, so we are definitely not friends.”
I walked out.
Harper knew all my secrets. If there is someone who could hurt me in so many ways, it would definitely be her.
Now that Harper, my close friend, was with the only man I dared to love.
I wondered if she had told Adam about my feelings for him, and if that's the reason he stayed away for so long.
I wondered how they got to meet each other and how she managed to be in a relationship with one of the playboys of the city, and at the same time, the man of my dreams.
And I couldn’t forget the masked man, and I wondered who he could be?
So many questions left unanswered.
