The low hum of an engine reached Nayla’s ears just as she stepped out of the bathroom. Her wet hair draped over her shoulders, leaving damp trails upon the satin kimono wrapped around her body. Her bare feet padded across the wooden floor, drawn toward the source of the sound. Faintly, she could hear a car pulling over by the roadside out front. Silence claimed the house for a split second. Then, the muffled chime of the gate bell rang out. Nayla came to a halt in the middle of the living room.
