CHAPTER 9: THE WARNING

Chapter 9: The Warning The message remained on Elara Vaughn’s phone for several minutes. You should be careful. Not everyone around you is your friend. A normal person would have felt fear. Confusion. Panic. But Elara only stared at the words with a calm expression. Because she had already learned the cruelest truth in the world. The people closest to you could be the ones holding the knife. She looked at the unknown number. Who sent it? Was it a warning? Or a threat? Either way, someone knew. Someone had noticed that Elara Vaughn was no longer the same woman who had died three years later. Her fingers moved across the screen. She typed a reply. Who are you? The message was sent. But there was no response. Elara placed the phone down. Interesting. Whoever it was wanted her attention. And they had succeeded. --- The next morning, Elara arrived at Vaughn Enterprises. The familiar building stood tall in front of her. In her past life, this place had once represented everything she loved. Her family. Her future. Her purpose. But after her death, she learned something important. Power was never given. It had to be protected. As she walked through the halls, employees greeted her respectfully. “Good morning, Miss Vaughn.” “Good morning.” Her voice was calm. Confident. Different. People noticed changes. They always did. --- Inside her father’s office, Richard Vaughn looked up as she entered. “Elara.” “Father.” He smiled slightly. “You have been spending a lot of time working lately.” “I need to understand the company better.” Richard studied her. Three years ago, Elara had been interested in many things, but business had never been her priority. Now she sat before him discussing strategies and investments like someone who had years of experience. “You have changed.” The words made her pause. For a second, memories of her past life flashed through her mind. The betrayal. The pain. The night she died. “I had to.” Richard’s expression softened. Whatever had caused this change, he could see that his daughter was stronger. “I’m proud of you.” Those words touched a part of Elara she thought she had buried. In her previous life, she spent so much time searching for love from people who betrayed her. She forgot the people who always loved her. --- Across the city, Seraphina Vale sat in her office. The elegant smile she showed the world was gone. Only calculation remained. “Elara is becoming difficult.” Adrian Cross looked at her. “You said you knew her.” “I did.” Seraphina’s fingers tightened around her cup. “The old Elara was predictable.” “And now?” A cold smile appeared on her face. “Now she is dangerous.” Adrian frowned. Dangerous? That word did not fit the woman he knew. Elara had always been gentle. Forgiving. Easy to manipulate. But lately… Every conversation with her left him unsettled. “She looks at me differently,” Adrian admitted. Seraphina looked at him. “Because she knows something.” Silence filled the room. Neither of them said the thought they were both thinking. What if Elara remembered? --- That afternoon, Elara received another message. This time, there was a picture attached. Her eyes narrowed. It was a photograph of her. Taken yesterday. Someone had been watching her. Below the picture were four words: You are not safe. Elara’s expression remained calm. But inside, her mind was already working. Who had access to her movements? Who knew enough to warn her? And most importantly… Who wanted to protect her? --- Later that evening, Elara attended a business event. Aurelia City’s elite gathered in the luxurious hall. Everyone smiled. Everyone pretended. She knew better now. A familiar voice interrupted her thoughts. “Miss Vaughn.” She turned. Sebastian Hale stood behind her. Perfectly dressed. Calm. Unapproachable. “Mr. Hale.” His eyes studied her. “You seem distracted.” Elara smiled faintly. “Do I?” “Yes.” She was surprised. Most people never noticed small changes in her. Sebastian did. “You should be careful.” The words caught her attention. Again. That warning. “What makes you say that?” Sebastian looked around the room. “Because in places like this, people rarely smile without a reason.” For a moment, Elara simply looked at him. It was strange. The same advice. From two different sources. One was a warning. The other felt like concern. “Thank you,” she said quietly. Sebastian nodded. “Just don’t underestimate people.” A small smile appeared on her lips. “I learned that lesson already.” Sebastian noticed the sadness hidden behind those words. But he did not ask. Not yet. --- That night, Elara returned home. She looked at the list of names hidden in her private file. Adrian Cross. Seraphina Vale. Everyone connected to the night she died. Then her eyes moved to the unknown message. Someone else was involved. Someone she had not discovered before. Her second chance had already changed things. The future was no longer exactly the same. And that meant one thing. She could no longer rely only on her memories. She would have to uncover the truth all over again. Elara closed the file. A cold determination filled her eyes. “Let the game begin.” Because this time… She was not waiting for them to destroy her. She was coming for them first.
