chapter 3

The next morning, grief sat heavy in my chest like a stone as I stood outside Voss Global’s massive headquarters. I walked into the sleek lobby, resume clutched tightly like a weapon. The receptionist smiled politely. “Good morning. How can I help you?” “I have an interview for the executive secretary position,” I said, keeping my voice calm. “With Alexander Voss.” She checked her screen. “Third floor. Good luck.” The elevator ride felt endless. I stared at my reflection, barely recognizing the woman looking back. The hopeful sister from Five days ago days ago was dead along with Marcus. This new version of me was colder. Hungrier for the truth. The interview room was intimidating. Alexander Voss sat at the head of the table, looking every bit the powerful billionaire. His eyes were sharp and cold as he looked up when I entered. “Sit,” he said, his voice low and commanding. I sat down, meeting his cold gaze without flinching. Alexander stared at me in silence for a long moment, his expression unreadable. “Why do you need this job?” he finally asked, his tone cold and cutting. I held his stare. “Because I want a role where I can prove myself. I’m good under pressure. I don’t break easily. And I’ll do whatever it takes to get things done right, no matter how tough the boss is.” Alexander continued staring at me with those icy eyes, not blinking. *Interesting. She doesn’t look away. Most people c***k by now. She’s either very good… or very dangerous.* He said nothing more for several long seconds, just kept that cold, intimidating silence that made the air feel thicker. “Why should I believe you can handle me?” he finally asked, his voice low and dangerous. “I don’t tolerate weakness. I don’t tolerate mistakes. I expect perfection. Can you give me that?” I leaned forward slightly, refusing to back down. “Yes. I can give you that. I’ve dealt with worse than a demanding boss who thinks everyone should fear him. I don’t run when things get hard. I fight.” Alexander’s eyes narrowed. *She’s not afraid. That’s rare. Dangerous. But intriguing.* He leaned back, still staring. “We’ll see. That’s all.” I stood up, my heart pounding but my face calm. I had stood my ground. The secretary waiting outside smiled politely. “Mr. Voss will send the decision by email tonight. Check your inbox later this evening.” I nodded and left the building, my mind racing. I had faced him. And I had not backed down. As I walked through the city streets, the noise of cars and people felt distant. All I could think about was Alexander’s cold stare and the way he had tested me. He was intimidating. Powerful. But I wasn’t scared. I was ready. Sophia called me as I walked. “How did it go?” she asked, worry clear in her voice. “The interview is done,” I replied quietly. “He said I’ll get the decision by email tonight. Soph, this is it. I’m going to find out what really happened that night. And if Alexander Voss had anything to do with Marcus’s death, I’m going to make him pay.” Sophia sighed. “Just be careful, Elena. This could be dangerous. Promise me you won’t do anything reckless right away.” “I can’t promise that,” I said honestly. “But I’ll be smart. For Marcus.” That night, I sat in Sophia’s apartment, staring at my laptop as I researched everything about Alexander Voss. Billionaire. Ruthless businessman. Heart condition survivor. The more I read, the more my rage grew. He had everything while my brother had nothing. My phone buzzed with a new email. I opened it with shaking hands. *Subject: Executive Secretary Position – Decision* *Dear Elena Ramirez,* *After careful consideration, we are pleased to offer you the position of Executive Secretary to Mr. Alexander Voss. Please report tomorrow at 8:00 AM sharp. Do not be late.* I stared at the screen, my heart pounding with a mix of triumph and dark purpose. I was in.
