I rushed forward as Alexander collapsed, my heart slamming against my ribs. “Alexander!” I shouted, dropping to my knees beside him. “s**t, are you okay? Talk to me!”
He gasped, clutching his chest, his face pale and sweaty. “f**k… chest… tight…”
I grabbed the phone on his desk and dialed the emergency line with shaking hands. “This is Elena Ramirez, executive secretary to Alexander Voss. He’s having a heart episode in his office. Send help now!”
The operator’s voice was calm. “Help is on the way. Keep him comfortable and don’t move him.”
I knelt beside him, loosening his tie as best I could. “Hang in there. Help is coming. Just breathe through it.”
Alexander gritted his teeth, his eyes squeezing shut. “Don’t… need… pity.”
“Shut up and save your strength,” I snapped, my voice sharper than I intended. Inside, hatred and worry twisted together in a confusing knot. I was supposed to hate him. But seeing him like this felt wrong.
The door burst open a few minutes later. Paramedics rushed in, followed by Dr. Leonardo Hart himself. “Move aside,” Leonardo ordered, his voice sharp. “Let me see him.”
I stepped back, my hands still trembling. “He just collapsed. Said his chest was tight.”
Leonardo knelt beside Alexander, checking his pulse. “Alexander, can you hear me? How bad is the pain on a scale of one to ten?”
Alexander grunted, his face twisted. “Seven… maybe eight. Feels like the accident all over again.”
Leonardo nodded, his expression serious. “We need to get you stabilized. This could be stress-related. You know what I told you about pushing yourself.”
I stood there watching, my stomach churning. This was the same doctor who had let my brother die. The same man who had congratulated Alexander on his “miracle.” I wanted to scream at him, but I kept my mouth shut.
Leonardo glanced up at me. “Call his mother. Tell her what happened. And clear his schedule for the rest of the day.”
I nodded, my voice tight. “I’ll do it right now.”
As I stepped toward the desk, I heard Leonardo speaking quietly to Alexander. “You’re lucky this happened here. We can manage it. Just like last time.”
Alexander muttered something I couldn’t hear. Leonardo replied in a low voice. “The recovery was a miracle. Don’t push it again.”
I froze for a second, my blood running cold. Miracle recovery. The same words Leonardo had used the night Marcus died. I pretended to look for a number, but my ears were straining.
Leonardo stood up as the paramedics prepared to move Alexander. “Let’s get him to the private wing. I’ll monitor him personally.”
Alexander looked at me as they helped him up, his face still pale. “Don’t screw anything up while I’m gone. The company doesn’t stop for anyone.”
I nodded, hiding the hatred burning in my chest. “I won’t. Get better.”
As they wheeled him out, Leonardo paused beside me. His eyes met mine with a strange intensity. “Keep things running smoothly, Miss Ramirez. Alexander needs to focus on recovery.”
I forced a nod. “Of course.”
But as Leonardo walked away, I felt a chill run down my spine. The way he said “miracle recovery”… the private meeting… the suspicious exchange of looks between them. Something was very wrong here.
I sat down at Alexander’s desk, my hands shaking as I picked up the phone. The hatred inside me was stronger than ever. I was going to find out exactly what happened the night Marcus died. And I was going to start with Dr. Leonardo Hart.
