CHAPTER 10 — The Game Begins The warning from the night before did not leave Elara’s mind. It lingered. Not as fear… but as a reminder. She was no longer the only one playing this game. --- Morning sunlight filtered through the tall windows of her room as Elara stood quietly, her phone in hand. The picture. The message. You are not safe. Her gaze hardened slightly. “Then I’ll just have to become more dangerous.” --- By noon, Aurelia City was already buzzing. A major announcement had been released from Vaughn Enterprises. It was subtle. Carefully worded. But powerful enough to shake the right people. --- Inside the Cross family office, Adrian Cross stared at the document in his hand. His expression darkened. “This… doesn’t make sense.” Across from him, his father, Victor Cross, leaned back in his chair. “It makes perfect sense,” he said calmly. “Someone is moving against us.” Adrian clenched the paper slightly. Vaughn Enterprises had just withdrawn from a joint investment project… One that the Cross family had heavily relied on. And the decision? It came directly from Elara Vaughn. --- “She wouldn’t do this,” Adrian said. But even as he said it… He wasn’t sure anymore. --- Meanwhile, in another part of the city, Seraphina Vale was not smiling. For the first time in a long time… She looked unsettled. “Elara is making her move earlier than expected,” she said quietly. Her father, Gregory Vale, glanced at her. “And you didn’t see this coming?” Seraphina’s eyes darkened slightly. “I underestimated her.” Gregory’s voice was cold. “Then don’t make that mistake again.” --- Back at Vaughn Enterprises, Elara sat across from her father. Richard Vaughn looked at her with a mixture of surprise and curiosity. “You were the one who suggested pulling out of the Cross partnership.” “Yes.” “That deal would have brought long-term benefits.” Elara met his gaze calmly. “It would have given them leverage over us.” Richard was silent for a moment. Then… A slow smile appeared. “You’re thinking ahead.” “I have to.” He nodded. And for the first time, he didn’t question her decision. --- What Richard didn’t know… Was that in her past life, that same partnership had been the beginning of the end. It was how Adrian gained influence. How Seraphina gained access. How everything started to fall apart. --- This time… Elara cut it off before it could begin. --- That evening, Aurelia City’s elite gathered once again. A private event. Exclusive. Powerful. And filled with people hiding behind perfect smiles. --- Elara stepped into the grand hall with quiet confidence. Tonight, she wasn’t here to observe. She was here to be seen. --- “Miss Vaughn.” She turned. Vivian Moore stood before her. Elegant. Poised. Perfect. Dressed in soft silver, she looked like she belonged exactly where she was. “Elara Vaughn,” Vivian said with a polite smile. “I’ve heard a lot about you.” Elara returned the smile just as gracefully. “I hope it was all good.” Vivian’s eyes held a quiet sharpness. “Of course.” But neither of them believed that. --- For a moment, they simply looked at each other. Two women. Both powerful. Both composed. Both fully aware that this meeting was not accidental. --- “I heard about the Cross deal,” Vivian said casually. “News travels fast.” “In our world, it always does.” Elara tilted her head slightly. “And what do you think about it?” Vivian smiled faintly. “I think… it was bold.” A pause. “Bold decisions usually come with consequences.” Elara’s expression didn’t change. “I’m prepared for that.” --- Across the room, Sebastian Hale watched them. His gaze moved between Elara and Vivian. Something about the interaction… felt important. --- “You’re watching her again.” Sebastian didn’t turn. “I observe people who are interesting.” His father, Alexander Hale, stood beside him. “And which one is interesting?” Sebastian’s answer came without hesitation. “Elara Vaughn.” --- Back near the center of the hall, the conversation between the two women continued. “You’ve changed,” Vivian said suddenly. Elara’s eyes flickered slightly. “People grow.” “Yes,” Vivian replied softly. “But not usually this quickly.” For a split second… There was something behind her words. Suspicion. --- Elara stepped slightly closer. Her voice dropped just enough to remain private. “Then maybe I’m not like most people.” Vivian held her gaze. And for the first time… She smiled for real. “Maybe you’re not.” --- But deep inside— Vivian understood something important. Elara Vaughn was not someone to ignore. --- As the night went on, alliances shifted subtly. Eyes followed Elara wherever she went. Whispers spread. Questions grew. --- And somewhere in the shadows… Someone else was watching. --- Elara felt it this time. That same presence from before. Quiet. Hidden. Observing. --- Her phone vibrated. She didn’t take it out immediately. Instead, she walked calmly toward the balcony. Away from the crowd. Away from the noise. --- Only then did she look at the screen. A new message. From the same unknown number. --- You’re moving too fast. A pause. Then another message. --- They’re already starting to notice. --- Elara’s grip on the phone tightened slightly. Finally… She replied. --- Then let them. --- She hit send. And for the first time— A reply came instantly. --- You haven’t figured it out yet… have you? --- Elara’s eyes narrowed. --- You weren’t the only one who died that night. --- Silence. The world around her seemed to fade. Her heartbeat slowed. Her mind sharpened. --- Another message appeared. --- Be careful, Elara. This game is bigger than you remember. --- Elara slowly lowered the phone. Her reflection stared back at her through the glass door. But this time… Even she could feel it. --- Something had changed. --- This was no longer just revenge. --- This was war. --- And she was no longer the only one who came back to fight it. ---
