I think to myself, he has finally accepted his fate. We walked together out of the restaurant. I was holding him close and leaning a bit while he held me close, with a smile on his face. I could tell he was happy, I could feel it from the way he was looking at me, but that was all there would be, me pitying him every step of the way.
He holds out the car door and just then, we see Archer, Christine's brother. He was in the company of two beautiful young ladies, who seemed to be laughing at his jokes. It had been ages since I saw Archer and didn't say anything to him. I just enter my car and Arnold closes the door for me.
"Hello queenie" I heard his voice call out. I was startled but quickly got myself back, "hello Archer" I said, with a flashing smile on my face," I see you are having a good time".
"It's nice to see you again Archer", I replied to him.
"Say hi to my sister for me would you!" wait, are the two of you still sleeping together, he asked? Looking deep into my eyes, you need yourself. He smiled and turned away.
"She has a real man," Arnold replies," putting himself in the picture, he leans in and moves closer so our lips will touch, "it has to be believable, I say to myself as I let my lips melt into his.
" Hmmm ", Archer said in a mocking tone. I hope so. I hope you know she uses people just like her father. You have to be wary of her. A snake never grows legs. With you two love birds, he concluded with a grin and went to join the ladies who were waiting for him in front of the restaurant.
I relaxed with embarrassment glaring on my face. I don't say a word as the driver pulls the car away from the restaurant parking area.
I could feel Arnold's eyes on me when he asked "who is that?
He is Christine's brother, I replied.
And then he relaxed, pulling the knot of his tie to relieve him from all the stress of today.
Do you want us to go home? he asked.
No, I would like us to have some fun time, you know, since the white wedding is coming up, let's go to the spa.
The car parks and we enter a bungalow which sits wide in an enormous compound with cars packed all over.
"Welcome to'sweet hands' miss Dale". The receptionist replies with a hearty smile.
No, my name is Mrs Shaw now, and this is my husband.
Arnold flashes a warming smile and the receptionist smiles back and welcomes him also. She hands him the menu and then escorts us to a room where we meet up with Christine.
I could see the beds all lined up with great spacing, the interior of the room was white with two other masseuses joining the one already working on Christine.
They asked us what we would like first and I told the chubby one who was doing the talking we would go for the pedicure first.
The latter collects our coats and the receptionist vanishes, we see a leather chair and our legs deep in what looks like a fish tank.
Ohh, it's really tickly. Arnold said, yes it is". I replied, you will soon get used to this."
He relaxes and then I tell him we will be going shopping. After this, do you have anything in mind?
"OH yes, Christine says excited I do."
Her eyes closed and a mask on her face, wrapped in a white towel, she was getting her fingers attended to.
We would have to go to three places, the first would be for the custom-made suits, while the second for his casual clothes and the third, oh, the third would be for the freaky part.
You know!
"I don't know, "I and Arnold replied to her all at once.
She giggles, enjoying the moment, we will be needing all that for the wedding.
The masseuses are now giving us hand massages and from the corner of my eye I could see preparations being made for a full body massage.
I can get used to this, I heard Arnold say, with a bright smile on his face.
Sure you can, it is a beautiful life you have now.
I think about all the changes we would have to make to fit the views a married couple. I think about where would be perfect for a vacation after this, but I don't really know where to go, since I have been to all countries. I have partied at all the beaches. It was becoming really wild now, since just thinking of where I had not been to was stressing me out more than my office job.
Christine would know, I told myself, Christine had. almost. All the places with me, the rest I went with my parents, who seemed to call those family vacations, but my father would work all ours and my mother was always at home drunk and drooling on the couch.
No matter the country I traveled to with them, it was always the same thing that always seemed to occur.
Thinking of vacation had taken me back to my childhood, a place I would really not like to visit, a place in my head that felt lonely until I met Christine and her parents.
They seemed to have got their lives together, they were as wealthy as my parents, but they had time for Archer and Christine and I wished my parents had time for me like they did. I wished my mom had not drunk herself to sleep and, like Mrs Monroe, held hands with me as she walked round.
But my mom only seemed to care about one and only one person herself. If she wasn't out shopping, she was on the couch asleep from too much alcohol.
The thought of it made me proud that I was the one setting the terms of my union with Arnold and I know there will be no kids to regret.
