Chapter 1
“Marcus, this is it — the heart you’ve been waiting for is finally here!” Elena said excitedly as she helped her brother adjust the hospital gown, her hands trembling with a mix of joy and nerves that made her voice c***k just a little.
Marcus smiled weakly from the bed, his face pale but his eyes bright with that stubborn hope she had come to love so much over the years. “Finally, sis. No more waiting around like a damn prisoner in my own body. We’re really doing this. You and me, new chapter after this.”
Elena swallowed the lump in her throat and squeezed his hand tightly, her chest tight with years of fear finally loosening its painful grip. She had fought so hard for this moment, calling doctors at all hours, begging on waiting lists, staying up nights praying to whoever was listening. “Yeah, new chapter. You’re gonna be running around causing trouble again, and I’ll be right there complaining about it like always. I can’t wait to see it.”
Marcus laughed softly, the sound weak but real. “Promise you won’t hover too much when I’m out of here? I know you, Elena. You’ll probably try to wrap me in bubble wrap and never let me out of your sight.”
“Damn right I will,” she replied with a grin, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. Inside, relief flooded her like warm sunshine after a long storm. After all the close calls and sleepless nights, this was their turning point. Her little brother was finally getting his second chance at life.
The nurse smiled as she checked the IV line, her movements efficient but kind. “We’re almost ready. The team is prepping the OR now. This is going to be a great day for him.”
Elena nodded, feeling lighter than she had in months. “You hear that, Marcus? Good things coming. Just stay strong for me, okay? We’ve waited too long for this.”
Marcus nodded, his voice soft but steady despite the exhaustion in his eyes. “For you? Always. Love you, sis. Thanks for never giving up on me.”
“Love you more, you stubborn pain in the ass,” Elena said, leaning down to kiss his forehead. The room felt warm and full of possibility, like the whole world was finally aligning after so long.
A sudden loud commotion erupted in the hallway — raised voices, rushing footsteps, machines wheeling past at high speed. Elena glanced toward the door, frowning as her stomach twisted with unease. “What the hell is going on out there? It sounds like total chaos.”
Marcus tried to sit up a little, wincing. “Probably just another emergency. Hospitals are always crazy like this. Don’t worry about it.”
Before Elena could respond, a nurse poked her head in, looking flustered and out of breath. “There’s been a big accident on the highway. Some prominent billionaire guy just got rushed in critical condition. The whole trauma team is mobilized right now.”
Elena’s stomach twisted tighter, but she pushed the feeling down hard. Nothing was going to ruin this day for them. “As long as it doesn’t affect Marcus, I don’t care who the rich asshole is. Today is about my brother.”
The nurse gave a quick nod and left. Elena turned back to Marcus, forcing a bright smile even as worry gnawed at the edges of her mind. “See? Just some rich guy’s problem. You’re the priority today, okay? Focus on that.”
Marcus chuckled weakly, his hand still in hers. “Yeah. Today’s my day. Finally. I can already imagine us going to the beach again like we used to.”
Elena laughed softly, the sound a little shaky with emotion. “Hell yes. First thing after you recover. I’ll even let you drive if you promise not to scare the s**t out of me.”
They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the monitor’s steady beeps filling the room like a heartbeat of hope. Elena felt tears prick her eyes but blinked them away. This was the moment they had fought for together. Everything was going to be okay.
The door opened again and the main surgeon entered, his expression professional but warm. “We’re ready for you, Marcus. The heart is here and everything looks perfect. This is going to change your life.”
Marcus grinned at Elena one last time. “See you on the other side, sis. Love you.”
“Love you more. Go get that new heart,” Elena whispered, watching them wheel him out. She stood in the empty room, heart pounding with anticipation and a deep, bone-weary relief.
She paced the waiting area for what felt like hours, sipping bad coffee and checking her phone every few minutes. The hope in her chest felt almost too big to contain. Marcus was finally getting his chance.
Then the commotion in the hallway grew louder. Doctors shouted orders. Machines beeped urgently. Elena’s stomach dropped as a nurse rushed past with a worried look.
“What’s happening?” Elena asked, grabbing the arm of a passing staff member. “Is it my brother? Is Marcus okay?”
The nurse hesitated, her face pale. “There was a complication in the OR. Dr. Leonardo is handling it.”
Elena’s blood ran cold. “What kind of complication? Tell me right now!”
Dr. Leonardo Hart finally emerged from the OR area, his face grim and tired. He walked straight toward her, his steps heavy.
“I’m sorry,” he said quietly, his voice careful. “The transplant failed. We did everything we could, but Marcus did not survive.”
